Other than being able to place and receive phone calls are there any other differences between the iPhone and the touch?

The iphone has a camera unlike the touch and of course with the touch you'd only have internet when wifi is available...with the iphone you'd likely have a dataplan so you'd have 24/7 access to the internet.

I don't have AT&T wireless and I've been thinking about getting a Touch, I just can't decide if I should go ahead and get one or wait around until some rumoured date in the future when Verizon might have the iPhone.

I've also heard rumor that Verizon could be getting the iphone, sometime in 2010, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm looking at the Touch Pro 2 myself, just waiting for Verizon to get them in stock in the stores so I can try one out (it's the same size as an iphone but thicker).

When I got DD a touch last year I fell in love with it and wanted one myself but the novelty has since worn off.:) It's neat but I already have an ipod and I decided I'd rather hold out and maybe eventually upgrade my phone to a smartphone, I'm glad I did because VZW seems to have a nice selection of phones coming out between now and the end of the year (I'm eligible for New Every Two in early December).

what might one need a microphone for if not talking via phone?
There is an app (an iPod program) that allows you to use the iPhone to record memos (an iPod touch could do this with a microphone attached).

We have Verizon too, so we have iPod touch (touches??) and decided not to wait for the iPhone to come to Verizon.
One of the things to think about with the iPhone or any smart phone is that you are required to carry a pretty expensive data plan. I think when DH checked, it would be something like $2000 a year more.

It's $30 a month per phone, unless you want corporate email also then it's $45. I've been debating about dropping my landline and using that savings towards a dataplan, or at least bundling my phone and internet for a small savings (not sure why I haven't done that before now anyway:upsidedow).

I have both. With the itouch you can can use it to make Skype calls. Just buy a set of earbuds that has a built in microphone. That works where you have wireless. But for anytime access to email or internet, there is no comparison or substitute to the iphone. I am on month to month with the original phone now. I hope it holds out until I know if Verizon will get the service as well. I like the Verizon coverage better, but as I said, no comparison to iphone.

That's not as bad as I heard. I have heard from 2 sources - DH, who may be thinking of all the phones in the family; and people who aff considering whether to get an iPhone or iPod touch to use as a communication device for a child or adult who plans to use a new app called Proloquo2Go to communicate. They would all be talking about using ATT.

What's the earliest people think Verizon MAY have the iPhone? And yes I realize it may never happen.

The earliest I've heard is around Sept. 2010. In time for the holidays. I am holding my breath a little but the iPhone works on a different digital system than Verizon, so I don't know how they plan to work it out.

That's basically what I've heard also based on what little I've read, late 2010 and maybe even into 2011, if even then...supposedly AT&T is trying to stay exclusive with Apple into 2011.

One thing I never knew is that Apple came to Verizon first to be the exclusive distributor of the iphone and VZW rejected the deal, wonder if they're kicking themselves for that one now? :rolleyes1 They seem to be getting a lot of pressure from customers to hurry up and get the iphone but I don't blame AT&T for trying to hang on to the exclusive deal they have with Apple right now because unless they improve their coverage I think they'll lose a lot of customers if VZW ever gets the iphone.
