August 31, 2005… Airlines and oil companies are working on plans to supply jet fuel to at least ten U.S. airports that could be shut down due to a lack of jet fuel caused by refinery and pipeline shutdowns from hurricane Katrina. The airports in most jeopardy for closure include Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Orlando, Tampa, Washington Dulles and West Palm Beach.

.......

You know ths "drudgereport" is one of the ghins that started the "gas shortage" panic yesterday... Now this. Personally I am starting to think that they are enjoying a PANIC first attack.

One reason I am suspious of this is that last night on the news Delta was quoted as saying one of the airports they were NOT worried about was Atlanta since they have a tank farm there that is in good shape. They were more concerned about other airports where they do not really have a good way of knowing what the gas situation is.

Matt Drudge is best viewed as strictly entertainment. He literally personifies the sensationalist "news" source.

The link from the Drudgereport is to a industry site, which is pretty similar to the USA Today article that ran today. Durdge links to news media sites.

The pipeline is back online and exceeding expectations. Currently running at 38% and will be at 61% by the end of the day. I think email is to blame for much of this panic, due to rumors of shortages and things like that. Of course stations will run out if everyone buys at once and also fill up containers with gas...that will happen anytime. It seems that we believe everything we read in our emails and it starts a panic over just about anything. I even read that the Supderdome had exploded...gimme a break people

No it's NOT the same as the USAToday ariticle. NOWHERE does the USAToday article indicate that airports might be shut down..

This is not journalism...

No the USA Today article simple states that they might run out of fuel. I guess I most people would assume without fuel that would put a damper on planes flying, but I'm no aeronatuical engineer.

Just MHO, but as far as I can tell, it's just another example of a self-fulfilling prophecy and media-created panic & frenzy. I wish people would learn to be more skeptical of the "news."

Totally agree Barb. There is a great book on this occurence called "Manias, Panics and Crashes," by Charles Kindleberger that outlines how this mentality has plagued mankind for millenia. Even if one is not "into" finance or econmics, it is a good read. People were crazy about tulips back in the day!

Well, the USAToday article indicates that they "might" run out of fuel for SOME flights ... it also indicates that the airlines are doing things like flying with extra fuel... Drudge leads with "airports closes" That's just rumor mongering and it's things like that they lead to the "gas shortage" yesterday....

Carol,
I understand you frustration with what you read, but placing blame on anyone who provides a link to a story is kind of silly. The article you disliked was from a AIRPORT industry site. If you disagreed with what was presented doen't make more sense to be upset with who wrote the article. What you are doing is analgous to being mad at the guy who runs a newstand for a story in a magazine that he didn't write. Not trying to start a debate :flower3: , this is a Disney site afterall!

I don't blame the person who placed the link... I blame the folks who published.. They should have SOME sense of responsibilty....

IF you read my posts I have never said anything directly bad about anyone posting on this thread... just the article content...IF they want to publish what I think is junke then I get to comment.. LOL!

I don't suppose this makes any difference, but I read that industry news article yesterday (after the link was posted on one of these boards!)...Drudge only picked up the story today. And that website is updated substantially from yesterday -- yesterday it definitely said 10 airports, including Atlanta, Orlando and Washington Dulles, were in danger of having to close.

Its been said before, and Ill say it again...

The media runs this country!

Can't anyone remember the supposed "blackout" that was going to wipe out the computer systems on New Years 2000? Its all hype guys! How gulable are you? I also agree with CarolA, don't blame the op, blame the stupid press that comes out with the outlandish claims. How can a 2 day shutdown on an oil pipeline cause mass chaos at many of this nations airports?

Jesse....

I never insinuated that you were talking abou the the OP. I am not refering to the OP, I am refering to Drudge. He did not write any articles, he did not publish these articles, he simply linked to an already published article. Rarely does he do any actual reporting, his site is primarily links to news outlets.

I stand by my statement. Drudge is a fine example of yellow journalism at its finest. He carefully selects 'sources', choosing the outliers for any story. He then wraps them with the most sensationalistic leads/"analysis" that he can. All in the name of driving more hits to his site and attention to himself.

True, every once in a while he actually finds a good story doing this. But, you know the one about blind squirrels and nuts.

My DH works in with an airline and the planes that fly out west are carrying extra gas to the airports that are hurting.

West of Tallahassee is having a gas shortage. I live in Pensacola and it is extremly hard to find gas. Right now, we don't have any gas, but we are suppose to get some today or tomorrow. The reason for our shortage is AL, MS and LA are coming here looking for gas. The county is asking people to work 4 ten hour shifts, try to work at home and limit driving. The shortage should only be for three weeks and then things will get back to normal. Well, as long as we don't have a hurricane.

Also keep in mind, if the airline flights are not at capacity, a gas shortage is a sufficient reason to cancel a flight!! Either way with soaring fuel prices the airline industry will take a huge hit...
