Is a Honey Baked Ham worth the money?

I've got a SIL who loves them and makes them for holidays. I don't think they are any better than your average grocery store spiral sliced ham, and definitely not worth the premium you pay.

We love them and will pick one up later this week.

Ours carry the smaller boneless hams.

I think most hams are too salty but not these. There is hardly any other ham that I will eat.

We have a Honeybaked Ham store in our town. Every holiday there is a line of people waiting outside the door to pick up their hams. If it wasn't worth it the place would have closed down years ago. The rest of the time the place is deserted so people obviously consider it a holiday treat worth splurging on. They are good but we aren't big ham eaters so the only time we've had them is at parties but every time we've had it the taste was delicious.

There are copycat recipes out there but that's all they are, copycats. Kind of like Kentucky Fried Chicken where you can make stuff that's similar but you just can't make it to be like the original.

We will never buy a honey baked ham again. It was extremely fatty, I ended up throwing most of it away. It was thawed when it arrived - I mail ordered it. The company refused to replace it, they told me just to refreeze it but use it within a month. Definitely not worth the price.

I have heard that they are not as good when ordering them online. I have read people say they are soggy, etc. I am only advocating buying them in the store.

A few years back HBH had a really good deal around Mother's Day. I ordered it and it was not the same as the ones I was buying or have since bought in the stores.

In the store you are shown your ham. Some will have fat. I just pass on those.

The store bought ones are firmer and the glaze is still in tact.

I couldn't agree more...if you are going to buy one, buy it in store! We love them, like others it is a splurge that we only get a couple times a year :thumbsup2

Our family loves Honey Baked Ham! I would honestly though not buy them if it werent for the gift certificates my husbands employer gives out at Christmas. He gets a $35 GC which almost pays for an 8 lb ham.

For my money, no. I genuinely prefer a Costco ham, and the fact that its much less $$ is just gravy!

I have had honey baked hams and they are yummy but I always buy the glazed spiral ham from Walmart ... super yummy and a lot cheaper! It is in a purple wrapper.

I never had a Honeybaked, but I just saw a show on the Food Network of some ham company, wasn't Honeybaked, that showed how they glaze their hams. I thought it was interesting. They poured honey on the outside of the ham then sprinkled sugar on it while they held a torch to it to create a crispy coating. Immediately after they sprinkled it lightly with a cinnamon clove mixture. I may try this sometime. It looked great.

Personally I prefer the Trader Joe's honey ham. Delicious! But my parents insist on the Honey Baked Ham and well, they are buying it so that's what we'll get yet again. One tip, order ahead and when you get there, get the butt. It has more meat and less bone.

Honeybaked is foolproof and good imho. I buy two every holiday season.

I love them. Yes I can find them cheaper and bake myself. But i just don't want to . They are YUMMY , and I very rarely heat up . We serve with rolls, potato salad , deviled eggs and a few other sides.

Most of the grocery stores and big box stores in our area have spiral sliced hams- Publix, Aldi, Costco, Sams, etc. None are as good as honey-baked ham. We don't like the sauce mix either that come with those hams. So, I do think it's worth the extra money to have something everyone will truly enjoy.---Kathy

I like Honey Baked Ham but not enough to justify the cost. I used to work there over the holidays in high school and college and used to get a great discount but now even with the coupon they offer it is just to expensive for me.

Just got our first one last night for an early Christmas dinner...

It will now become a tradition. It is honestly the BEST ham I have ever had and well worth the cost. We have a ton of leftovers and today I made little ham biscuit sandwiches with swiss cheese. YUMMY!

Now, it is not something I would buy year round due to the cost, but for a special occasion it is so worth it.

Yuck !!! I do not like Honey Baked Hams. If I'm going to pay a lot of money for a ham I want a quality ham...Smithfield, that type. I can buy a spiral sliced ham at lots of places for way cheaper than HBH, and make my own glaze. It takes about two seconds. If you want ham w/ ham flavor get a real Smithfield ham, not a sugary mess. Their sides are gross too, and way overpriced.

Where do you buy these? I've had Costco's spiral hams....pretty yummy, but a little too big for our family of 4. Can the "true honey ham" be bought in Canada? if so....where?

I guess its all a matter of taste.....pun intended.;)

Honey Baked Hams are awesome. We had them in past years and always been consist, great taste, good size, excellent sprial cuts, plenty of leftovers.

More recently we have recieved them as gifts....shipped to us. Again, always perfect, great consistancy, etc.

One point made it to never, ever heat the Honey Baked Ham. It is precooked and meant to be served at room temp. Simply pull slices off bone and plate, it will get to room temp in not time and ready to serve.

While it is no where in our budget this year, its good to remember all the great hams we've had.

Spoken like a true Southern.
