Inspired by Candle for grades thread--did you have an ethics class for your degree?

this crossed my mind when i read that thread too-seems like common sense for a teacher.

to answer your question-when i got a degree in early childhood education we had a ethics componants in all of the core classes. when i got my education degree and credential it was again a componant in several courses. in training for social work it was an entire subject matter.

dh is in a teaching program-it is covered within several courses.

the thing with the 'candle thread' that realy made me :scared1::dance3::scared1: was how this teacher of a high school course could justify/document these grading practices. dd's highschool has an on-line system that parents can access to check grades. anything that is graded has to have a description of the assignment/test/extra credit and then you can go and look not only at your child's but the high/low/mean scores of the entire class/. if a parent wishes they can request the rubric for how an individual assignment/test/extra credit is set up. dh is being taught that every assignment/test/extra credit has to have a rubric in place for teacher accountability, so it floors me that any teacher could get away with this kind of unethical practice.

i'm a social work major. i have to take TONS of ethics classes.

as a social work major i imagine you're being taught that not only could you not solicit items from anyone you work professionaly with, you have to refuse anything they try to gift you (this was a very difficult issue with a population i served wherein it was considered the epitome of insulting behaviour to refuse their offerings of homemade treats brought to the office).

I was an English major with a minor in secondary education (and certified to teach). No ethics class.

I did have ethic the year I attended highschool in Spain. DD is in 8th grade here in Germany and has ethics (it is the catch all class for all the kids who are not Catholic or Prodestant--those two have religious ed classes at school, yes public school, during that time). DS will also have ethics here starting in eight grade. It runs every year from grade 8 through graduation.

Here's a thought though--would the concept of NOT selling grades for Yankee candles be covered in an ethics class, or would that just be basic common sense?
Seems to me it would fall under the common sense umbrella. The whole thread reminded me of the kids who will try to weasel out of trouble by saying their parents never told them they were not allowed to _______ (insert whatever outrageous thing here that you want like jump of the roof, smash car hoods with baseball bats, eat a bag of sugar, etc.).

I'm getting a Masters in Education with a few different concentrations (all dealing with Education) and one of the classes I'm actually in right now is "Law & Ethics in Education".
