Insane concierge prices - not worth it?

I STILL cannot get over the concierge room pricing which is often twice the inside stateroom price. I just don't think it's worth it for that price. We cruised concierge on the Disney Dream in a Family Verandah room in February 2015 (4 days Bahamas cruise). We paid a LOT for that room, and while it was pricey it was not nearly as exorbitantly priced as concierge rooms have been on opening day the last few times prices have come out. They are almost always about 50% more than we paid for the same itinerary and often hover around twice the cost of inside rooms.

There were a lot of perks to cruising concierge, but I'm just not sure these are worth the crazy prices:

1. First dibs on booking a Castaway Cay cabana. It was AMAZING but cost an extra ~$600. I know there are also excursions we could do instead on CC, and I might do that instead next time if we don't book concierge again. Excursions may be somewhat inferior experiences to lounging on that hammock and playing in the sand. But realistically for $600 you can buy an awesome hammock with a nice stand and have it at home to use for many years, rather than just a few hours for a day on a semi-secluded beach. I think you could even buy 2 hammocks for that price! Plus, I felt itchy while laying in the hammock like there were bugs or something (I think sand fleas). I googled and others have experienced this as well. It wasn't the most comfortable experience for $600. It was nice that we had a little shower that I did use and that helped a bit, but I know there are also public showers on the non-cabana part of the beach.

It was nice having chips, fresh fruit, drinks and a refrigerator but food and drinks are free on the island so we could have gotten whatever we wanted although of course there are lines to wait in (it wouldn't be Disney if there were no lines, right?!).

On CC, we had a safe which was awesome, but it broke and we had to have island security come fix it so that we could retrieve our belongings at the end of the day.

There is music in the cabana but you can hear neighbors' music since they really are on top of one another.

The biggest plus was the beach which is terrific for little kids since it's so shallow but as our kids get older they are more interested in going over to the slides. Why pay for a cabana if we are not using it the entire time?

You can snorkel for free if you have a cabana, but need to stand in line just like non-cabana guests (and they can snorkel for a fee). Bikes are free for cabana guests, but I assume you wait in line to rent one of those as well. Our kids were too small for biking so this wasn't a valuable perk for us.

While this all may sound a bit negative, we LOVED our cabana and would get one in a heartbeat. I know lots of people want to get a cabana and cannot. They are amazing but if you are cruising concierge solely to get a cabana, I'm not sure it's worth the cost.

2. We had amazing seats at Animator's Palate. My kids got to talk to Crush, but they have done this a few times at Epcot so they seemed pleased but it would not be a huge deal if we just saw crush interacting with other guests and were not part of the action.

3. The hot tub on the Concierge deck was amazing. There are hot tubs available to non-concierge guests but they are obviously more busy. You can pay to use Senses spa during your stay which has nice hot tubs as well. The concierge deck was very nice and had lots of lounge chairs, but we spent a lot of our time on the rest of the ship in the pool, Aquaduck, and kids club which are open to all guests.

4. We got to meet sailor Goofy in the concierge deck but then we had already met so many other characters in the park and on the ship that it did not seem super special really. We were also given tickets to Anna and Elsa but we did not get to pick the time. Tickets were given to us by concierge so we did not need to wait in line at guest services. However, anyone on the ship could see them if they are willing to wait in line.

5. The snacks in the concierge lounges were very good, and the coffee machine was awesome. I have one coffee a day however so I figure I could have spent less than $50 at Cove Cafe for decent coffee. I like Joffrey's coffee and I always get it in the parks. I assume there are lines involved in waiting at Cove Cafe, but they never seemed awful. I thought I saw that you can get free pastries at Cove Cafe (but I had no idea during our cruise, so we never went there. I assumed you had to pay extra).

6. We got a free fruit basket which was really nice on the first day of our cruise, but there is so much food on a cruise that most of it went uneaten. It was the same arrangement you could order prior to the cruise for about $30. We had a refrigerator stocked with stuff but all of the rooms have a refrigerator.

7. We got cookies delivered by concierge without our asking for it. All guests can order cookies from room service free to charge.

8. We waited in a concierge lounge and were in the first group to embark. This was nice, especially for a shorter cruise. On a longer cruise I'm not sure I'd place as much value on this perk.

9. On disembarking, Concierge helped us to get an elevator that he keyed so it didn't stop on our way down as we left the ship. This was nice since we had an early flight but next time I think I will just book a later flight and I can deal with a crowded elevator. Everyone has to be off the ship at the same time anyway.

10. Our room slept up to 5, and there were only 4 of us so we were very comfortable. The room had lots of storage and nice finishes. We had the round tub and nice soap/shampoo but I could buy fancy shampoo myself and pack it in my bag.

For 2018, I'm leaning towards trying to book an intinerary that excludes CC. We could get a deluxe inside room for 1/2 the price, and see if we can pay to upgrade at the port. Concierge service was great, but I'm not really high maintenance and I'm just not sure it's worth the cost. Curious what others think.

Our first DCL cruise was the end of a family trip celebrating my parents' 45th anniversary. 4 adults stayed in a Concierge family stateroom, and we were fine. But we definitely have not felt the need to sail concierge again. Like you, we are not high maintenance at all - our host got sooooooo excited when I went into the lounge to ask for ONE diet Coke as I'd drunk the ones in our fridge, he brought a whole 12-pack to the cabin and replaced the drinks we weren't drinking with diet Coke. Going point by point...

1 ~ We booked too late to even consider a cabana - but I don't know that we would really use one anyway. I'm debating getting one on the adult beach for Feb IF there are any still available when I can check in, but I don't feel that it's 100% necessary to enjoy CC.

2 ~ FWIW, Crush does not just talk to concierge tables. He talked to 2 other tables in our section and we had never seen those people anywhere in the concierge area. It's random and luck of the draw.

3 ~ Didn't really use the concierge sun deck as we're not really bask in the sun people.

4 ~ I agree...if it was a 100% unique character that would be cool, but I've encountered sailor Goofy in other locations.

5 ~ We did like the happy hour, but other than that never really had anything from the lounge as we were so full from other food.

6 ~ Ditto.

7 ~ We didn't get cookies, but agree that there is no charge (save a dollar or so tip) for cookies from room service, so meh.

8 ~ The lounge was cool, but not make-or-break for us.

9 ~ We did the breakfast and disembark thing - and actually LIKE doing that (along with putting our luggage out the night before), so a dedicated elevator is useless to us.

10 ~ There are non-concierge rooms that have the round tubs as well (I think it's the cabins listed as "Deluxe Family Inside/Ocean View/Veranda). And all cabins get the bar soap and the good shampoo and conditioner. The after-sun gel (and any kind of liquid body wash) is the only exclusive to concierge thing.

I have sailed Ocean View and Verandah (I was one person who was NOT happy my Ocean View GTY put me in a verandah because I did NOT like being on Deck 5 - that is the primary reason I would never book GTY again.) on DCL, Ocean View and Inside on RCCL, and Verandah on HAL since my first DCL cruise and have had zero issues with any of those cabin types. FOR ME and my needs, I know that Concierge is not worth it.

My only caution for you is the "and see if we can pay to upgrade at the port" bit. IF you are not really going to be happy in an inside cabin, I would not book it. There is never a guarantee that you can upgrade at the port, so I would never book a lower category than I'd be happy with banking on being able to upgrade. IF you're looking at the possibility of upgrading as icing on the cake - nice but not necessary, then go for it. BUT if you're booking low and planning/counting on being able to sail high for less and will be very bummed if you get to the port and learn that there ARE no upgrades available, I would not take the risk.

I only book inside staterooms and our cruise vacations are the best vacations we go on. I'm just sayin'

Thanks so much for your feedback. It's so helpful to hear positive experiences about the inside cruise rooms. I like the idea of the animation on the fake window. I've heard lots of people will only book that since they like it so much.

We've done concierge at the Polynesian and it was great, but once again, we had just as much fun at Art of Animation. I'm just sayin'

I've never been to AoA but we did concierge at the Poly once too. We loved it. It was back in the day when the rates were being discounted by 30% so we did that instead of the meal plan and we just paid out of pocket for one big meal a day. We also loved Poly concierge but have since joined DVC. I would consider concierge at a Disney resort for a short stay (maybe one night pre-cruise) but I think that too may be overpriced. For people who go back to the room for naps that are not on the meal plan then it's probably a better value since they get more use from it.

I didn't read all of your long post. I do agree with your it's not worth it. I only stay inside mainly. 19 cruises 15 have. Been inside. If you can't afford it or don't want to pay that price don't. If I had money coming out of my butt I would get a suite and cruise more often but like most people I don't.

We'd like to try concierge, but I can use all that extra money for my airfare, tips, etc. and come out even (or ahead!) in a non-concierge stateroom. Other than being in the earliest boarding group, I'm not sure there is anything concierge can offer for us that makes up for the price tag, and since I'll be Platinum CC soon, that concierge perk won't be worth it to us either. If we can ever snag concierge for a short cruise at a less inflated price than it is currently we may try it so we can make our own comparison, but for now the points made by PPs make a LOT of sense to me!

While we love sailing Concierge, the recent opening day (and beyond) pricing has kept us from booking. We've sailed Concierge 5 times out of 7 cruises on all ships but the Wonder. Our first time was the Fantasy during her inaugural season, in a CatV for a 7night Eastern, we paid less for that room than even the Inside rooms are currently priced for the same time and itinerary. Our next was a 1 bed on the Magic, out of Galveston, the year Disney was having so much trouble selling rooms. We paid even less for that room! Then we took 2 off season Dream trips, which were moderately priced, one in a Cat V and one we port upgraded to Cat T. The last time was another port upgrade from a VGT to a Cat V. It seems like the only time we will be sailing Concierge in the future will be off-season, port upgrades if we can get them. Otherwise, I'm even having a hard time convincing hubby to book anything with the price increases.

We would love concierge and did have it booked for one cruise but when we rescheduled for a different cruise concierge for only 2 adults was 12K! That was definitely not worth it even being our honeymoon. I can't imagine getting 12K worth of it knowing we could have taken several cruises for that price. Even kind of shocked at the veranda prices because they are double what we are paying for a longer cruise on DCL so really hoping we don't have to change to that one.

I'd get a BMW if I had the $$--but not worth it for me. But it is for others. Same with Concierge--it's well worth it for many folks.

I believe Concierge now gets Elemis products. Not the H2O that's provided in the other staterooms. Unless you ask your room host to get the "other stuff".

Ah. In that case that is even more reason I will NOT book Congierge. I hate Elemis - that is the crap they use on HAL and RCCL, and I will pay baggage fees to take my own stuff before I use that junk again.

It depends on what you want out of concierge.... we HAVE found that the prices are worth it to us. There are many different reasons that people go on cruises, let alone on Disney cruises, and the ability to go on a cruise in and of itself is a true luxury. Some go for entertainment, some go for lectures and activities, some go for the ports, some go to just escape the demands of the day to day. For us a priority is to be together as a family and we have found that the concierge rooms afford us what helps our cruise vacation have value to us... The increased ability to be together. We love the extra space to hang out in the stateroom. We love being able to dine from the dining room menus in the peace of our own stateroom together. I understand that is not for everyone, and some just use the stateroom as a home base and spend the day enjoying the ship. We really like escaping to the suite and how it allows us to enjoy time together as a family (with little ones who still nap it has been completely wonderful to have the extra space)...That being said, if that is a priority for us, we will choose cruises which are slow (i.e. during school-NOT spring break) and not as much in demand (repo) so that the concierge prices are more palatable.

We cruised concierge once and was totally unimpressed. I felt I had to get my money's worth from the lounge and the room that I didn't go to many of the events around the ship. We had a cabana on CC which was nice but the service on CC was severely lacking. It isn't something I would do again. Cruising more often is definitely more important to me than cruising concierge.

We had Elemis products in our bathroom. My husband bought the shampoo for me and other Disney bath products as a gift for my birthday. I like them but I personally think they smell a little masculine. Also, you can use the Elemis products if you use the Senses spa. So those amenities are available elsewhere if you are not staying concierge.

Also, for the poster that mentioned eating dinner in their room they must have booked a suite which has a table and chairs suitable for eating meals. I was told by the concierge that for a verandah room they can bring you food but they won't serve actual meals. You can get a continental style breakfast, but not full breakfast. So I didn't bother as we preferred to eat as a family in the restaurants or in the lounge.

I forgot to mention the huge perk of free drinks, but that is only certain times (prior to the dinner seatings) and for one reception open to concierge guests only. DH does not drink so this saved me a bit but I also paid to purchase drinks elsewhere.

I would rather take more cruises than book concierge. For us, a cabana also doesn't seem worth it. We have had an excellent time with the free chairs/umbrellas/food on CC without a cabana. We have had tables next to Crush, and gotten great seats at all shows for 4 cruises. We are low maintenance, but I still don't understand how it is worth it. I would just rather spend $ on going to Europe, etc. than C class.

We sail concierge and feel that it is something we are willing to pay for. In my opinion, Cat V is "concierge lite." It is a family verandah stateroom, not a suite like the Cat T, S or Royals. In the Ts and above, the ability to have hot breakfast in suite, as well as MDR dinners served in your suite, is a nice plus. Add to it the added space and the added bathrooms and we choose to spend our vacation money on concierge.

For everyone complaining about the prices, our 2017 cruise out of Galveston is exactly $23 more per person than pricing for the same concierge booking this December. This is comparing the same week, year over year, in a royal. As with all things DCL, ymmv.

The nicest thing about cruising is that there are different categories for different budgets, allowing most people to choose how best to spend his/her own money.

"Value" is such a subjective construct. DH and I both love the convenience of cruising (and I love being on the water period) but we don't enjoy having to make conversation with strangers at dinner, the crush of people in many of the venues, and jockeying for a lounge chair or space in the hot tub. So for introverts like us, concierge is the right blend of quiet, service and relaxation we desire on a vacation.

When we go to Mexico we stay at Now or Dreams resorts (same company, one of these days we'll go kid free and stay at Secrets!) and we always stay Preferred. I liken this to concierge as it's a lot of the same perks. However, it's not twice the price, it usually only a few hundred dollars more. So yeah, when I told my dh about concierge but that it was so much more $$ he said "nope" lol. Again, if I had money coming out of my rear-end then I would stay concierge because we certainly enjoy the perks of staying preferred ;-) Worth it, as someone already pointed out, is very subjective.
