what do you do if your late teens are being irresponsible. I have twin sons who are 18 and college freshman. They are good kids who go to school, hold jobs, etc. But they, one esp. can be so stupidly irresponsible. One son has a parking ticket he didn't pay. He gets a late notice and forgets about it. I remind him and he says he'll take care of it. But has he, no. Today I said you are not going out the door til you put that payment in an envelope and call them and tell them you sent it, even if you are late to work. So it gets done. Other son went to prom last week, then went back to college to finish out exams. Asked brother to take back tux. Tux did not go back, place is calling upset and there will be a huge charge for this. Other son parked his car in county lot, left it there for five days as he's been working 12 hour days. Was warned and yep, it got towed. Cost today to pick it up, $185. That was his first paycheck.
Both boys are currently broke as they use their summer savings to pay for school and related expenses and won't get paychecks for another week or two. They need their car, they share, to get to work. No alternate transportation available. They seem unconcerned about this. They'll just take their first paychecks and fix everything. They can't get the concept of wasted money. Most of these things could have been avoided by a simple phone call. I have lent them money when it involves keeping a car on the road but I want them to be responsible men. I've got to find a way to hit them with this so they are so miserable they will learn the lesson. They don't use the car for anything but going to work.
