Internet Cafe - GoToMyPC?

I'm just wondering if anyone has successfully used GoToMyPC from the Internet terminals on the Disney ships. From several posts here, I've discovered that I won't be able to use my laptop while on board the Disney ships. Regrettably, I'll need to work for a few days while on the ship next week, and need the software that's installed on my laptop to connect to my office network. A standard browser won't work, but I could setup something using GoToMyPC (which usually, but not always, works from Internet cafes).

If GoToMyPC won't work, I may need to stay home while my family goes on the cruise without me! :(

Thanks!

Here's where wireless modems and cell phones would really come in handy, huh!

I was just looking at that site you mention, I have never heard of this, but it looks great! You need to find out what type of setup they have on the ship in the Internet Cafe - as long as it fits these specifications, you should be fine:

For the client computer (the one that you will use to access the host computer):
• Required: Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT 4.0, XP, Server 2003 or any operating system that has a Java-enabled browser
• Required: Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator 4.0 or later with all Java components enabled
• Recommended: Stable Internet connection with cable modem, ISDN, DSL or better

I can't imagine that a ship that has satellite internet would have old clunker type machines that can't do this - IE 4.0 and Netscape 4.0 are WAY old technology so I'd guess this would work...anyone who has used the computers remember what they are running?

I'm hoping the same thing too. Another poster said gotomypc does work :Pinkbounc ....

Not cruising until July, so can't confirm until then ...

If you do a search for gotomypc maybe you can find the thread.

Excellent! That's exactly what I wanted to hear! Unfortunately, search has been turned off all day, so I've been unable to search for the thread. Hopefully, It'll be back on sometime today.

I'm not familiar enough with the Internet Cafe set up or GoToMyPC to be of too much help, but here are at least two other questions you may want to look into.

1) If the satellite system is similar to what is offered by DirecTV, you can get a good download speed, but will have a pretty restricted upload speed. If you need a fast upload to make the connection work or to handle the kind of work you do, this could be a problem.

2) If latency (not the speed of the connection, but the actual time it takes a packet of information to make the trip) is important, you'll have a problem no matter what kind of satellite system is in use. There's just no way to get those packets all the way up into orbit and back down again quickly.

Good luck!

Gotomypc works just fine. I've used it on multiple cruises. The uplink speed is just fine. There is some latency, but it is acceptable, still much much faster than dialup in a hotel. Of course, get the unlimited internet package if you are going to do this. It is about $90 for the 7 day cruise. Good luck.

It sounds like I have nothing to worry about, which is great. I've been looking forward to my trip, and didn't want to have to miss it.

Had dinner at Grill's tonight, and watched the Sovereign of the Seas depart. I can't wait to see the Magic!

I'm using a cell phone connection right now, as a matter of fact. If only cell phones worked when away from land, I'd be all set! :)
