Which do you prefer to take with you as your main source of vacation pics? We will have MM. Has anyone used a camera phone as their main photo source? Pros/cons?

There are only two pros I see when using a phone's camera over any other camera: Less gear to carry, and phone cameras are easier to operate for the novice.

I'm meaning no offense but you don't sound like you know much about cameras and photography. Before you spend money on a new camera, read a couple of books, watch a couple of YouTube tutorials and check out blogs on basic camera operation. If you spend $600-plus on a "fancy" Canon camera, you might not have a clue of how to use it, thus it's just money on fire.

Look at the SONY wx80 on amazon. Discontinued but a really nice camera for the price... If you want to splurge go for the SONY RX100...

Camera phones are for web-only snaps in bright daylight of stationary objects. I wouldn't rely on one to capture priceless memories.

So all those people filming wishes on their iwhatnots won't get good memories?

My guess is that the OP is aware of the quality difference between iPhone pics and a Cannon. I suspect she's asking if it's worth the weight/hassle of carrying a nice camera or whether she's "covered" between Memory Maker and her iPhone.

Or maybe I'm just projecting!

Is it worth carrying a big camera around? To me, yes.

You either want a token of the fact that you were there or you want to capture the memory to look as close to what you can get it to the real experience. How you capture it and what you use to capture it on will dictate the final result.

You don't have to carry a big camera around for every moment at the parks. You can pick the special events where you are willing to suck up the hassle of lugging a bigger camera around. The choice is personal. For me it's a no brainer. For others, it's a no brainer that carrying a camera that won't slip into your back pocket is a nuisance.

For me, I wouldn't consider going without my Cannon. The quality difference between it and my iPhone is huge. It's worth it to me to carry it in the park, even in the June sweltering heat. We found a great camera bag that straps to you and hangs on your back. You swivel it around to your front & can unzip and take out the camera without taking the bag off. Pop the camera back in when you're done. It's lightweight and easy to carry. It makes taking the camera hassle free (well, almost...but so worth getting those great pics!)

If i take my DSLR, i take one lens 24-200 and a cross body strap. No Bag, no extra gear, no hassle.

But didn't even take it with me last visit, and am undecided about this one.

I don't have kiddies, and might think differently if i did.

You might be better investing in a really good point and shoot rather than a more advanced DSLR.

This is what I was going to say. It doesn't have to be a choice between iPhone and DSLR.

Even a budget point and shoot is going to take much better pictures than an iPhone. I would never rely on a phone for vacation pictures. Aside from the overall lower image quality, not having optical zoom would be a huge limitation.

When we travel, I take my Nikon D80 and my Panasonic Lumix. Some days I bring the Nikon. If I don't feel like carrying it, I take the Panasonic.

Honestly, we did fine with a point and shoot, my iphone and the Disney photo package. I was more concerned with making the memories than getting photos of them though. We came back with tons of pictures. I suppose they weren't the best quality photos we could possibly have had, but they work for us.

I always take my camera. My iPhone takes decent photos, but they aren't anywhere near as good as my DSLR. I scrapbook as well, so I love taking lots of photos of our vacations. So it just makes sense for me to use my camera.

You should probably take whatever camera you feel most comfortable with. If you have a fancy point and shoot or a DSLR but you have no idea how to really use it, what's the point? I would also consider what you plan on doing with your photos. Do you just want snapshots to share on Facebook? Or do you want to make prints or an album? If so, how big do you want to print them?

I have a Nikon D700. It's large and heavy and I don't take it with me to the parks every day of our vacation. If I know we'll spend all morning doing back to back rides where a DSLR is just going to be in the way, I'm fine with iphone snapshots. But if we'll be watching a parade, or the fireworks, or doing M&Gs, I want my Nikon. I rarely print anything smaller than 8x10, I really prefer to go much larger. Most camera phone pictures just don't look good in print unless they're tiny, and that's my experience using a pro lab and not just Walgreens or similar. If you use Instagram or one of those apps that lets you apply filters, they usually look even worse in print. That being said, there are some people who have truly mastered phone photography and companies that can turn your phone photos into a work of art. So while I personally would not consider leaving my Nikon at home on a vacation, I'm sure plenty of people just use iPhones and are perfectly happy with what they capture.

It wouldn't be a purchase. I already have this camera. It was a gift and unfortunately with phone technology the way it is, I haven't used it or gotten used to it the way I would have 10 years ago. I am a total novice bc we don't go on many big excursions to where I would need anything more than an iPhone:).

Not sure if you could get through bag check with this one, but here's my recommendation:

Click on the image and you will see that it was taken with a Canon. ;)

:rotfl2: But armed with that, you could take care of bag check very quickly! Getting it onto the monorail would be a different matter. Please stand clear of the doors and all that ....
