My DD14 bought an ipod touch(4th gen) with her birthday cash in April and has had it mostly sitting on an iHome to listen to music. It has been taken on/off a few times and now can't be plugged in! This happened to her last one too! We are past the return window at Target(and I didn't buy the extended warranty). They said the charging connection looks bent. Has this happened to anyone? Any idea how much apple will charge to fix?

I'm sorry I have no idea how much it is to fix it but take it into an Apple store if you live near one. We had one and my dh put it through the washer. Completely our fault we took it in with no warranty and they gave us new one. I know that it wasn't likely to happen and wouldn't ever expect it again. But hey you never know. Good luck!

Btw we also had the same exact thing happen to our charging port from sitting on a Sony brand Ihome. That Itouch is sitting in a drawer somewhere. I'd avoid the ihomes from now on.

I had this happen. As long as it is still under the warranty Apple will replace it. But....DON'T tell them you used a dock though just tell them it won't charge and that you've tried connecting thru the computer and by plugging it into the wall. If you have more than one Ipod cord try those as well.

Also, call apple and make an appointment to take it into the store. If you have an appointment they will see you right away if you don't and it's a busy day you could be waiting several hours before they will help you.

Was the iPod Touch only on the 4th Gen this last April? I bought my niece and nephew iPod Touches for Christmas 2011 and they were 4th gen. Was this a refurb? I guess not because you got it at Target and I thought only Apple could sell the refurbs. But I could be wrong.

My advice, take it to the closest Apple store and just tell them that the device won't hold a charge. They'll likely replace it with a new one. They may fix it for free, but more likely they'll replace it.

We had the same thing happen with my nephew's iPod touch, but we were 8 months past Apple's one year warranty. However, I purchased the iPods with my AMEX card. I've been an AMEX member since the early 90s and have never used the extended warranty....never had to.

Went to their website, and filed the claim on-line. It was so easy. I expected that I'd have to take the device to Apple, get an estimate, and then they'd either repair it or replace it. I was shocked when I heard back that they were simply crediting my account for the full $230 (device plus shipping/tax). :)

So, we purchased him a 4th gen refurb....just with more memory. He had an 8 gig, now he has a 16 gig. His sister still has her 4th gen iPod, and we didn't want to have hurt feelings by giving him a brand new one. By brand new, I mean...the latest generation. We wanted his new iPod touch to at least look like hers.

It was great to know that AMEX worked so well. One caveat, if we'd purchased a refurb to begin with, the AMEX extended warranty does not apply...at all. So, the refurb we bought him comes with the one year Apple warranty. By then he'll probably be ready to upgrade anyway.

Thanks for all the advice. We'll try to get to an apple store soon. They aren't made to last, that's for sure.

You can't leave the iPod in the charger all day. It is constantly wearing on the battery. When you get a new one make sure you take it off and let the battery drain before recharging. I have an iPod as well as all 3 kids have iPods that are years old. No problems with charging.

I had the same problem with my sons ipod touch. I took it to apple this past weekend and they will not replace it because it is damaged just like yours. Our ipod touch is only six months old. They told me the warranty does not cover damage. They told me I could pay $100 to get a new one and it does not have full warranty, only six months because that is all that is left on my previous one. I was really disappointed, let us know how you make out with apple and what the outcome is.

I've heard it is bad for one to leave it on the charger all the time.

I have one of those iHome clock radio things too, but I do not use it as a charger. I use one of those cables like you use to plug it into your car stereo and use the "line in" option to listen to music through it. The main reason is because I have my iPhone in an Otter Box and it will not fit on the iHome charger. The remote won't work that way, but it is better for the life of your iPod/iPhone to do it that way instead of the constant being on the charger.

The problem(s) described above though are about the plug connector on the device being bent, not a problem caused by leaving on the charger all the time. It's because when the devices sit on a charger like an iHome where they are standing up straight but without much support for the back, they have a tendency to get pushed/pulled while the bottom is still plugged in or just not seated in the iHome gently enough. Too many times (or even a few rough times) will bend the dock connector. That would only be covered by a warranty that covers accidental damage and handling damage (like some of the Squaretrade and other 3rd party warranties).

We went to the apple store last night and got the same answer.......you can buy a new one for $99. No thanks.

I had problems with my itouch as well and apple wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount to fix it. I ended up going to a local independent store and they did it for 1/3 if the price. See if your area has any places that do cell repairs. If they do then they should do itouch too.
