Insurance or not?

Does everyone purchase the flight insurance? I just booked Air Tran and have a day or two to decide if I want the insurance. If there was an emergency, can your flight be credited for rebooking or should I purchase the insurance? Also, does it just cover flight expense or the entire trip? When I was insured through NWA, it was trip insurance. Thanks for your help!

You would have to read the information provided to see what the policy covers. My understanding of 'flight insurance' is, well, that it's a very short-term life insurance coverage.

Trip insurance is different - its coverage depends again on what the policy states. Although I can't see that if someone bought trip insurance from an airline for a flight, that it would include ANY other coverage.

If you really feel the need for insurance, try insuremytrip.com - it shows various companies' available policies, and provides links.

THAT SAID - Consumer Reports recommends NOT purchasing trip insurance. It was in an article last year, I'd say between June and October, but you'd have to hit the library to see for sure.

I have had chances to buy trip insurance four times in the past seven years, but turned it down. I thinik the total, for the four trips, was about $1000.00 premium. I saved that money and used it on something else. The cruise insurance is especially high.

This was $75 and says it covers the tickets in case of sickness, accidents, etc. Would Air Tran give us a credit if we had to cancel? I've never purchased insurance before but as my parents age, I think about it more and more.

$75 per person? For the airfare? Again, you would need to check the terms of the policy, but that's more than the airline would charge if you canceled a ticket.
