To engrave or not that is the ?

soon to be 10 year old girl. I would probably either do a we love and her name or just her name.

or nothing.

opinions?

I vote for nothing, in case you want to resell on ebay. We've upgraded a few times with our boys Ipods, and I was so happy we decided not to engrave.

I think the engraving option is neat. There are some pretty clever sayings I've seen too! Google it to find some ideas; I can't remember most of the ones I've seen but I had found a neat list of suggestions one time. Stuff like "Hands off! This is not your iPod!", "Help! Get me out of here!", etc. Before I was aware of making clever engravings, I just got my husband's name etched on there (it was a gift). For mine though I got "Laura's little box of music".

ETA: JuniJay, good point. I've never sold anything on ebay so I wouldn't have thought of that, but if that is a likely option then maybe getting an engraving isn't the best idea. If it's not an option then I like getting a clever saying!

We engraved with our son's name and birthdate. We got the whole shebang on the first shot so we won't be upgrading. If he wants a new one someday, his old one will be his father's new toy, lol! My nephew had his engraved IPOD stolen at school. Don't think of engraving as a theft deterrent.

I engraved with my son's name and our phone number. He hasn't lost it (yet) but I thought this would help us get it back if he ever did.

I thought about engraving them too. I wonder if it would have made a difference to the punk that stole my DD's i-Pod. We'd never sell our nanos, just hand them down thru the family.

I'm also wondering though, does engraving void the warranty? Anyone know?

My daughter got an ipod as a "gift" from her boyfriend. Seriously, my eyes are rolling so hard that I'm surprised you all can't hear them. :lmao: Anyway, on the back it said "Celia Anne's ipod" or whatever her name was. I asked my son who that was, it turns out that it's Super Boyfriend's ex-girlfriend. I made my daughter track this girl down and let her know that she had her ipod. Had it not been engraved, we wouldn't have known who it belonged to.
It probably helps that we live in a small town with only one high school and everyone knows everyone else. I'd get the engraving though, just in case it could help get it back to her if it's lost or stolen.

It shouldn't void the warranty if it's Apple that is doing the engraving (it's actually laser etching). However, if you get an outside party to engrave it then that would probably void the warranty. Please check with Apple though to be absolutely positive.

I had my DH's initials engraved on his shuffle. Selling it on eBay never occured to me, but I don't think it would have changed my opinion on engraving.

I had mine engraved since I never plan to sell it. It is a nano and it says:

Gary: "Meow!"

and then my name underneath! Figured it would be useful to have my name on it if it ever got lost/stolen (easy to identify and/or prove that you are the owner!)

My friend got:

Limited Edition
Number 26 of 50

engraved on his :lmao:

I saw on the internet someone put their email and then some sort of short message that would make the person that stole it feel really bad. :P

We put our son's name on his, figured it could help if it was ever taken by a kid at school.

Two DSs got them for Christmas two years ago. Both wanted black. Ingraving prevented mix ups.

Get it... It can become an identifying mark on it in case it gets stolen. While on jury duty it was mentioned that during the police breifing it was reported a ipod was stolen that had a specific word engraved on it (it wasn't the guy name but some word I forget). Anyways they (the police) did a search on a house and found the ipod. They knew it was stolen right away because of the engraving. Anyways, just something to think of.

I also think it depends on the kid. My kids hate anything with words on it – tshirts have to be plain, backpacks cannot be monogrammed, etc. – apparently it takes away the cool factor for them.

Ipods are banned at our school, so we have no worries about someone stealing one from them there. They use their Ipods around the house, at the pool, or walking to a friend’s house, that sort of thing. Fortunately no one has lost their Ipod. We went from the Minis to the Nanos and it cost me next to nothing to upgrade since I was able to sell their Minis on ebay. I personally have never wanted to upgrade, I love my pink Mini, but they wanted the video feature from the Nano.

We had "words to live by" engraved on DD's iPod Nano. It says:

Honesty, Intelligence,
Compassion, Love

I did it with all ours, name and phone number. If someone is going to steal it, they';ll steal it. But if we leave it someplace, at least there is a chance someone would call. (use the area code too since everyone travels with their ipods)

We had DD's first one engraved "Happy 18th Birthday Brianne, Love Mom & Dad". Someone broke into her truck and stole it at the mall. The second one she bought herself and it was stolen from her purse at a party. We bought her third one for Christmas last year and had it engraved "Third times a charm". The engraving is free when ordered from Apple's website. I love personalizing things. ;)
