I really haven't got a clue!!

I have always called large roads highways!!

Can someone elighten me?

Thanks

just a local thing. When I lived on the east coast, they were called highways or interstates, but out here they call them freeways. Of course it could have something to do with toll roads, but I am not sure.

Hiways are roads that go long distances, freeways usually connect into highways. I guess they got their names because most of the highways were toll roads at one time and the freeways were free until they connected into the highways. (Info provided by DH)

the defination states that Freeways have "full control access".......does that mean that people could ride bikes, horses etc. on those roads and not on highways which is vehicular access???

Learn something new everyday. Thanks for the link Dan.

A freeway is one with on/off ramps.
A highway has cross roads.

At least that's how I preceive it.
I live by a highway......people have houses by the road and Hwy*** is their street address.
The freeway near here is an interstate.
