Earthquakes! Being from Chicagoland, not something we ever, ever think about. But, there we were, many years ago, at DL, and they announced that 3-4 rides had to close due to "an earthquake" in nearby ???? I don't remember WHERE, but I recall KNOWING it was not anywhere close to Anaheim. We felt nothing. The CMs said there was a very small tremor - what I thought was very far away - but that they closed down several rides so they could do a walk-through to ensure the structural integrity of the rides. We heard about the earthquake - it was a 4.something on the Richter scale, on the news, so we know it wasn't a BS excuse to shut down the rides. I don't remember what rides, but there were many that were closed throughout that day for a few hours at a stretch. It made me feel very safe that they checked the rides so thoroughly when NOTHING was felt at DL, but was considered close enough that it could interfere with the safety of the rides.
Next trip? We're headed to Joshua Tree National Park. I'm going to one of the lookouts to specifically "look over" the San Andreas Fault. I figure, if the BIG ONE is going to happen while we are visiting California, we'll go quickly ;-)
We were also in the area a few years ago when there was a "Tsunami watch" ... it was ALL OVER the news - stay away from the ocean, stay away from beaches. What did we see on the news? People at the ocean and on the beaches. Again, landlocked Chicagoan here, all I could think about was ... how far would the water go, would it reach Anaheim?? Then, it turned out to be NOTHING but a really blustery day. Oops on the forecasters. Again, guess better safe than sorry. We have tornado warnings at least 7-10 times per year in the midwest (but our area exceptionally rare to get a tornado) that send everyone scrambling, guess the west coast has earthquake & tsunami fears
My greatest fear? That Superhero-themed rides will take over DCA. Oh wait ... that's actually happening
