Hi everyone!

I know a lot of people ask this, but I'm a little confused about whether or not I have to buy insurance coverage through whatever rental car company I use (so far, I've only used Alamo when going to Disney) or if my car insurance covers rentals?

Is that pretty standard, that the car insurance you already have covers any cars you rent, or is that something you add on? If you do have to add it on, does anyone know how much that would cost? I was pricing cars for my October trip, and with the most basic coverage added on through Alamo, it added an extra $120, making the rental for a week over $400, which is crazy to me!

Thanks in advance! :goodvibes

It varies by policy. Contact your insurance company to check.

You do not have to buy insurance through your car rental company.

Some auto policies cover rental cars; some don't. You really just need to read your policy or check with your agent.

In addition, many credit cards provide insurance coverage when you use the card to pay for the rental. If your own insurance also provides coverage the card's coverage is secondary insurance. Again, you'll need to check to see what your card offers.

You are correct that in many cases the cost of the loss damage waiver (not really insurance per se) offered by the rental car companies can be close to the cost of renting the car to begin with.

I did just what the PPs suggested. Our insurance is throught State Farm. I stopped in the office and asked my agent. Our policy covers rental cars, we would just have to pay our normal deductable. I would definitely check your policy before you spend the extra money.
