I was going to bake brownies and mail to soldiers in Iraq but someone mentioned that they would be bad by the time they arrived there - what are some of the things you are mailing there?

It's a nice idea to do something like that. My DS's teacher is in Iraq. Things on his wish list were candy bars, playing cards (still), paper and envelopes, snacks. I saw someone on the news sending a desk top Christmas tree. We did send a Christmas card too. But you have to mail ASAP for things to get there in time.

Happy Holidays.

I sent my brother a 12 inch Xmas tree, holiday Oreos, holiday M&Ms, a DVD, a magazine, etc.
But the deadline to ship was Nov 15 for them to get it by Xmas.

Go ahead and bake brownies, they will arrive in fine shape. I know this because homemade brownies are something my dd Ashli makes and sends to her bf Titus all the time. Make sure they are completely cool before you wrap them up and also it's a good idea to cut them into squares and wrap the squares individually in plastic wrap.

i always send packaged items that won't melt. Things like beef jerky, tuna salad packs, red hots, slim jims, gum, sunflower seeds, corn nuts and some little fun things like playing cards and wooden airplanes (for some reason these seem well liked) and disposable cameras. My son asked us not to send too many baked goods because they draw bugs.

Toilet paper is a precious commodity according to my recently returned Marine! :)

Do you have a specfic solider to mail to?

The Dept of Defense will no longer deliver to "any soldier" just keep that in mind. Donations to the USO are welcome or you can donate to people doing things for the family members left behind.

I haven't mailed to anyone in Iraq as of yet, but I have mailed to Macedonia. Although we have a lot of troops in Iraq, we still have troops who are TDY (on temporary duty for 6 months) in Macedonia, Afganastan and many other overseas locations. I would say send the brownies, even though the mailing deadlines have passed there is still a chance mail will arrive in time and if it doesn't it will be nice to have for New Year's. I think the military is doing an excellent job this holiday season in moving the mail, I had a huge package my MIL sent (cost her $30) and it made it from NY to Italy in 5 days! As for the condition of the brownies, if you wrap them as air tight as possible they will be fine. When my DH was in the Persian Gulf I sent him cookies and they arrived just fine.

My DDs school made Christmas cards to send to our people in Iraq. I think it's about over 200 cards.

Ds did something with his school class. He brought home a very specific list from his teacher and she said she was mailing it. We contributed hard candy, a giant bag and lifesavers and gatorade. That were 2 of the requested items.
