I just have to chime in here and say YES, ABD REALLY IS THAT GOOD.
We had a really unfortunate experience on our first ABD trip to China. We were quarantined because of the H1N1 scare. We were healthy, but had to go to quarantine anyway. The rest of our tour left us and we were stuck in quarantine for a week. It was awful, terrifying and hot.
ABD was in constant contact with us. We got daily calls from ABD in the USA and our adventure guides. They were not at all responsible for our awful experience, but they did everything possible to help us. They got us additional fans, additional padding for the rock hard beds, and tried to help us get food our oldest daughter would eat. Once we were released from quarantine, they picked us up, took us to a five star hotel, had dinner waiting for us, and took us to a Kung Fu show, all at their expense. They also provided us with a wonderful guide in Beijing, and help us change our flights so we could go back home. They didn't have to do anything to help us, but they bent over backwards to help. They didn't cause the problem, but worked dillligently to fix it.
Once we got home, we got two phone calls and several emails from ABD to make sure we were okay.
So, if they don't give me little trinkets or a bunch of free stuff, I don't mind at all. I know that if the chips are down, they are in my corner and will try to make things better. I'm not going to put them down because of a lack of pins or a lack of "magic". They provide a service that I want to buy. They provide a trip where family comes first, safety is paramount and where the adventurer is truly important to the company. I have first hand knowledge of the high quality people they employ, and I know they will work to make things right.
Now, I will get off my soapbox, and plan my next ABD, just trying to choose between Germany, Ireland, and the Alps...
