Okay-my brother hates (when I say hate, it is with a fiery passion) the fact that I have (mostly) Disney songs on my iPod/iTunes and we share the software that puts music on the iPods. Is there any possible way that we can make a file for him and a file for me so that my directory ONLY updates my songs and his directory ONLY updates his songs?

Thanks SO much!!

your iTunes library is just that. set up a playlist for you and your brother and synch from the library.

THe easiest way is to just make each of you your own playlist, then set it to only load your selected playlists. THis is what I do for myself and both of my girls. After you set up your playlist, plug in your iPod, the summary page comes up. GO to music and deselect the all songs and playlists and select the selected playlists. Just check the ones you want.

You need to use "manual" setting when you plug in your iPod and choose either your playlist or your brother's playlist. Do you understand what a playlist is?

If you hold down shift while starting iTunes, you can select while library to use :)

Okay-thanks for the responses!

So...
-I make my own play list
-And synch it to there? Am I understanding it right (it's been a LONG day)?

I'll try it and report back.

make your own playlist, drag your music from the library, and then synch from there.

Okay-playlist made. Now how do I synch? Well, let me rephrase that. I know how to get to the little iPod icon that lists all of the options like "Automatically update all playlists" and such. What buttons do I choose to allow me to synch?

Sorry if I sound like such a person who left her brain behind. Thanks for all the help!

Wow! I had seen questions like the OP's a lot (including here in my own house where we have five Ipods) but had never seen this tip. Just tried it and it works.

Of course, the playlist option suggested by most posters on this thread means you only have to have one copy of a song on your hard drive. While the alternative library option would mean, in my case, setting up 5 libraries each with its own copy of the popular songs which would mean more disk space usage.

DId you get it to work? All you had to do was deselect the automatically load all playlists and select the ones you want.

It worked!! Thanks for *all* your help!

rcraw-that was just what I needed :) Thanks!!

Amity 3, RobInBigKC, Tinijocaro, Bansai-thanks for your help too! You all helped a little bit :) Thanks!

Great! I know it's hard for me, having two kids, to keep everything straight. They have shuffles, which have a little different controls, no screen, etc. I had the hardest time figuring out how to have multiple units on one library ( I didn't know that you could have multiple libraries, thanks for the heads up, Banzai!). This playlist thing works for me, plus, DH recently discovered the joys of iPod (he had laughed last year when I bought one ), so I could mkae his playlist as well. Good luck and enjoy, they're addictive!
