My realtor who is selling my home on the opposite coast just sent me an email letting me know that my smoke detector batteries need to be replaced and the beeping is distracting and "needs to be addressed immediately". I am currently trying really hard not to fire back the email response I would like to. What do you think people, should I hop on a plane and go take care of the battery emergency? My closest family is 2 hours from this home. Ugh. I hate this home, I wish someone would just buy it. Or burn it down. Whatevs. Anywho, hope the beeping isn't too annoying to the NO ONE that lives there. I know it is not the realtors job to change the batteries, but well, I am still annoyed by her email ok?

This realtor would be in line for a commission if she sold the home? Is that commission SO small that it would be seriously reduced by the price of a few batteries? Sheesh! You're so much more restrained than I would be, dakcp2001. I think I'd have sent that email.

What did she want you to do about it from across the country? :confused3

How hard would it be for her to just replace them? She sounds like a real winner.

I would explain that it's impossible for me to change them and ask her if she could. If she says no, I would fire her. She's working for you, she's going to make commission, she could at least change out a few batteries.

You know what, I think it IS their job. If they take on a listing for someone moving out of town, part of showing the house is keeping it up. I don't expect them to clean the house by any means but for crying out loud, at least take the battery out--it's not like a smoke detector is going to save anyone in an EMPTY house.

She suggested I have my family member drive 2 hours to check on them. I am really holding back here people!!!!!! She is a total knob. Useless on all fronts, including selling the home. I am contracted with her til October.

Read your contract, there is most likely a clause in there for underperformance or failure to do her job...

At the very least--CC her broker on the email you send back suggesting that the commission she is making on the sale of your house would more than cover a couple batteries...

Just because you are contracted with her until October does not mean you must stay with her until then. You have a couple of options - you may stay with the same realty agency but change agents or you may change realty agencies. I would definitely be dropping the agent you currently have. Good luck selling your house.

This!!! We just sold our house and I am sure that in our contract there was an option to get out of it early if we felt the relator was not performing her job properly.

If it were me, I'd just ask if she could change the batteries if you reimburse he for them.

Nah, I'd leave those batteries right where they are.

I'd also be tempted to tell her exactly where she could put the batteries, but what I would really do is send this:

Dear ______,
Your employee has informed me that the smoke dectector battries in the house your agency is selling for me need to be changed. As I am x thousand miles away, would you please hire this done for me, and I would be happy to reimburse you up to x amount.

Thank you,

to her boss at the agency.

Best of luck getting a buyer soon! I know how stressful it is to have to sell after you move.

I would imagine that an real estate agency would have handymen available just for this sort of thing. Is this the first out-of-state contract that they've had to handle? Perhaps they're just looking for your written permission to get someone in there to change the batteries. What about the lawn? Who's taking care of that? Did they put someone in place or did you? Do you have a neighbor you can ask?

Some realtors even bake cookies for say an "open house" or whip up some potpouri stuff and this fool can't replace batteries for a presentation? :confused3:rotfl:

I second cc email to her company.

I would just tell her to take out the batteries. I would have to say something in the email....like...really?:confused3

That is absolutely ridiculous! Her job is to sell your house! If it's bothersome to her or prospective buyers, you'd think she'd have the commonsense to change them, especially given your distance away. She sounds difficult...I'd switch. I wouldn't want someone that incompetent being the spokeperson for my home. I'd ask her to either change the batteries please, or just let her keep listening to the beeping, lol.

I would see about firing that Realtor. Or at least call her home office and see what they think about this.

Goodness, as a pp said, just TAKE THEM OUT!! No need to replace them until the house is occupied.

You could put a $5.00 battery allowance in the asking price. :lmao:
