Don't injuries just suck???

I've been getting pains in my right ankle for about ten days now and it got so unbearable that I decided to go and get it checked over. After long waits and x rays and things I was told I had a ligament strain and it could take up to 6 months to heal. Physical treatment : none. I was told to take ibuprofen if/when it was particularly painful.....I realise I need to exercise my ankle gently over time to keep it loose and keep the strength up but I was highly surprised I was offered no kind of support/tubi grip

Yup they do, have had my injury now for 3 years!! Luckily it has got alot better but need to keep an eye on it as I do have flare ups and have been able to control most of those after physio etc. The only problem is there is no cure for what my injury resulted into so it could get worse, thankfully it is the opposite at the moment.
If you are in pain ibuprofen is good and also a hot pad is good like a lavender pillow that you heat in the microwave. Hope you are better soon.

Claire ;)

Yes I totally agree, it sucks big time.
I have whiplash and went to my doctors twice as I have been experiencing pains in my shoulders and a numbing sensation down my arms. All the GP said was that it was indeed whiplash and that it can take 4-6 weeks to heal. I was also told to take painkillers and given a leaflet about whiplash injuries.
I got out of there feeling like they didn't give a stuff, the GP didn't even examine me :sad2:

I hope you start to feel better soon :wizard:

Hope you are not in too much pain, and that you feel better real soon :grouphug:

That's a load of rubbish... was it casualty who gave you that advice or a GP?

I can understand the "no kind of support/tubi grip" thing - most doctors and physios are against them. Basically any type of support will stop the ligaments and muscles around the ligaments and joints getting stronger... so apart from VERY severe cases (very short term use) or some other special cases, supports are actively discouraged...

Do you play sports? Do you belong to a gym? You're at university aren't you? The most important thing is rehabilitation. If you answer those questions, might be able tot come up with some suggestions :)

A very good thing for discomfort and swelling is ICE (great on most things actually!). Worth investing in a GOOD re-usable ice-pack that you can keep in the freezer. When your ankle is playing up, get the icepack out and ice for 10 minutes. Ensure that there is something in between the icepack and your skin (like a t-shirt) to prevent ice-burn to your skin. Don't ice for longer than 10/15 minutes. But you can ice frequently - 10/15 minutes every hour or two.

Don't actually remember any incident which could have caused injury but I went over on my ankle a couple of times in one day, so I'm guessing it would be that.

I initially went to the walk-in centre and then to Casualty....joy of joys.

I am at uni, and I think my Gym membership runs out next week, not sure if i'm going to renew it or not cos I didn't really use it last year. I don't play sports as a matter of course.

I have indeed found the wonders of ice....except I don't have an ice pack so I keep having to make up trays of ice cubes and put them into carrier bags wrapped in tea towels!!

Sending you some disney magic to heal you :wizard:

Hope it gets better quickly.

Ok, well the BEST thing you could do is go and see a physio. If you were sporty, then your uni team/club may have had access to a uni physio for either free or a reduced cost. It might still be worth looking into.... The going rate for a consult is £25-£35: not cheap, but one consult with a good physio should give you some advice on your specific injury and a set of exercises to correct it.

Glad that you have discovered ice... it is INCREDIBLY good for all sorts of things. Have a look at ice packs in boots/superdrug next time you are there - a proper gel pack is not expensive and will mould around your ankle a lot better...

Rudimentary exercises with your ankle include:
- pointing forward and back with your toes
- pointing with the inside then outside of your foot (laterally - if that makes sense)
- rotating clockwise, then anti-clockwise
- tracing the letters of the alphabet with your toes (sounds odd, I know).

If you went to the gym... then you could use their "wobble board" (most gyms have a variation on a "wobble board" - have seen a lot in the form of a sort of inflatable disk). Basically there are a number of exercises that you can do standing on them (stand on both feet, stand on both feet with your eyes shut, stand on one foot, stand on the other, stand on one foot with your eyes closed, stand on both feet and bounce a ball off of a wall). The wobble board helps you to build up the strength in the muscles around your ankle (closing your eyes or catching balls makes it harder). You could buy a wobble board at home (http://www.return2fitness.co.uk/Rehabilitation/Wobble_Boards has exampled from £15). If you were at a gym, you would also have access to swiss balls and maybe a BOSU ball - both can be very helpful in rehabilitaton exercises...

Another exercise is a calf-raise. Stand on the bottom step of your stairs, hold the wall with one hand, the railing eith the other. Now shuffle your feet backwards until just your toes and balls of your feet are on the step. Now push down on your toes, raising you heal up. Be very careful doing it at first (make sure you are well balanced and don't put too much stress through your ankle). Try doing two sets of 10 to begin with. You could build up to maybe 3 sets and then look at doing them one foot at a time (i.e. standing on one leg). But take it easy and build it up.

A few ideas, but honestly a trip to a qualified physio is the best thing (see if you can get it cheap through your uni). He can assess your injury and give you some advice specific to you (and demonstrate how to do these things... it is rather difficult to try and explain how to do rehabilitation exercises...). If you wont be having access to a gym, tell him/her and they will give you exercises that you can do around the home (with no/minimal equipment) :)

I have had quite a lot of ankle problems over the past 5 years or so, so feel for you...

Thank you everyone for the kind wishes and thank you Boo for the advice, I'll be sure to check out the uni....we've got a huge physio dept and if I join the AU again this year i can get access to the sports clinic for free, so I might consider it. For £14 a year its a darn sight cheaper than an independent physio.

Am just getting a bit steadier on my foot but I realise it's going to take time for the pain to subside and then I have to give it a fighting chance to get stronger by doing the right things in the right amounts (cue physio).

Anyone had any injuries in the embarassing sector??? Just for a giggle if you're prepared to share them!!!

My goodness, £14??? You would be INSANE NOT to check it out... :thumbsup2

At least go along and see what the deal is...

These things will EVENTUALLY get better by themselves, but you will always be suscpetable to more strains in that area (especially if you take treat it properly...).

?????

ok I'll be the first to share not embaressing injurys more moments at the A& E.
On the first occasion I banged my head at work and the first aider thought I was talking rubbish - nothing new there :rotfl2:, she insisted I go to casualty in case I had concussion, well the doctor checks me over and then asks me to remove my shoes so he could wiggle my toes - I have no idea why - maybe one of you knows ?? it was mid summer and my feet had gotten a little hot, as the doctor examined them I could see him wrinkling his nose, I should have put talc on my feet that morning I was mortified.

The second occasion was at the physios when I had problems with my lower back, I am lying face down being manipulated when the physio pipes up "oh you have poo on your bum", I nearly jumped off the couch in shock, turns out he was talking about the pooh and piglet tattoo I have - phew !!

Sounds nasty ~ Hope it heals quickly :wizard:
