"Interesting" gift from my MIL...

I am cracking up here.

My MIL gives some odd gifts, but none as good as these. One year she gave DH a heavy duty, orange extension cord. We don't know why but we jokle about it.

My sister is the queen of bad gifts, but she is the most loving kind person you'll ever meet so I just gush over the gifts and remember that it's the love that comes with it that is the true gift. My MIL in the past always made really bad homemade gifts for the whole family...example- dd's got jewerly trays made out of USED frozen dinner trays with really gaudy ribbon hot glued to the edges.
I got a toilet brush one year for Christmas that was decorated with ribbon and shiny beads hot glued to it She was so proud of all these!!
However, after FIL died, we told her we would like copies of different old photos of family members (we are big into old family photos and geneology) so every birthday or Christmas now she sends each of us one old photo, usually themed to the occasion.
We love getting cards from her now, and it doesn't cost her much at all.

My grandmother gave MANY bad gifts but my favorite was the year all of us opened up deodorant! Of course, after we all opened it, she told us that we should never give deodorant to anyone but family members! (Thanks for the hint Grandma!)

Sounds like your MIL has a good heart, and that is the most important thingie.
