Our big family trip that has been on and off three times is now on again. Since it has been cancelled so often, I didn't bank the needed points.

Does anyone know how far out the release rooms to CRO. (I thought of renting extra points but if I have a room bill, than everyone will more easily give $$$).

TIA
Sandy

I've always heard that 60 days out, CRO / WDTC can book any unreserved room for cash.

But that doesn't negate the ability of DVC members to reserve vacant rooms for points. If there's a room available, you should be able to get it.

Not sure that is true. Today, I booked a VB Ocean Inn room for 27-May. I had hoped to get a cash ressie for the 28th. Member Services told me that the only room available for points or cash on the 28th was a one bedroom. No studio's, no Garden Inn or Gardens were available!

Got off the phone with Member Services and called CRO. They did have a Garden Inn available on the 28th (for $275 -- w/ tax).

Thus, MS is telling me no way - CRO is telling me it is possible.

Not sure how it all works. Maybe CRO is selling based off of a possible cancellation. And, if I arrived and my Garden Inn room was not available they upgrade me?

Unrented points rooms can go to CRO at 60 days to rent with the income going back to the members as breakage income on the annual dues statement. I don't think it works the other way around. Unrented CRO non-points rooms cannot be booked for points by members. Sometimes MS can get creative and move available rooms around.

There are cash rooms that go to CRO well in advance. These points come from exchanges (DCL, DC, CC) or points owned by DVD. in addition, non booked points rooms can be given to CRO at 60 days. I don't know if they give them all or they hold any back. It's also possible to convert some of these nonbooked points rooms from cash back to points but must be done individually. As for cash, the only rooms MS has access to for cash are rooms given up by members for exchanges and rooms not booked at 60 days out and obviously not given to CRO. While the situations may include the same type of rooms, there's no cross reference between CRO and MS for these cash rooms.

I thought I had found my plan B. There was a ressie on the rent/trade board going for under $7 a point. When I asked if it could be transferred to my account (I would than have the extra needed points). The reponse was if I use the ressie with the renter retaining control, it is under $7 per point....if it want it transferred it is $12 per point.

Does anyone else think there is something fishy here?

Hmmmm.

Well, I know the big drawback to transferring points is that you can only transfer in OR out in a single year. So, the owner of the ressie would be forfeiting some flexibility in making the transfer.

But, I don't understand why the points would be priced so low to begin with. Is it under 30 days such that the member either trades the reservation as-is or virtually loses the points?

If you aren't within 30 days, then it really makes no sense. Why take under $7 per point when people can easily get $10 or more.

Ask some questions and proceed with caution. :)

Honestly, I am to afraid to proceed with this one and wanted to post as a heads up to others.

It isn't within 30 days. I have sometimes seen legit points sell low as the renter wants to be done, etc. I also understand the "forfeit of rights" but not to the tone of over $800.

Thanks for listening

There are legit reasons why a person may ask less for points that could not be transferred. Things that come to mind include that the points may be transferred, that it may be an II exchange or the the points may be banked or borrowed and will expire relatively soon. It is very appropriate for points that will expire relatively soon to be priced less. If the points work out so you could use them, you may want to consider them. A rental of this type comes down to how much you trust the renter.
