Since this is what I thought Charade meant when I read the title. :teeth:
If John Jones and Sally Smith marry and they name their kid Samantha Smith-Jones and then Samantha marries Sven Johnson-Lundstrom, do they name their kid Suri Smith-Jones-Johnson-Lundstrom?

Gosh I hope not.

What's even more controversial, though, is which name(s) get retained in that case?

My vote would be that the children retain the maternal/maternal name, and the paternal/paternal name (and the maternal/paternal name, and the paternal/maternal name both get dropped).

So in your scenario, the child would be Suri Smith-Lundstrom.

We some friends where the wife did do the hyphen thing with her last name. To make matters worse they have given the children the same long last name.

I'm not a fan. Keep the old name or take the new.

I've never known any couples who both have hyphened last names. It would be interesting to see what they do about it. I would think maybe when it gets to the hyphen it's time to combine the names in some way...or come up with an entirely new name. I guess if people were concerned with the name going on this wouldn't be a good option though.

My gf and I have discussed the possibility of children and have agreed on hyphenation for last names. I suggested combining both of our last names in some way, but they don't combine to make a very good sounding name. Since we were thinking about 2 children we could give one my last name and one her last name or give both of them an entirely new last name, but that might make life more difficult regarding school and such things if the kids have different names than each other and/or than both their parents. Other than that I guess we could flip a coin to see which last name the kids get, but there really isn't any other good way to decide (at least we haven't found one).

I'm thinking as more and more women refuse to give up their last names and more and more same-sex couples have children (a situation in which sexist tradition can't help determine which person's name the kids get) some type of custom will eventually develop. Of course, it's going to take awhile for that to happen--I'm sure I won't be around to see it.

If I ever have any children, the first thing I will do (am actually thinking of doing it any way) is to change my last name from my father's name to my mother's maiden name.
