Just returned from a wonderful week at SSR. I am continually impressed with this resort. It truly is maturing well. It was completely sold out and you would never known it. Pool was not crowded even though it was in the 80's. Food was great at the Artist Pallet. Very quiet and peaceful. I also liked the advantage of downtown Disney PLUS the direct transportation to any other WDW resort (no bus changes).

Ok, now on to the interesting stuff. Got the chance to catch up with my "friend". She has been very reliable (but not 100%) in the past. What I was able to gather from her:

o DVC at the Contemporary is definately dead. She reiterated to me what she said last month...financials didn't come through plus the Resorts side of the house just isn't interested in giving up the space. I asked her about the picture we all saw on the internet. Again, she said it was just one of over 30 designs DVC has commissioned for various sites. She also indicated that the structure was too big for the soil to handle (could sink) unless there were substantial shoring up the land ($$$). As a side observation, I noticed that they were bringing in truck loads of what appeared to be dry wall. So maybe they are finished with the removal of asbestos and getting ready to completed the refurbishment? I am not much of a construction expert, so couldn't confirm.

o AKL...nothing new to add what you all have already known about. Yes, it will be a separate standing set of buildings not connected to the lodge. It will have its own pool, restaurants, etc. They don't want to overload the lodge facilities. Not sure about pool hopping yet (if it will be allowed). Points will be higher. Maintenance will be higher.

o STOL...now this one was interesting. She clammed up on me. If you looked at the activities at the STOL it is clearly much more than simple ground prep for construction trailers. They are laying in basic utilities. She and I "speculated" together. Disney is seeing growth in attendance (faster than projected). Deluxe resorts are filling. Resorts would like to see an EPCOT monorail resort. DVC would love a Monorail resort....speculation...next resort is a combined resort (main lodge) and DVC (Condo style) resort.

Well, that is basically all I got out of her. So, is she right? Time will tell :)

What does STOL stand for? I have seen it on the rumor boards, but am not sure where it exactly is.

The STOL (short take off and landings) is the air strip used by Walt and his crew when WDW was in the planning stages. It is located roughly to the East of the road going to the Contemporary Resort, adjacent to the Epcot monorail line, and to the North of the road to Fort Wilderness.

The STOL has been used over the years for bus driver training and a staging area for special events. You can see it from the buses as you travel to/from the MK.

Recently there has been some construction going on, it appears to be basic utility work in preparation for a larger project. What that project is, is unknown at this time. It could be a basic support structure for WDW itself, or it could be a new resort. A monorail station could easily be added there without having to do major construction to the monorail line itself.

And if they are not constructing a CR DVC then why would they be doing all that work on the STOL site?? The rehab on the north wing wouldn't need that much suport.

I know Disney likes to keep us guessing but have they ever kept the secret even after construction has begun like this?

I just returned from Disney today. Yesterday I drove down STOL. IMHO the activity is very minor. 3-4 tailor trucks and some minor construction equipment that looked like it was for paving. Nothing to get excited about. I know I read the post about it becoming a staging area for DVC Contemporary.

Nothing major going on at the Contemporary. Lots of fences with little activity.

Talked to several CM's, most agreed DVC Contemporary will happen sometime.

As best as I could gather, most CM's seemed really hyped at massive DVC growth. I heard numbers like 5x as large in 15 years (which seems unrealistic). The guy I was chating with was like: "Colorado, California, Hawai, Contemporary...will all happen over the next few years" He kept saying "you bought in at the right time, this thing will grow"

Again I will agree with Nuts, everything I have been told and shared here, is DVC at the Contemporary is off the screen. That does not mean in 5, 10 years that it won't come back. But they are rehabbing the North Wing, removing asbestos as I said and not building a DVC there.

As to the STOL, if I was guessing I would say they are laying the ground work for a future resort which at this point has yet to be determined. As to whether it will be Disney, or DVC, or a combo of both, only time will tell.

When AKL was built the ground work was laid for DVC, so it is very possible this is what is going on there.

As to the reliability of my sources, I said for almost a year they would change the DDP to seperate the adult/child credits and they did. ;)

Well, that is where she clammed up. Rumor is that this is site prep for a future resort/DVC (drainage work, sewer, water, etc).

Ouch, this was an area I meant to ask her and forgot! Last conversation I had with her on this subject was about a year ago. She was pretty confident on Hawaii and Colorado. However, she did say at that time that all this was in discussion phase. They want to learn from Vero and Hilton Head. Possibly build a downtown disney concept with DVC to attract folks. Lots of discussion.

Disney, here's a hint.

Folks will WANT the Hawaii resort to be ON a beach! (Don't try another HH there!)

I agree 100%. Hawaii is a beach destination, if they want it to sell, unlike HH, it needs to be on the beach and a good one at that.

Hawai is the one place I'd actually addd points if it is done right.

A beach location hotel anywhere needs to be on the beach, not a bus ride away.

I had the same thought when the picture of the proposed DVC for the Contemporary popped up-wow, that thing's gonna be sitting on some very soggy, boggy ground, that's going to take *work* to get that thing not to do a leaning tower of Pisa on Disney...

Ooooh, Hawaii, that'd be nice. Except I can't drive there...

I can agree with on the beach. This leads to the lovely argument of wich island should it be on?

thanks

HH is on the marsh, with beach access; but you can't walk there, so you have to use transportation.

HH has a beach house 1.3 miles from the resort it is a nice bike ride about 10 minutes or about the same by the free shuttle or you can drive the beach house has a pool, bar, restaraunt, and activities

Yes, VB is the clear winner in my eyes and not just because it is on the beach.

I pick resorts based on what is the best or near the best at that particular destination. In VB Disney's VB is the best resort there.

In HH Disney's VB isn't even close.

If on site DVC's don't improve they will likely stop being the best in Orlando for WDW trips soon enough and I'll decide to stay elsehwere. Simple as that.
