I would love to see Disney invest in something like this as a long-term transportation solution within WDW:

I don't think I would want them to get rid of the boat transportation, 'cuz I love boat rides! But I would love to see this replace the bus transit and perhaps the parking lot trams. I would love to not have to wait for 20+ minutes for a bus from SSR to MK. :)

Does anyone know what types of transportation options Disney has explored for within WDW?

That's called PRT, for Personal Rapid Transit. I don't think it could replace the buses at RD & closing, but I would also love to see it. I think a good pilot project would be to replace the internal shuttle at a large resort (e.g. CBR or PO), and connect that resort to 1 or 2 nearby parks. Most people don't realize how physically close CBR is to DHS, and PO to Epcot, as the crow flies.

Unfortunately, no one has yet tested the technology on a large scale. The few PRT systems that are in public operation are shuttle operations with 2 or 3 stops. The most complex is the London Heathrow Pods, with 3 stations in a "T" configuration. (Here's a nice video of the PODs in action.)

I think if Walt were alive, he would be all over this, but current Disney management is unlikely to accept the expense and the risk of being the 1st large-scale implementation.
