I'm glad to see this thread. I have been thinking of this fencing for quite a while. We have 3 acres and it is actually 75% fenced in. We also have remote control collars for the dogs. We have had 5 dogs over the years - 3 German Shorthaired Pointers, a Weim and an Italian Greyhound mix. Currently we have a Weim, Greyhound and GSP.

We like the remote control collars because they travel with us for hiking, etc. But - our neighbors put food out for the birds across the street and the neighbors along one side have horses and Chloe Monster likes to bring home little treats from them. I really want to wire this place up where we don't have fencing.

And as others have said, the shock isn't much of a shock. At least on our collars it is quite adjustable. And so much less expensive and devastating to "shock" a dog than see it hit by a car in front of the house and have my children see it.

I am sorry, and I will probably will not be popular here, but come on folks how can you think its ok to administer an electrical shock to an animal. There are better ways and if you commit youself to be a responsible pet owner you will take the time to make sure you are treating your dog appropriatley. Electrical shock is not appropriate!!

Other who are considering this, don't forget the correction might be a single time thing. The visual cues after they receive the initial correction following training is likely enough that it will never happen again. The beep the reinforces is just a beep, no correction, nothing. Those who talk about it being irresponsible and dangerous have perhaps not been thru the training and actually felt what the correction feels like.

We have had it for about 6 years now. We have an Aussie and he is afraid of it and stays in the yard. We have a mix breed - not sure what he is and he has gotten out on several occasions. Not happy with it at this time. It is beeping and they told my dh that something needed to be replaced and it would cost alot of money. So now we have a damitalldog that won't stay in the yard and is now chained which I hate. We are on 1.34 wooded lot so not feesable to fence. Really stinks.

we had in inground fence system (not by invisible fence) and the wire kept breaking in the winter...everytime they came out to fix it, it was $50. but when it worked it did keep our aussie mix & pommey (she was the runner) in so rather than replace the inground system, we went with the petsafe wireless system. i think it's around $300. it works fine with our dogs however it sends out the signal in a circle shape(can make it smaller or larger by the dial) which is great for a big yard but tricky for us as we have a keyhole lot. it isn't perfect boundary wise but it keeps our dogs in the yard.
actually they know when they don't have their collar on and will go beyond the boundary only without the collar
BTW no i have a terrier mix that loves to chase squirrels and he won't go through the "fence". the wireless system will continue to give them a shock until they get back inside the boundary whereas some of the inground systems stop shocking once they break through.
also you can adjust the level of correction from just the bell to different levels of vibration. and for the person who said it's cruel, they have never had one clearly since we tested it on our arm and it doesn't hurt. it's not like a cattle prod!

We've had ours for 15 years or so. Works great- it is really a training technique it is not like you can install it and your dogs will just stay within the boundaries you have to train them. We cut our wire a few times over the years digging and forgetting it was there and the one time after spending a long time trying to figure out where the break was we gave up-bought new wire and it just hangs above ground in all the cedars and other trees we have surrounding the property-the only place it is buried underground is under the two driveways- we have 1 1/4 acres. No one can see it- works great and is a lot easier to find the break should one happen. So depending on your yard you don't HAVE to bury the wire.

how far above the ground is it hanging and how is it attached to the trees? we have the wireless now which works great but i don't love the boundary for our yard (circle and our yard is narrow and long) so we've been thinking about a wired system but digging it into the yard is a pain. i never thought of doing what you did!

I used to have an invisible fence wire that was stapled along the inside of a split rail fence. It worked very well. Across the driveway it was buried in a piece of PVC.

I have not read all the responses. But we had one at our old house. DH used a tool to bury the fence wire himself. When we got hit with a tornado, we could not find the break in the wire, but it did not matter, we had no power for about 4 days. But our dog never went out of the known fenced area.

We moved to a rental house, that was not fenced in. So we invested in a wireless electric fence. Havahart or havaheart, is where I got it. It was the kind you can have any shape. DH just walked where he wanted the fence, with the controller. Then went back and did flags. The only problem is with this fence, the battery on the collar does not last and needs to be changed daily. We live in a very rural wooded area, so I think it is also a signal issue. However, the dog does not breach the fence, at least not yet. With the buried wire, the battery was charged 2x in 2 yrs, so it lasted a long time.

Havahart, also replaced our collar for nothing, because ours stopped working. It was only 4 months old.

I love the customer service. The cost was about $800, included the collar (the one I had to return), but we got another one. It is portable. We moved from the rental to our new permanent home and it was easy to redo it.

We have a Great Dane by the way.
