We are going back to WDW in February and I am wanting to give my son some stuff for disney as a Chanukah present. So I was thinking about giving him a starter lanyard to do pin trading in WDW. My husband thinks he is to young for this. He will be 4 1/2 when we go! When did yall start pin trading with your kids?

no its not too young. my daughter when she was 4 loved it and traded with every CM should could find.

my son OTOH was the opposite. we bought hin a starter set and thought he would just loved it. he traded once and then just lost interest. we could have saved our money. oh he was 4 as well.

I would say no not at all.

Our son was 3.5 during our trip this summer and he LOVED it. It was so cool to see him figuring out what he liked best, and we did just chuckle at the reactions of some of the cast members at the pins he wanted as they offered something nicer than his first choice.

Of course it depends on your kiddo, but no it's not too young.

Both my 3 and 4 yearolds participated in trading this year. They watched their older brother do it last year and really were excited about it this year. My 4 really got some great pins. He is not the most social little guy, but the CM make it very easy and are so sweet with the kids.

My almost 3 yr old (at the time) traded this past year. He has an older brother and is very mature for his age. He loved it.

I bought a lanyard and some pins for my 5yo DD when we go, too. This will be her first time at DW. I have learned from this site that there are special CM's with GREEN lanyards that will trade with children, only. So, I think trading for a 4yo will be just fine.

Yes, look for the CMs with Green lanyards! Just a tip: they not only only trade with kids, but they often have "better" pins on them too! It's win-win. The CMs are always gracious about letting everyone see their pins, just ask! :thumbsup2

It's a great way for a child to practice socializing in a safe environment. I would stick to just talking to CMs for kids under 7 though, just in case, since CMs will always have to trade their pins (but other guests may not be so obliging). Enjoy!

Not too young!
Mine were 3 and 4 when we started. now my son is 4.5, and loves it! He doesn't keep ANYTHING though. His absolute favorite will stay that way for about an hour! So we try to take off the ones he really likes at night, or they'll be gone.

DD's started trading pins when they were 4 and 6. The youngest can't stop trading when we get to the parks she loves it so much. She will literally trade every single pin on her lanyard 2 to 3 times over the day.

My oldest is more particular and will only trade 1 or 2 pins over the day, some days none. And she does have a few that we purchased that she says she will never trade. We stick to the green lanyard CM mostly. Some of them will even tell the kids a little bit about the pins. Happy pin trading.

My friend just got back and said her 5-yr-old dd had a fantastic time doing pin trading. I say, if she wants to do it, go for it!:thumbsup2

...But if your kids weren't asking to do it would you expose them to it or wait until they showed a desire?

Mine started because I had read about pin trading, and wanted to try it. So i got my lanyard and pins, and tried when we went to the parks, and they wanted to do it too.
So, if I had never wanted to, they would probably be blissfully unaware!

I would wait . . . until they showed a desire or at least were old enough to appreciate it. We got a lanyard and pins for dd who was then ten on our last AP year and she loved it. Her younger brothers liked the pins, but we had no intention of getting them involved until they were older, but wouldn't you know we won YOMD lanyards and of course they HAD to pin trade then. Older ds was 6 & 7 at the time, and the interaction with the CM's was actually good for him. Younger ds was 3 & 4 and while he liked the trade aspect, it was really only because his siblings were doing it.

So if given a choice, I'd wait until A) they asked for it or B) they were old enough to really "get" it. Unless of course you win a lanyard w/pins . . . .

It is not too young at all. We went in August and my DD (3) had an absolute blast trading pins. She also go a lot of little extra while trading- here are a couple.

In mexico, I stopped a cast member to trade with her. The girl was so sweet and patient while my daughter looked at the pins. She ended up making my daughter her VIP guest for the day. She gave her a certificate and brought us to the front of the line on the Mexico ride and we got a private boat. (there was actually a line due to tropical storm fay)

about 50% of the time she also got from cast members, stickers, temporary tattoos, lollipops, and even free pins (the just gave her pins with out her trading)

There were so many magical moment for her and she called each of them her friends. It was so sweet and a way to kill some time. I really recommend doing it.
