My DD inherited my 1st generation iPod Touch. The problem is it doesn't hold a charge for more than 2 or so hours. The Apple website says the charge to have it replaced is $79. Has anyone had to replace their battery? If so, did you do it yourself or have Apple do it?

I haven't had to replace any of my batteries on the integral Apple products yet. There are a ton of YouTube videos if you try it; I've seen it done, and it does not seem to be a very difficult process. I would say that your comfort level in the process should be the deciding factor.

We trashed an older iPod trying to replace the battery, despite buying a kit to do it (with the proper tools and the battery and directions) AND watching numerous Youtube videos. And my DH is pretty handy. I don't recommend doing it yourself unless you are good with small electronics already.

We had the same problem with our not very old ipod touch. Took it to the apple store and it said it had a bunch of apps running in the background that were sucking up battery power even when not in use. I'm guessing the netflix app. So the tech reset everything and for now I don't sync any of the apps. That has helped.

How do you make sure the apps aren't running in the background?

We looked in to having the battery replaced on my second gen Ipod touch before Christmas because I handed it down to my son when I got a new one. When you sync the Ipod, there is an option to recieve push notifications or instant updates, you do not want to do this to preserve battery life. I also uninstalled apps that I knew were doing this, like Facebook. To make extra sure it wasn't happening, I turned off Wifi. It helped a ton, but the battery life still isn't good as new (but fine for my ten year old!). My husband talked to the the people at the Apple store about the battery replacement, and when you mail it in, they simply give you a refurbished Ipod. The guys at the store said that replacing the battery in a touch is nothing like the other models, and it really cannot be done without trashing the Ipod. I'm not sure how they go about it if you have an engraved machine that you want back, but for the most part they just swap out the Ipod when you send it in for battery replacement. Hope that helps, just my experience.
