I'm suddenly getting a pop-up stating "Device charging not compatible with this accessory". I unplugged and replugged, I turned the danged thing off and on, and the green battery with the plug is showing - for a few minutes, the icon was just the battery.

Anybody have any thoughts what might be wrong?

Is this the same cable and/or charger you have always used? If it's the same charger and/or cable you have always used, I have no idea why it would start doing that all of a sudden. Maybe there is a chance the cable or charger has gone bad (if that is possible), I really don't know.

If it is a new or different cable and/or charger...I don't know how to fix it, but I have seen it happen w/certain chargers.

I have an old charger that worked on my original iPhone, and I get that same message on the iPhone 4 about not being compatible. Also, get that same message when trying to use one of those USB nightlight plugins. It will charge an old iPod touch, but not an iPad or newer iPod touch or iPhone 4. I think it has something to do with older chargers and newer versions of iPods/iPhones/iPads.

Also, I have a generic cable that will work on an old iPod touch but NOT the newer stuff.

I'll be watching this thread for sure to see if anybody knows of a fix.

Thanks. It's a newer charger with an older iPod. The iPod is 3rd generation, and I've been using this charger for about two and a half months. What's really interesting is that the battery icon fluctuates between full-power and charging :confused3.

Did you recently update the OS? That could be one reason for the incompatibility warning.

The only other reason I can think of is that perhaps your battery is punking out on you.

Is this a USB charger that's plugged into a computer, or are you charging directly from a wall socket?

You may want to try another cord. DH had this happen once and it was his cord - he tried another cord and it was fine. Another thing, are you getting this message when its plugged into the wall or computer? If it's the wall, it could be a problem with the plug piece itself. Do you have another you can try?

Also, when you powered it off, did you shut it down all the way and reboot? My Touch (first generation) is old and cranky so I have to reboot it once a week.

It's plugged into the wall. I can't find the USB charger at the moment, but I'll try that later. What's really weird is, as long as I keep it plugged in, the battery isn't going down.

We go through them like crazy and this is the info we often get when one has died.

We have lots of i devices of various ages and swap out the chargers all the time. We have recently had a rash of cables that have stopped working. I was able to confirm it was just the cables by switching out various cables and plugs.

Thanks, everyone! A (much) closer look in bright daylight showed the problem is the charger cable.
