Is $37 a lot to pay for a haircut?

This is an interesting thread, and I think the price has a LOT to do with where you live, and how "picky" you are.

Before we moved to Hawaii, I lived in Chicago, had the same hairdresser for more than 20 years. Never had a bad haircut or bad hair day in all that time. I wish I could say the same for here. (The average salon price here is $35 for a cut.)

I was in Chicago in July, had my "old" hairdresser cut my hair. The cost, before the tip was close to $70. And worth every penny. I've been back home for 4 months, and my cut is still in good shape. I dread having to go in and have the ends snipped off. If I could afford the trip, I'd be flying back every 4-5 months just to have Bob cut my hair.

The salon where my twin sister works charges $25 for a cut and blow dry. I don't pay anything, my sis comes to my house and cuts my hair.
The salon where my DD likes to go for her cuts (right by our house) only charges $20 for a cut and blowdry. She's friends with the girl that cuts it and likes the way she does it.
We have big name salons around here that charge a lot, I've never been to them, but I have friends that go there and a sister in law.
$37 is sounding kinda average.
I would never pay $50 for a haircut, but that's just me.

Wow what an eye opener. I just recently switch to a different salon. So I went from $17 to $29 and I thought that was bad.
Good thread!

That's average around here. I had my annual haircut at the spa type place last week. So relaxing...on the 2nd floor, french doors overlooking a lake. SPOILED! When I go there it's $55! But to be spoiled once a year is worth it to me. But $35 is the average around here.

I believe it does have to do with where you live. Right now I pay $50 which includes tip. I only get my haircut every few months so I don't complain. I recently moved to a less expensive area. Prior to, I've paid $70 for a haircut.

Would I do either of these prices if I cut it 1 x a month? Probably not, but 4-5 times a year isn't bad.

I now currently pay $60 plus tip, so $75 after all tips. When I used to live in Manhattan, it used to be $125 + tip!!! Now, that ended up being $150 everytime I got my hair cut!!!! So, I've lessened my costs by 1/2 since moving to NJ, but I don't get as good as a haircut. I'm not commuting into NYC to get a haircutt hough, it ends up being a whole day affair!!

I pay $16 plus tip. She washes my hair too so I don't have to tip a shampoo girl. I would pay anything for a good haircut. I get mine cut in the Pocono's plus there is a beauty salon every 5 feet so the prices aren't too bad. There are plenty of swanky places around there but this girl does a just as good, she just doesn't work in a fancy place.

I pay $40 before tip and its well worth it!

I pay $65 plus tip. I used to pay more when I got my hair cut in Boston - strangely, I pay less in San Francisco. I go every 8-10 weeks or so, and usually get a bang trim (free) about 6 weeks after the initial cut.

To me it is worth it. I have to get up pretty early in the morning, and having a good quality haircut means that I don't have to mess with it much. I just sort of dry it and it falls into place. I haven't used a curling iron in years. I don't have very many bad hair days, either. I also get lots of compliments on my hair, so it must look pretty good. People often ask me on the street who cuts my hair.

I guess everyone has their own priorities of what want to spend their money on. I would never spend 4 or five dollars or however much on cigarettes to pollute my lungs, for example.

I pay 23 including tip and that includes shampooing and styling. Looks like I'm getting by cheap! When I get my hair highlighted it's 38 and a perm is 55. Eyebrows waxed is 6. Think I better count my lucky stars!::yes::

I think it depends where you go in NJ as opposed to having so many great ones in NYC. I forget which town in Bergen County it's in, but Scissor Wizard is GREAT! I'm long gone from NJ, so I don't know if they still exist. Hope you find a place you're happy with.

I pay 80.00 w/tip for color, cut and blow dry. I have to go every 6 weeks. Now that I have a teenager who is driving I'll probably have to go every 4 weeks to cover all the grey hair that keeps popping out:eek:

Wow, I guess I really get a bargain. But, I have gone to the same beautician for years, with a tip I pay thirteen, eleven without a tip. She cuts, blow dries and styles.

Free for me.
I bought one of those flowbies that attach to the vacuum cleaner and I cut my hair myself

I'm kidding! I actually pay 14 plus tip 5.00.
Although I have run into a bit of a dilema. I have been using the same person the past couple of years. Shes done a great job on it. Well last month I needed it cut right before I went on vacation.
Well the girl that usually does it wasnt working the only day I could have it done so I had another girl do it and she did a fantastic job on it, better than the other girl. She charged me the same price as the girl. I actually want to start using her now on a regular basis, prob is I have to do it when the first girl isnt working. You know what they say..heck hath no fury like a woman scorned(especially those holding scissors)

Wow. These prices are all over the place! I forgot to add that my salon gives "scalp massages" prior to the haircut, so that's a little extra perk. I only tip $5 though. I also get my hair cut every 5 weeks. My hair grows very fast and my hair style is very "precise." It starts to look scruffy after just a few weeks.

The worst haircut I ever had was when my regular stylist was on vacation. I decided I HAD to have my hair done and couldn't wait until she returned. Well, that girl butchered my poor hair. Besides being totally incompetent, she was too busy blabbing about her ex-husband. Then her friend stopped in to take her to lunch and was rushing her. She just picked up my hair and hacked it off any which way.

It was an absolute nightmare. 2 weeks later I slunk back to my regular stylist and begged her to fix it. It took weeks before it was back to normal.

Never again.

Funny you should ask ... :teeth:

I just made an appt with a new salon ... they charge $100 for a new hair care system call OUIDAD. I am SUPER frugal person and would NEVER pay that myself ... well, a relative who has hair like mine (naturally curly and coarse and UGH!) ... anyway, she had her haircut there about a month ago and it does look AWESOME. So, my grandmother (knowing how frugal I am) said she would give me that as a Christmas gift if I wanted it to be part of my Christmas! So, I will see Thursday if it is worth it! I keep thinking of how many mickey bars that would buy me next week!!! LOL!

I've had my hair butchered for too many years. The woman that does it now does a pretty good job. I pay $35 including tip, for wash, condition, cut and dry. I have to drive 30 minutes to get there though.

$95 plus tip for a cut, color, and brow wax. I don't know how it all breaks out, but if I had to guess, the hair cut is about $35, the color is about $45, and the brow wax is about $10. When I get hi-lites (every other appointment) that's another $60 or so plus tip. I'm almost thinking about not getting them again until summer to save a few $$...
