I'm not even sure if this is possible, but it was mentioned on the "cell phones on rides" thread so I thought I'd do a poll to see what everyone else thinks..

If it could be done, would you be in favor of Disney installing some kind of filter that would prevent cell phones from working during rides and shows?

I vote yes - even though I realize it will probably never happen.. :flower:

*****Edited to add that the signal would automatically roll over to voicemail so you would know where the call came from once you exited the ride or show.. *******

I vote yes, for cell blocking on rides, but not park wide, if there is an emergency I want to be able to make/receive calls.

No - not park wide - but during shows such as "Lion King"; indoor shows; and things of that nature..

No. I do like it when people use them on rides, but do not block the signal. Then my husband will not know if he received a call. He is on call for his job 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, vacation or not. He always has his set on silent and then calls back when we have a few minutes down time.

Unfortunately, Disney has the same problem that the rest of the country/world has, inconsiderate people who do not follow rules.

I voted No. While I see how things can be disruptive with other riders, I want to know if a call comes through. Now, let me say that we are not ones to have a phone on, during our park visits. However, my mom is having health issues and I would just like to know if they were to call. I wouldn't take the call unless I could get up and walk out but I want to have the knowlege. I'd prefer people to have better phone etiquette...that's not going to happen either.

Yes, nothing is so urgent that it can't wait 5 minutes or so. I know in places where they do block the signal the call automatically goes to voicemail, so you will know that someone called and what the message is.

Thanks for clarifying that it might be possible for the call to automatically go to voicemail - otherwise I would have to disagree with myself... :rotfl:

Let me edit my original post..

:sad2: what did people do before cell phones?

I vote no. I just see that as a bit silly and extreme. Maybe I am lucky b/c I have never had an issue with people using their cell phones on rides.

I reluctantly voted no. While personally I think that cell phones are a blight on society, they do serve a purpose. While at WDW I use mine only if I have lost track of a member of my group.

Dh is very dependent upon his for work, but when we are on vacation he leaves it in the room. He checks it daily for messages and returns calls if necessary before or after we go to the parks. He feels that our "regular" lives are hectic enough and the world will not stop spinning if he is not immediately reachable for a few hours at a time.

I feel sorry for those who have a phone pinned to their ear, sadly they are missing their own vacation.

I remember a few years back while on the animation tour, the part where the group gathers around the animator and he shows you how his job is done and lets you ask questions.......someone in the group cell phone rings, they answer and proceed to have a rather long conversation, passing the phone to family members so they can talk too, all while the animator is trying to make his presentation.

The problem is more about common courtesy and manners. I have heard them ring on rides, during shows, on the bus and in restaurants just to name a few places. When did we all get so important that we needed to be reachable every minute of every day?

Maybe Disney should let the CM's carry their cell phones and take calls when they are checking us in or getting us our meals or loading us onto rides. I bet there would be a rather long thread on that topic :earseek:

Ditto.

A man sitting next to us during the Orleans concert at the American Gardens Theatre, in the first row. Was talking very loudly during this concert asking the caller "Do you hear them? I've been here twice, won't be here tomorrow" .

If you don't want anyone listening to your business, don't scream into your cellphone expecting others to be deaf to your conversation. I suspect a very small fraction of these calls are life and death situations.

Oh - for sure! Patrons would be absolutely outraged by how "inconsiderate" the CM's were being.. :earseek:

Up until 4 years ago when the company went to the cell phone, my husband had a pager and had to return the call within 5 minutes or get a second page. This is why he never went on vacation. Yes, he has a job that he is the only one who does what he does and when the system is down, it costs the company lots of money. Now, would I like to company to cross train someone else, you bet! But I am not in charge and for the other 350 days out of the year, we have learned to live with it.

I voted No for a couple of reasons.

One, such a device is illegal - the FCC has jurisdiction over this, not Disney, and the FCC has decreed that they are illegal.

Two, I think people should use better judgement on their own.

I voted no because I think people should turn their phones on "silent" during rides and shows, but still be able to see if a call comes in, so they can call them back. (Babysitter, business calls, etc.) :earsboy:

I voted no too. While I think it is ridiculous for people to talk on cell phones during rides and shows, I know my DH has to have his on 24/7 for work. He, like an above poster said, is the only one who does his job at his company. He is an aircraft mechanic for a charter service and if a pilot has to have him, they have to be able to speak with him on the phone. He does turn it on vibrate mode where it doesn't make a noise and if he recieves a call during a ride or show, he promptly leaves the show and returns the call or waits until the ride is over. Now, I don't know how to deal with inconsiderate people who refuse to turn their ringers off, but I can't see punishing everyone. Maybe they could start asking people who talk on their cell phones during shows to politely leave if they must have a conversation. I know, that would take a lot more cast members though...

Yes put up a filter so cell phones don't work in rides-outside I don't care as much but after waiting in line forever I don't want the ride ruined by someone taking a call! :)

I also voted yes. I know many people are respectful and they nicely wait until the end of the ride or show to return the call. If that is the case, what is the difference in knowing during the ride or at the end of the ride that a call has been received? You will be returning the call at the same time either way. That is, of course, assuming the system works as we think and that the phones will show that a call was missed and a vmail is waiting once you are outside. For those who say they will leave an attraction early if they feel their phone vibrate, while sometimes that may be posssible, I just don't know how feasible that would be most of the time (SM, GMR, TOT, etc?).

As to people who are the only ones who do what they do at their jobs, I understand and do feel for you. Unless you are the owner, most companies should have a second person on staff or an outside contractor who can cover for vacations. Not to be melodramatic, but what would those companies do in a crisis should the employee be seriously injured or worse? When my company downsized and I was alone on site with 100 users, 10+ servers, and a phone system, I also felt tied to my phone. However, I soon realized that if I were to remain at all sane (okay, at least partially sane), the company would have to at least find a way to let me take vacations and only return calls once or twice a day while away.

PS...I chose to leave the company eventually rather than never have a family life.

I have to say that on a few occasions, I have left myself voicemails of my ToT ride, and have called work to share the ride with co-workers...it's really one of the funniest thing you've ever heard. Keep in mind though that when I have done this, all I do is call out and just have my phone out, there's no conversation on my end, just my laughing and screaming that would happen regardless of my phone.
I do shut my ringer off on show attractions though, because nothing kills the hall of Presidents or the american adventure than a loud phone conversation.
