Our most recent journey takes us to the Charleston SC area. My good friend (ok, I guess one of my 2 best friends) Liz & her husband, Jonath, came in on Saturday to stay a few days, and went home Tuesday morning.
Sunday morning was a little bit of a slow start. We eventually got our collective hineys in gear & made it down to Huntington State Park to hit the sand & surf for a bit. Conner has visited the beach before, but has never felt the sand or surf, so he was really excited to try these new experiences.
I swear, every time I turned around, he would crawl off 10 feet or so, and be in the process of jamming a shell in his mouth.
On Monday, we headed to Boone Hall Plantation.
The first 3 original homes burned, and the one in the picture above was built in the 30s. Roots, North & South, & some other things have been filmed here. Its a private residence, so we were only allowed to see a few rooms on the bottom floor.
Pics from around the property:
These are just a few of the slave houses that exist on property. There would be wooden shacks out in the fields, since the slaves had to stay close to where they worked.
I love the oak alley. It just screams Ahm frum thuh Sowth, Sugah Grab a glass of sweet tea, a rockin chair, and sit a spell on the porch. Did ya see that dress Miss Betty wore to church? Bless her heart.
Run Forest, ruuun!
Boone Hall is a working farm, so we made sure we got some fresh strawberries. Conner approved!
Overall, Boone Hall was fun, but Ill choose another plantation to visit next time. Kyle said he didnt think it was worth the price of admission (about $17/person).
Next we headed into Charleston. Our plan was to go eat at Justines Kitchen (featured on both No Reservations & $40 a Day on the Food Network.) I had a massive hankerin for some fried chicken & coca-cola cake. Ill be danged if it wasnt closed! Closed on Monday! *tsk*
I texted a girlfriend of mine who went to the College of Charleston for a recommendation on where to eat. She suggested Vickerys. We headed over, and I shot some pictures as we roamed.
We all split an order of the spring rolls & loaded tater tots for our appetizer. For my entrée, I had the fried green tomato BLT & added cheese. It was all pretty good, but I cant be 100% certain on the apps cuz I had a glass of wine.
Some pics around downtown Charleston:
After dinner, it was time to head home. We had a blast! I love Charleston!
