I'm considering buying an Ipod Touch for my 7-yo son with autism, I'm sure he would love to play games and watch movies on it, just wondering if anyone here has used any of the autism apps and if its really helpful or more of another fun entertainment toy.

He is verbal but still talks in choppy sentences and the elusive when/why questions. He loves electronics (Wii, gamboy, computer, etc).

Thanks :)

We have used the Model Me Apps. It is basically a social story video of going certain places like Dr., Mall, Haircut. My daughter likes it. She also likes the games apps, of course. In general, the Touch is a good device.

She also likes the slider puzzles, bug squash, splat, Jirbomatch, Kids Play, Animal Mechanicals, tic tac touch, and touch physics.

Thanks I will have to look into those!

For communication, a lot of people like Proloquo2Go - it’s expensive, but very powerful and a lot less expensive than a dedicated communication device. A less expensive option that I have heard good things about is called iCommunicate.
If you are on Facebook, both of them have Facebook pages.

This is a good article about iPod touch, iPad and other high tech items for people with disabilities. It also has a list of good apps at the end of the article .

Thanks, will check them out. I don't know what he needs something to help him communicate, but if they have apps with educational games to help him increase his language skills that would be helpful. I hope that makes sense.

I let him play with it this morning, he tried many of the games that you all suggested, thanks for the help!! He loved the touch physics and angry birds. I was hoping to get talking tom working but didnt realize I have to buy a microphone :sad2:

Glad to hear he likes the games.

We found a set of earphones with an inline microphone with the cell phone items for a pretty good price.

I should have been more clear about the Proloquo2Go and iCommunicate Facebbok pages. They are worth a visit even if you dont think you need those programs. Both sites post links to news stories and other things of general interest. You can do an Internet search for them including the word Facebook without having a Facebook page yourself.

Here are a couple of others he might like:
Piano Cats Free - black cats and white cats are the keys

Papertoss

MagicXylo

iDoodle2Lite

Doodle Buddy

Toy Story Mania ( the others are free or under $2, this one is about $5)

Sneezies Lite

Memoryze - nice because you can choose the pictures

More Toast - a little onscreen toaster makes toast and you can choose what to put on. Includes some usual toast things and more unusual things too. Great for conversation. The same company also makes More Pizza and a cupcake one.

ReMovem Free

Gaia - really nice, but very easy and relaxing game

Trace - similar in some ways to Touch Physics. I like it better personally

Flight Control

Thanks I just downloaded several of the items you listed - now can't wait for him to get home from school! LOL

Glad to hear you can get the microphone - next trip to Target I will pick one up!! He really likes the cat so I think it will be a lot of fun when it can talk!

Will check out the facebook pages! Thanks!!

My husband is on the spectrum, and received an ipod touch and a few itunes cards as a gift a little while back. Angry Birds and Touch Physics are his two favorite games, I'm not surprised your son liked them too! He loves Sim games, like PocketGod and Godfinger, and endless games like Doodlejump. The list Sue gave is a great one. There are a ton of apps out there that those on the spectrum will absolutely go nuts for. Topple, GlassTower2, PuzPenguin, and Chromixia are all excellent puzzle games he might like.

If anyone has any sim-type game recommendations, like the old Civilization games for the PC, please pass them on! He's been in search of things like that.

Thank you for more suggestions! My son's most recent obsession for the wii has been "My Sims Kingdom". I had hoped we could use it to our advantage, for instance he has told me that Ben on my Sims Kingdom eats pizza...alas.....Ben in real life tried it once and decided it was too yucky.

I did find a microphone at WalMart yesterday for $9 (inline earphone for cell phone) and it works, and you can still hear externally on the Talking Tom game. He loves it, but it will be work to get him to talk and not just make funny noises for the cat to repeat. I expected that. :upsidedow
