hi there ..
we were thinking of chipping in and buying an ipod touch for a family member as he keeps talking about it ?? any owners and lovers out there ??

what is so great about this... and are all applications free ??
meaning will he have to pay extra for anything else ..

love to hear your opinions / comments ...
I do not personally know anyone that owns one of these !
thanks !

I finally bought one for myself....and I love it!!! My husband has a blackberry and he wants a iTouch now as well - he thinks mine is more user friendly. I love having pictures, games, videos, movies, podcasts, internet access, and of course the music. I would go over to the Podcast site and post there - they are probably experts and can recommend some good applications.

How old is this individual?

I love my touch. It is a great player, has tons of apps, and is really cool on a trip.

Not every application is free. It comes with several that are free, but most of the really cool games etc. are applications. Some are only 99 cents, but they can be just about any price.

What I liked about my touch over other MP3 players was the sound clarity when I got it. It sounds wonderful. It is also really good to have as a calendar, organizer, e-mailer, etc.

You do have to have Wi-Fi connections for many of the really cool features of the touch to work however (email, SMS texting, connection to Itunes, etc.) If you have a wireless connection at your home or their home, that will work for all the home stuff. On trips and outside the home, you will need to rely on free Wi-Fi found at most McDs, Starbucks, Borders, etc. However, the music always works on the touch.

I have it and LOVE it!!

They will need to download iTunes on their computer (free). From there they can load it up with music they already own or stuff through iTunes.

It is NOT all free - however there is a TON that is free. Every week they come out with about 3 free songs, 1 free music video, and some tv shows. Quite a variety. There's TONS of applications from games to exercise to cooking. TONS are free. Some you have to pay for.

If this family member is young, you'll want to make sure iTunes is set up so that it asks for a password every time they download something. If it's for an adult they can set it up as they please, of course!

When I bought it I said that the ONLY things I wish it had was a camera and phone. LOL - so I eventually got the iPhone. Anyways, it plays music, tv, movies, podcasts, games, etc etc etc. You can have contacts in it. You CAN get to the internet, just have to be in a WiFi area. ETC.! :goodvibes

Oh! And a lot of the paid apps have a free "preview" version so that you can download it and test it. Often times...I find that I don't even need to download the full version because the preview keeps me entertained. LOL

love all the input here !!

are they any special websites for free downloads or is apple the one.

haha ha ... after reading here .. i want to buy one for myself...

its for a cousin .. in his 30s.... and i have heard him talk about this ...

we were thinking of getting him a 16GB .. is this size good enough for music and downloads .. I know there is a bigger one... but of course more expensive and out of our budget !!

I want one, but no money here to buy it. :sad2:
Well..... I could, but it would not be the smart way to spend the money right now. :sad2:

Be aware that the iPod Touch is not an iPhone without the phone. It doesn't have a camera, microphone, or GPS. Internet access is only through Wi-Fi, unlike the iPhone which supports access through wireless phone connectivity as well. That being said, I love mine, but make sure you know what the giftee wants to do with it.

thanks for the info... this was what I thought it was !

I *love* mine!

I did pay $20 to upgrade the software, so any application that was for the iphone would also work. This was a year or so ago.. perhaps that isn't the case anymore.

I do 99% free apps. DS12 gave me a gift card for christmas, so I've been slowly splurging on some paid apps.

My 13yr old dd and I each have one. We both love them, but she REALLY loves hers. It's never more than 12 inches away from her. She uses it all the time. She does buy a few applications, but she finds TONS of free ones. She has some the silliest stuff on there, but it's pretty cool stuff she finds.

I have an ITouch. I love it. I went from a shuffle to the ITouch, so quite a big jump. If they currently have a regular IPod, they'll find that the amount of "stuff" that the ITouch can hold is much much smaller. I personally don't have a problem. I have the middle one (what is it, 8, 16 and 32?) and only have like 25% filled up. My boyfriend is kind of amazed at that. He liked my ITouch so much (the first night he played with it more than I did! :lmao:) that he got the new IPhone when it came out. He had a really hard time cutting his music collection down to fit on his IPhone because it just doesn't hold as much as the classic IPod.

Ooo I like this thread.

DBF is getting me one for my birthday in about a week and a half. I've had my iPod Mini for about 5 years now.. so I'm definitely do for an upgrade! I use the Mini constantly.. driving, exercising, sometimes at work too! I can't wait to get one!

Love my ipod touch. I have some apps some free some paid for. Mostly games that I like or a few that my nephews asked me to put on it for them. I have my music and photos on it. But those games are great for killing time when waiting or bored.

I usually put a movie on it when we travel. I have a large gb Classic so it holds most of my movies but we ended up wanting to watch it more than the travel dvd (so big and clunky in a carry on) while on the plane so I bought the small 8gb touch as a secondary. While three of us couldn't share one device it's better to have two ipods. And it's ended up being used just as much as my classic sometimes more.

I also download audiobooks from my library's website to listen to at the gym. The touch is smaller and sits on the treadmill and bikes better than my classic.

Work has free wifi so I use it at work to mess around on. But honestly the wifi may be the least used feature on my touch. I will say I like the wifi but you have to get the hang of the touch screen and tapping a small area to work the web.

Didn't want it for the phone or camera (hate open face phones), and also didn't want to pay 100 dollars a month for service, so a Touch seemed to be a good fit for me. Everyone that I know that has one loves it. I still love my classic more LOL but that Touch is sure nifty.

I THINK you have to get the applications from iTunes. I know it's possible to jailbrake the iPhone and download apps through that...but from what I've seen they aren't as good. And there are SO MANY free ones on iTunes that you really won't need to.

Music of course you can find everywhere.

DVDs/TV shows if you have some sort of DVD ripper you can add them to iTunes that way or some DVDs now come with a digital copy that will go right into iTunes.

:)

The 16GB is fine! Most people aren't going to listen to hundreds of hours of music in one sitting anyways, lol. He can make playlists and add different ones, etc. And even the 16GB holds a LOT of music and apps, etc.

DD18 and I both have Itouches, and we love them. We share an Itunes account, so if either one of us purchases an app, the other can download it for free. (We're on separate computers.)

I used to use Palm Pilots, and had my life in it. My schedule, work records, contact info, birthdays, etc. I've found I can use the Itouch for all the same things, and so much more.
