Inspired by DISboard pet peeves...Shopping Pet Peeves

it's not like i enjoy having to ask every single person if they want to buy our discount card, but if I don't ask AND mention at least least one benefit and you happen to be the secret shopper then I get chewed out for failing the customer service shop. if you guys have a problem with these sales tactics then complain. but not to the cashier, and not to the store manager, they're just doing what they're told by the higherups.

So ask! What's totally unnecessary is treating people like total scum when they say no or get uncomfortable about it. (not saying you do this, but I'd be willing to bet that's what gets people riled up about it)

This is one of my PP. Everytime I go to Target they ask if I would like to save 10% today. I understand that they have to ask, but when it goes beyond asking and they start telling me why I should get the card after I have already said no, then I get annoyed. I have gotten so sick of this that I just say no I like overspending!

Kohl's does this as well. Even after you say no thank you they keep trying to talk you into getting a Kohl's card. It's like you have to come up with 50 reasons why you don't want one. It's REALLY annoying, and they do it every single time you go to check out.

a view from the other side of the counter: people who do that drive me nuts.I understand that your hands are full, but I'm getting glared at by the 10 people in line behind you. I wish people would just move over to the side to get organized, write down how much they spent, get their sunglasses out, find the keys etc etc.

.
I have a better solution:

Why doesn't the store utilize more of thier cash registers. A lot of grocery stores have up to 20 cash registers, but only two cashier working on any given day. Even on the busiest of holidays they don't even utilize half of the registers.

This is the one I was going to say. I would also like to add those parents that grab a box of cookies or crackers, and crack it open right there and give some to little junior.

I mean seriously, if Jr needs something to nibble on, bring it with you!

Wait until you've actually paid for your item before you start to consume it!

Well, I'm guilty! But in my defense, we're usually out of those teddy grahams, which is why we're at the store! :teeth:

A parent has to do what a parent has to do! :rotfl:

Your DD is so cute...my own Alyssa is a freshman in college now. Geez, how fast the teddy graham years pass! :)

I haven't read all, but I read enough.

I *know* this is the thread to list and discuss pet peeves, but seriously maybe we all just really need to chill a bit. Especially with the super busy/stressful holiday shopping season fast approaching.

I mean seriously so you wait another 5 seconds while the cart in front of you is stopped for a sec to grab the cheerios, is that gonna really ruin your day? Perhaps you are wound just a bit tight.

Maybe momma lives out of town and comes shopping once a week and needs to hit 6 places and the last is the grocery so her stuff will stay a least a bit cool on the way home, if junior needs a little snack to get through, how is that hurting you, they aren't wiping it on your stuff, they pay for it in the end and momma and junior have a much better day, smile and enjoy a happy child.

maybe the person who has to stop and check over the receipt got over charged last week. You just can't know or guess at everyone elses circumstances or get so upset about what you think is going on.

I really don't think that people set off to be rude and unkind, but it sure seems like so many are so caught up in themselves that any little inconvience to their day is a major insult. Smile and pay it forward, who knows what may change.

If it hasnt been said before people that wait til the purchase is rung up to write a check.

Personally I do not think that people are "wound just a bit tight" just because they don't appreciate rude or inconsiderate people. If everyone were so carefree as to have no concern for anyone else then this world would be crazy.

Most people do not mind waiting "5 seconds" for someone to get thier Cheerios" before they move thier cart. It's the people who linger for a while. Or, who just park thier cart in the way and chat on thier cell phone (with no consideration for anyone else who may need to get something they are blocking). Or, who park thier cart, then walk up and down the isle to look at, or get everything they need in that isle. Things like that.

As for opening food and eating it before it's paid for, I don't think it's right. If it's not paid for YET then it's not yours to open.

PS: I don't let any of the pet peeves I mentioned "ruin my day". It's just things that annoy us, and that is what this thread is about.

Another pet peeve: people who tear off all the coupons that are attached to products....products that they are not buying. Or, emptying the Blimpy machine of all the coupons. Save some for everyone else.

Hopefully you don't call them #1 and #2. If so that could be why you've gotten the dirty looks. ;) :teeth:

Nope....(well maybe in my head, but never out loud! :teeth: ) the good part is if they want to complain to someone, I am one of the ones they get to complain to!

Well I hate the way I'm treated in stores because I look about 10 years younger than I am, so I look like someone in there early teens.

I recently asked the lady at the cash register if I could quickly grab some gum (there was no one in line behind me) and she said 'look, I haven't got time for this little girl, stop messing around, I'm a busy woman'.

Needless to say I complained to the manager and was given a complimentary box of chocolates.

I hope the assistant was sufficiently embarrassed to know the 'kid' she'd just insulted was probably older than her!

On the same note, I get followed round stores by security guys who assume I can't afford to shop there, ignored when I ask for assistants and patronised if I try to by make-up  A lady in a cosmetic store recently told me 'oh darling you don't need make-up at your age, wait till you're a bit older ok?' HAHAAAAHHAAAAAAA.....!!!!! Again I was probably older than her

Simple reason. Payroll. Stores have a limited budget of hours they can schedule employees at each week. Rarely have I ever seen a store say they have received extra payroll hours in their budget, more likely the case is they have been cut. The desire of getting products as cheaply as possible has caused a severe shortage in customer service. Not that its not human nature to want to get something for the best price available, but it has become an obsession. Stores like Walmart are driving other stores out of existance.

Where my DW works - she has worked for Hallmark for the past 20+ years. Back in 1995, her budgeted payroll for an average week was 320 hrs, not including her hours since she is salary. Know what it is now? 180 hours, INCLUDING her 45 hours. Given the amount of hours the store is open, it barely allows 2 people working together. Even with one of the biggest events - their annual "Open House" - they still gave her the usual 180 hours. Of course they expect her to quadruple her sales that day, just on the same amount of staff they have working on a non holiday time. That is why there is not a second or third cashier to open another register when the line gets past 3 people long. Not because the store was negligent in scheduling or managing their staff, but because the companies have to cut back so far on payroll that they have no other choice. And unfortunately, when a company has to "cut the fat" to keep up with the Walmarts and the Dollar Stores, payroll is the quickest and easiest and for the people in the corporate office, the most painless, cut to take. (never their 6 and 7 figure bonuses) As far as I can see, it's never going to get better.

I successfully avoid the natural nails, security system, survey takers, and cell phone providers by walking purposefully, keeping my eyes straight ahead, and pretend not to hear them when they talk to me.

I use the "Oh, no thank you - I already bought some and I just LOVE it!"

Okay yeah - it isn't true - but it works for me. :rolleyes1

I think everyone has already stated all my peeves - so by the time I reached the end of the thread - I felt cleansed!!

As the OP I should chime it. Since you didn't read through all the replies, you don't know that it has been said (by me, if not other people also) that many if not most of these pet peeves wouldn't be a big deal at all if we all used common courtesy when shopping. We all do things that could be someone elses pet peeve (or even our own pet peeve) and a quick, sincere "sorry" or "excuse me" can very often make all the difference.

Yes, maybe someone was overcharged the week before, but they don't need to block everyone while they check it over, especially if that cashier wouldn't be the person to issue the refund (ie, at our grocery store customer service takes care of that sort of thing). I do try to pay attention when items are being rung up so I can catch any mistakes then and there.

And of course a person needs to pick out their Cheerios, but it doesn't mean that they have to block everyone around while they do so. I went to buy potatoes a couple days ago. They were on an endcap and there was a lady picking out some, with her cart next to her blocking the whole potato display. My DH was with me and could watch my purse while I wedged myself into the area between her cart and the potatoes. I grabbed a few and was off--I didn't say anything to her, didn't shoot her any looks (and forgot about it until now, as a matter of fact). If I hadn't been able to get to what I needed to get to I would have simply said excuse me.

I agree that a person should go out of their way to smile and be nice to others. I'm the first to hold a door open, let someone else go first, etc.

Actually, knowing what pet peeves others has serves 3 purposes that you didn't mention--I've gotten a good laugh out of realizing that others have different pet peeves and we all go through this in one way or another. Doesn't matter where we live and what our situation is.

Also, maybe something I do could be considered a pet peeve to someone else and I should keep that in mind when I'm out and about.

The other is that maybe someone else has a reason for doing what is a pet peeve of mine. Someone might be irritated that someone opens up boxes of food to give to their child, but maybe when that mom of a young chld explains that they forgot their diaper bag, were doing more errands than normal and ran out, etc, we can understand that it was in everyones best interests for her to carefully open a box of food that she is going to pay for.

If reading this somehow goes against your grain, that is fine--you don't have to read or reply. There are MANY things on the DIS that I don't read and respond to. Maybe read the "sister" thread about DISboard pet peeves. ;)

Thanks! I bet your Alyssa still likes teddy grahams (I know I do! :teeth: ). You can put them in her first exam care package! :)

Threads like this really interest me, because I realize sometimes I'm guilty of unintentionally "peeving" someone. Although I'm still going to open a box of teddy grahams if I don't have any snacks for my screaming toddler, I will try to be more conscious of some of the other "peeves" that have been mentioned.

Hmm, I'm trying to remember if my Alyssa still likes Teddy Grahams. I know she loves chocolate cream Oreos and have sent some of those to her. In our house, with three hungry boys, a box of Teddy Grahams last a few minutes, if that.
