I am wondering if DVC offers similar promotions to that of marriott, hilton, etc.--a deeply discounted rate to stay 3 or 4 nights with a caveat that MUST attend a timeshare presentation during your stay.

Usually they don't have an offer like that BUT recently there was a limited time one if you had a referral form a current member. I don't recall all the details off the top of my head and don't know if it is still in effect. Hard to say if/when they'll try it again...

here is what was offered to those referred by DVC members.

$199 per night (plus tax)—
for stays most nights 8/30 - 10/1/09
in a One-Bedroom Vacation Home at SSR or OKW.

Nope - DVC doesn't play those games. They don't have to - it sells itself so the free or reduced price stays aren't needed.

Don't kid yourself! They might not offer a discounted price all the time, but they have their ways of doing it! My friend got a great rate last spring break for a 2 bedroom at SSR for less than I could get it for her on points with maid service everyday!

I just sat next to a lady on the bus two nights ago that paid for two rooms at a value resort for her family of eight and they called her at home to tell her she was getting a "free" upgrade to two one bedrooms at SSR. She paid about $1500 per room with free dining and everything! Meanwhile, I had just spent 8 nights at SSR (my home resort) in a studio, because we don't have enough points for a week in a one bedroom! Plus all the money that was spent on food! I have to say...not feeling the magic like I was!

1) The upgrade was from a Value, due to overselling the Value with free dining.
2) Other specials are due to low bookings, for particular weeks.
3) DVC does not do the nights-free or nights-reduced of other timeshares.

Those were rooms controlled by CRO and there was no requirement that a sales tour be taken - which is the question posed by the OP.

Since Disney (and not DVC) controlled how those rooms would be used, Disney (not DVC) offered them as an upgrade for value rooms which they could then rent out again. This was not a sales promotion offered by DVC and it was not offered to anyone calling about taking a DVC tour - it was an opportunity for Disney to rent out rooms (villas) that would otherwise go vacant where they can rent the value rooms again.

It was a win-win for those guests getting the upgrade and for Disney who gets to rent the value rooms to someone else, but it was not a sales incentive offered by DVC.

That is quite an upgrade...don't you think?!
I realize why they did it, because they sold out the values, but are you telling me they couldn't book them at a moderate or a studio? That is absurd! I am here right now and everything is not booked solid!

I think these current incentives for cash customers (free DDP, free admittance on birthday, etc.) are a result of lagging attendance figures. Less people are visiting so they have to do something to generate cash flow. It might seem a disadvantage to a DVC member now but think about a few years ago (or a few years from now) when the parks were breaking attendance records and there were little or no incentives at all. It all evens out over the long run. Of course, one can always bank their points to next year and pay cash for their current year trip!

And I may just do that next year! But with my luck, I would book a value and actually have to stay there! LOL!

It is just a little disturbing, because it costs us so much and we spend so much while we are here. We don't even have enough points to stay in a one-bedroom and yet they give it to someone paying for a value!? They have offered free dining ever since we bought into DVC four years ago! I don't even care about the dining, but I don't think the upgrade from a value to a one-bedroom is quite right. JMO! We love Disney just as much as the next, but some of the things they do are a little frustrating!

PinkTink I hear you, I don't have much room to talk yet because I am brand new to the DVC. I just dropped a bunch of $$ to buy points at SSR so my family could stay in a 2 bedroom for a week every year. I was a little taken back to find out that DVC do not get the meal deal for free like those that book through Disney. For all the money we spend on buying into plus fees I think it would be a huge benefit to at least offer a discount to DVC members for meal plans. I know we will enjoy it but sometimes it's nice to get some extra perks if you know what I mean.

Well members are a captive audience so to speak so they don't have to offer us anything. And there is, what can be seen as a discount available to DVC members : to purchase dining plan we do not need to purchase park ticket in order to do so, those who pay cash or stay at other WDW resorts do need to purchase ticket in order to have dining plan.

:)

or to be able to use points to buy a dining plan... I would like that option, not sure others would agree but that would be nice, less to save for.

They can't do it. It would violate the contract.
