iPad for Kids

I know OP has a resolution to her question, but I just wanted to point out that it is VERY RUDE to ASSume that someone should "have college paid for for all kids" before even considering a big ticket purchase. What may be a big ticket item for some is a small change item for others (or very carefully planned out and saved for as in OP's case), and BOTH kinds of people frequent the budget board.

Not to mention that there are MANY FAMILIES who don't plan to have entire college education money put aside for their kids. My parents didn't have 1 red cent for my eductation, I'm still paying the sallie mae bills to prove it. We plan to have money put aside for the kids' education, but not footing the entire education bill. (we don't want them to be strapped with the kind of loans I have, but doing work study and taking a few small loans here and there is par for the course for a college education)

Sorry to hop on my soapbox, OP but I simply HATE when people who CANT AFFORD big ticket items as easily as others (or at all) start to judge those who can. And when those who choose to live a on a shoestring budget, make-laundry-soap-from-scratch life judge those who like technology, and other extra fun & frivilous things it really gets under my skin.

Amen to everything above. DS 9 is getting an iPad with his saved up money and he deserves it 100%.

Just bought an IPAD on Sunday and absolutely love it.

Anyway, I am stopping by to ask all you IPAD owners WHAT CARRYING CASE DID YOU GET TO GO WITH THE IPAD and DO YOU LOVE IT????

I ordered a leather cover for my iPad from the M Edge company. They also have Kindle covers and I have been really pleased with the cover I ordered for my Kindle DX, so I was glad to see them come out with an iPad-friendly one so soon. Both covers are made of beautiful leather - my Kindle is a bright red and my iPad a lime green - and they hold the electronic item securely on all four corners. They look like leather books and open like a book, too. They have a leather strap that you use to securely close the cover. I'm crazy about both of them!! They are about $50 each, I think.

Lucky girls, your daughters! The Kindles are amazing. A better reading surface (than the ipad), lighter and battery life that can reach 2 weeks. I maintain not only books on mine, but all the PDF's I need for work, travel, etc. Since we began the transition to using Kindles in the field, I NEVER spend my time in flight watching movies anymore... I just read books on the Kindle or do actual work on my laptop or netbook.

(small hijack - DVCLiz.... are you getting the Guardian?)

lol - we are a Kindle loving family!!! I don't think I'm going to order the Guardian, though - we only have one Kindle 2 and it belongs to DD21. Although we are going to the beach for a week, I don't think she'll do much Kindle reading on the beach, and she'll be starting her first job soon after and won't be reading at the beach. Hmm, although her new apartment complex does have a pool...but I hope she won't read it there due to possible theft. I'll wait and see.

If they make one for the DX I'll probably order it - I ordered some kind of dry pack from Amazon for all three Kindles last year but we have ended up not using them - too bulky and weird. I think the Guardian has a much nicer look to it.

Thanks, Liz.
Is this the one you got?

We have the official Apple iPad Case

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC361ZM/A?cid=CDM-US-OM-SN-0000100-s1-ipadcase021910

DH got that one because you can fold it in different ways and make a stand.

We ordered the Apple one as well, after looking at the one my boss has. It is scheduled to arrive about a month after we ordered it, but should be here just before our DL trip.

I saw one of the Apple employess with one of the bags from Waterfield/sfbags and am wondering if I should have gotten that. It is just a pocket, but it would mean I could easily add a strap. I have one for their bags for my laptop and love the design and execution, with a separate detachable pouch for cords, etc. -- Suzanne

I have a dedicated little saver - she is now just $50 away! There have been several things she wanted and I told her that she could get it from her ipad money and she moved on!

She had a picture frame she returned to a Hallmark store for 1st communion and we exchanged it for a Mini Laptop Case from Vera Bradley to store her ipad in.

Yes, that's it. And you can charge it while its in the case - same charging slot on the bottom as all other Apple products.

Btw, the iPad does not charge from the computer or the car charger that works with my iPhone - you must plug it into a wall socket.

This case can be folded back on itself to form a sort-of stand, but it's not very efficient for that purpose. My girls got me a Griffin stand for the iPad that works much better if I want to stand it up. Mostly, though, I either use it balanced on my lap if I am sitting or on my stomach if I am lying down.

The OP did say..."... but I can't help but wonder if I am crazy! "

That does seem to open the door to "why yes, yes you are a bit" if people feel it is.

I was very responsible by 9; my mom had fired several babysitters b/c they were useless, and then I was the one taking care of me and my brother until mom got home from work...

But I'm not sure I would have trusted myself with something like that! (if it had existed then, of course)

Heck, even adults break and lose things. Accidents happen.

So do you have a plan for who replaces it if an accident happens?

I didn't mind if people said she might be too young - but to say it is wrong to use 1st Communion money was my issue! I wasn't looking for approval on how she chooses to spend her money - rather opinions on if this is something people are getting their kids and how it is working out for them.

If she breaks or loses it - then it is her fault. But she has been responsible with her ipod and DS - so I am sure she will do fine with it! She knows full well if something happens to any of those that Mom and Dad won't pay to replace them. Shoot - I won't pay for it the first time so I certainly won't pay for a replacement. We do plan on looking at an extra warranty plan. In the grand scheme of life - its just a thing and if something happens to it - she will learn a valuable lesson in responsibility.

I have talked to a lot of people who have them and their kids love them - so I am happy to let her spend her own money on it!

I wouldn't purchase one for a 9 yar old...I think it is just waaay too much money, but it is her money, and how she chooses to spend it, within limits, of course, is her decision. I do have to agree with waiting for the second edition, though. Another issue, and I'm not sure about this, but it is my understanding that you need to pay a monthly access fee. (please if I'm wrong, IPad owners, correct me) Who will be responsible for paying for that? Who will be responsible for paying for apps?

Just some thoughts.

The 2nd generation will be out quite soon if you can wait. Also, since she is younger make sure you get the best warranty available.

ALSO my daughters (10 and 12) both have laptops, and both have iPod touches. I don't allow them to read digital books though - I want them to have the experience and feel of a good book :D My younger daughter got an Ipod when she was 8 for her birthday as a combined present from our extended family and she was meticulous with it. So there are careful kids out there! She never even got a scratch in the Hannah Montana case she bought for it :D

The iPads are gorgeous!

We can easily afford an iPad for our children. I just bought myself a Nook yesterday. :goodvibes

But no way would I ever buy an iPad for my 9 year old DD. She has an iPod (handed down from her older brother) and paper books to read.

That's all she needs at 9. ;)
