We'll be at HH first week in Aug. in a 2 bedroom with cousins, but due to 2 bedroom point requirments, only have enough pts. for 5 nights. Just curious - will we have enough time to relex & enjoy everything. We've never been to HH - only WDW - our kids our 8 & 11. We are considering staying the Sat. night in a studio by ourselves. Comments!

Has anyone driven from Pgh - curious how long a drive?

I've never stayed at the DVC resort there (last time we stayed at the Westin which was A+!), but I've been to HH several times...and the whole place is very laid back. I think 5 nights would give you plenty of time to relax.

To me, the island is the kind of place where there's lots to do if you really want to find ways to stay busy...but other than golf and the beach, you kind of have to go looking for activities. There are also a lot of great places to visit within a short drive (Hunting Island State Park/lighthouse and Beaufort, SC are two places we visited last trip).

We love HHI resort and added-on extra points there in 2002 after many trips (4 at the holidays and 1 in April). We finally did a summer vacation last july11 for 4 nights. It was very hot! We spent most of the time in the ocean and the beach house(the pool at the resort gets too warm by noon). Lots of things to do for adults and kids. Great shopping, restaurants, golf and mini-golf and alot of "camp" stuff at the resort. I beleive you will have time to experience it all. Have fun! Be prepared for the heat!

We will be going to HH in March for the third year in a row. We have gone the past 2 Aprils. All of these visits are 5 night visits, since we drive and only have the week off. We hate when we have to leave, but it is definitely enough time. It is so relaxing there, each year we plan to go to Savannah, but we have yet to make it there! We do get there early on our check in day, so we do have that full day there too. The first year the room was not ready until 4:00, last year it was ready when we had checked in at 8:30 am. We can't wait for March.

Depending on what time you'd arrive you may find that you waste a fair amount of time checking out and in again on the Sunday as you have to check out by 11 and can't check in again until 3. I can see advantages and disadvantages to the idea it does depend on how organised you are.

I think you will get a decent feel for HH in 6 days and if you want to go looking for activities you'll have no trouble finding them, but with kids of 8 and 11 I think they'll have a great time around the pool and beach.

We've driven from Pitts and it took about 12 hours. In your position I'd leave Saturday morning (not too early) and drive until about 6-7 in the evening. Find a motel just off the Interstate, have something to eat and a fairly early night. Get up reasonably early and complete the drive (probably a couple of hours) and arrive at HH just before lunch. Let the kids have a couple of hours in the the pool then have lunch just before you check in (forces the kids to have a little break after lunch). If your leaving HH on the Friday afternoon/evening I'd drive until maybe 8 and stop again at an interstate motel , finishing the journey Saturday, leaving you Sunday to recover. IMHO driving in one shot REALLY takes it out of the driver and by keeping to "drive 4/5 hours, break for a meal, drive 4 hours break for the night drive 3/4 hours" it means the driver arrives at both ends of the journey in a suitable condition to enjoy themselves or go back to work. I wouldn't bother booking a hotel because although it may save you $20-30 it ties you to a "target" stop. By just winging it , it allows you to decide when you need to stop and it gives you the flexibility to deal with any emergencies that may arise.

IMO 5 nights is plenty at DVC HH but then I'm not a great fan of the resort. Why go to HH and not stay on the Beach or at least within easy walking distance. I'd go crazy at the resort for 7 nights. Your mileage may vary.

Just to give a little balance, we went last year for 4 nights and wish we'd stayed longer. When we returned I posted about people staying longer, and lots of people stay 10 days or more and enjoy it. I suppose I can see, though, that why you go really factors into your preference for # of nights. We loved the nature-birds, marsh, bike riding, dolphins. The fact that the ocean was a mile or so away didn't bother us in the least. Seems to me 5 nites might be a very good length of time.

Hi,

We're trying out Hilton Head in July in a studio. We're doing 5 nights on rented points. We decided to add another day so I called Member Services and got a Member discount for our arrival day (Saturday). It was a lot cheaper point wise to get a member discount on the cash night (Saturday night points are very high!). Member Services tied the two reservations together so we shouldn't have to move. I figure 6 nights will give us a good feel for the place.

I can't wait to try Hilton Head. My brother and his family loved Disney's Hilton Head resort. They also liked Marriott's Grande Ocean resort (they stayed there too), but they preferred Disney's Hilton Head resort over the Grande Ocean because of all the stuff for their kids to do. I asked my brother if he missed the ocean view from his room at Disney and he said no. They felt like it was two vacations in one with the Beach House and then back at the resort with all the oaks trees, bike paths, etc. As a matter a fact, when they moved to Marriott's Grande Ocean after Disney their little boy (my nephew) begged to go back to Disney's Hilton Head - the lifeguards and cast members made a big impression on him!

I can't wait to try Hilton Head out. I'd like to look over some of the other properties on the beach, too. I told my mom I would try to take some pictures of Marriott's Grande Ocean for her. My parents are strictly sit on the balcony and look at the ocean people, so they are hoping to stay at Marriott's Grande Ocean in the future.

My husband and I stayed in a studio for 5 nights in July last year. It was a very relaxing vacation. We loved the Beach House and Shelter Cove. The resort was very peaceful but I did see the activities board was loaded with things to do.
We liked it so much we are staying for 7 nights this June.
I hope you have a great trip!

My kids are 5, 3 and 1 and we love it! We stayed for a week in July and loved it so much we tried to move down there. DH got cold feet, but ya never know!
:)

Just curious what your cash price is - we'll be in a 2 bedroom (just didn't have an extra 72 pts). I'm sure it would much more expensive than a studio.

Thanks for all the great responses!@@

I don't mind telling you the member discount cash price. For the studio it's $206.25 (does not include tax). I think it's about a 25% discount.:sunny:
