My DD13 is getting a 5th generation iPod Touch, and passing down her 4th gen to her 8 year old brother (for Christmas). She can get engraving for free - 2 lines, 33 characters each.

Since she is going into high school next year, we were thinking something along the lines of "Reward if returned" with her name and a phone #, or MY e-mail address. Maybe instead of our home #, my parents suggested their home #.

Would you engrave, yes or no? What would you put?

Honestly, no i would not engrave unless you will never give it away, pass it down, or even expect that someone will return it (by putting a number etc)
IF it goes missing, sadly, it likely wont be because your daughter lost it, but rather, that it was swiped by someone...hope that does not happen.
If it is to commemorate something...Xmas etc, I guess you can say the holiday and year or something that only means something to her, a family nickname perhaps?
Have a Lovely Holiday Season

I just bought my DD (11) a iPad Mini for the holidays and also was stumped on what to engrave on the back.

She is a real Walt Disney fan so I put a quote from Walt on the back that read "When you're curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.-W.D." (I ran out of space to spell out Walt Disney - but she will know who it is :)

That made it personal - but not too corny. Which is critical with a preteen. :thumbsup2

I would not engrave it. When she wants to upgrade (and she will), no stores will take it, and very few people will want to purchase an engraved iPod.

My husband killed my daughters first iPod touch by dropping it in some water.

Her replacement was engraved with
No no I can't swim!
RIP former iPod

It was more fore fun than security.

If you engrave it, it is yours for the rest of it's working life. Stores won't take it as trade in, it would be harder to sell (and impossible to sell if you put a name or number on it), and less appreciated if you try to give it away or pass it down to younger siblings.

Don't engrave for the same reason you don't put permanent bumper stickers on your car, it reduces there sale/reuse value.

I had not thought of a resale value. I guess I was thinking she would have this for at least 3 years, if not 5 years. Then give it to her brother or someone else in the family.

Yes, sadly enough it's true that it's more likely to be stolen then lost/misplaced. And if misplaced, the person finding would more likely keep it. My hope was it might increase the chance of getting back if a person had easy contact info (and reward). Or a parent wondering how their child suddenly aquired an iPod sees the info on the back and phones.

That is a good thought. Instead of a name, it might be better to put "the so-and-so family".

Mine, mine, mine :rotfl:

I found one I like if I ever get anything engraved. "There are many like it, but this one is mine" Though I like the "Mine, mine, mine" also. :)

I got DD's engraved, a lot of them come up missing at school. They usually put cases on them anyway so you don't see the engraving.

DS11.5 will be receiving a ITouch 5 this Christmas, and I asked him if he wanted his name engraved on it ...his response, "No mom, why would I want my name on it? If someone steals it, do you really think they will give it back if my name is on it?" He has a point (sad, but true). He wants "Boston" engraved on the first line and "Bruins" on the second line. Whatever ....

I know no one will want to buy it after (unless he/she is a Bruins fan, lol), but I would probably be the person who inherits it after many a year, and I could care less what is engraved on it.

Dear Jonny,
Please don't wash this one.
Love, Santa

This is on the back of my DS19's new ipod. ;)

Every Apple ipod we've bought has been engraved. It makes it more special in our family's eyes. First one for DD said "Hands off Devon's Ipod" , another said "No, you can't borrow Hanna's ipod" DH gave me a nano with a special phrase, our names, date we started dating and wedding date. For 25th anniversary, i gave dh one with "and then you find 25 years have got behind you" with dates (he's a huge Pink Floyd fan and i changed the 10 to 25 in the lyric) DD's current one has a quote by her favorite artist, the other has a song lyric that means a lot. No we won't ever trade them in, any more than I'd trade a piece of jewelry in that was a special gift. Being of limited means, these were all huge gifts, in most cases the only gift they received that year. I now have my oldest DD's first ipod touch, and the engraving makes me laugh and remeber her face when she got it.
Twice the girls misplaced their ipod at school, and because of the engraving, got them back right away.

I guess it all ends up to how important a gift it is, and how long you plan on keeping it.

You should engrave it with something personal and funny, so when you go to resell it I can talk you way down! The Apple store won't buy it back, and I won't mind because I can always put a case on it!! :thumbsup2

OR, you are 13 and don't need a freaking 5th gen ipod..

holy cow... amazing..

I always find it amazing when a poster chooses to chastise the OP for something they personally feel is wrong instead of answering the OP's question.

I don't have an idea for the engraving but I can relate to the mom who got her daughters IPod and smiles each time she sees the engraving
