As my Verizon contract is up on 8/26 I was thinking of holding out on getting a new phone as rumor has it that iphone 6s/7 (whichever new phone will be called) is coming out on 9/25. Does anyone know if I can pre-order a new iphone through Verizon as I will be ready to sign up for another 2 year contract

When they are ready to take pre-orders, everyone will know. I don't believe there has been any formal announcement yet, and I'm sure Verizon won't take orders until it is official. But no worries, once your contract ends on 8/26 you don't have to do anything...you can just wait until you are ready to re-sign, even if it's months after your contract ends. When my contract ended, I waited more than a year to start a new one...they just leave your plan the same. No big deal, no worries.

New iPhones will be announced next month and available for pre-order usually a week later

I was just coming to post this. It also says that existing customers can keep their old plans "with some restrictions." Wonder what those will be?

I don't know, there are alot of conflicting opinions out there. I'm curious to see what happens to the phone prices. We don't do contracts, and we buy our phones outright anyway but I'm hoping this will cause some of the newer released Verizon phones to drop.

The prices are set by the manufacturers so I can't see that happening. Perhaps incentives though, gift card, so much off your bill etc.

I meant what will happen to the prices at the manufacturer level. Are people going to be willing to spend $700 on a phone, and if they are are they going to be so quick to upgrade when the latest and greatest come out? Verizon phones on the after market are always so much more expensive than their GSM counterparts. I'm hoping that changes since I have to buy VZ branded phones.

The incentive now is the subsidy you get, but they are doing away with that so I'm not sure how that will change. For people like the OP (existing cust with expiring contracts) who want to upgrade to newest iphone, will she be able to without having to pay full retail.

Well, the phones have always cost the same no matter how they were paid for just with a contract or subsidy it's paid for over time, one with a down payment the other not. I think the reason the carriers are trying to get rid of contracts is that people who are grandfathered in to very old contracts are no longer paying the full amount the older their plan is so they're trying to circumvent that in the future. I don't see the manufacturers lowering their prices to account for a carriers changes. They get their money no matter what, there's no incentive for them to do so. If people stop buying phones from Verison they'll get them somewhere else, kwim?

As mentioned above, she'd pay full retail no matter what, it's just whether it's over time or outright. It looks like she can still do it over time according to those plans.
