DH is there right now and says the weather is looking pretty bad and he doesn't think they will get the race in today. He went prepared though with a sleeping bag and extra clothes to stay overnight so he doesn't have to drive the distance home today and back again tomorrow.

Anyone have any picks for the winner????

Well, with a 70 percent chance of rain....good chance it will be rained out. Truthfully, rather see the Indy 500 rained out than the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 rained out (they have 60 percent chance). Maybe we'll get lucky and neither will be ;) And I don't have a pick for the Indy 500 but Jeff Gordon will win the Coca-Cola 600!!!!

Well, it's starting to look as if they are going to start the race, but with bad weather predicted the checkered flag may not wave today. I have been there in the past when the race started and then stopped permanently for the day due to the rain - that is a real BUMMER!!!!

It's really raining here right now in another part of Indiana and we are going to have bad storms throughout the day - good day to clean house;)

Hope the storms aren't as bad as they were on Thursday! I'm two hours away and parts of my town didn't have power until yesterday.

Winner: Sam Hornish

Off topic. Grew up on Indycar racing and sad to see the state this sport is in. It's all NASCAR now. Used to see sprint cars at a track nearby, and some of those drivers would be good enough to race at Indy. The newspaper had a full page devoted to the lineup, the car they drove, their sponsor etc... Now it's just a quarter page. Sarah Fisher grew up an hour from here and hardly any coverage.

I remember ABC showing a lot of the race from their "in-car" cameras. Wow what shots! To see the cars darting back and forth like that and at 215 mph to boot. Best year was with Eddie Cheever (full of himself), Sam Hornish (youg gun), Castroneves (great personality), Sarah Fisher, Tomas Schetcher(sp) etc.... A lot of the CART people have rejoined the IRL, and the sport has kind of become "Hoity Toity" I don't know a lot of the drivers anymore. NASCAR's drivers are much more accessible to the fans.

My mom is proud to be from Indiana, she sheds a tear when Jim Nabors sings "Back Home in Indiana". Lots of tradition Purdue Band, even Florence Henderson :D

but the Indy 500 isn't as great as it was 15 years ago. I don't even know if the Indy 500 is bigger than the Brickyard 400.

Oh well, a great day for racing fans. Lots of time today watching it on tv.

DH just called and said that rain is 1/2 hour away. He takes a radio when he goes so he can hear everything that is going on.

Their on the parade lap - here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several tornado warnings in Indiana right now.

It is really raining now at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and DH just called and said that he is staying dry. Unfortunately, it will be approx. another 2 hours to dry the track before they can run the race again:( . This really is unfortunate for all those that are fans, race car drivers, and their teams & sponsers. Granted tomorrow is another day, but it makes for a very exhausting weekend.

Dh and my 2 dd's are there! We know where the firemen like to be, right Slo? They don't fly home until Tuesday. I'm hoping they'll be able to get this race in. They've had a blast so far. Keep our fingers crossed... :hyper:

ABC has just reported that the race will resume at 3:35 CST - lets hope they are able to get to either half or all the race today.

Robby Gordon has left the race and is off to the NASCAR race - good luck to him there:)

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the Foyt household tonight:scared1:. For any of you that is familiar with A.J.'s temper you know what I am talking about::yes:: .

There will be no Foyts in the winner circle this year!!

Maybe the old man will put on his helmet and drive next year!

Tornado Watch just issued here. That means that I'll lose race coverage while the local news interupts with constant pre-storm coverage. So far, storms north and south of Indy.

Tornado watch here until 7pm. I'm really praying this race finishes so DH comes tonight - I always feel safer when he is home:)

Stay safe during the storms.

The skies are darkening at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and if it starts to rain - the game will be official!!!

Who's going to take the checkered flag???? Or should I say - who's going to win taking the red flag????

The race is over and Buddy Rice is the winner.

Congratulations to him, David Letterman, Bobby Rahal, and their entire race team.:cheer2: :cheer2:

Now DH can come home and sit w/ me and our girls during the bad storms tonight.

Good night to you all!!!

Ahhhhh wonderful. See, the powers of Miss Cleo once again prevail.

The weather radar looks terrible for the Indy/Speedway area. Does anybody have a report from family that is trying to get out right now (6:45pm Indy time)?

I was amazed that they didn't call the race 10 miles earlier with the nasty weather coming in. Really bad for the fans trying to leave the track.

I haven't heard anything yet from DH. If he calls I will have to post and tell you what he said.

I am right now concerned about the weather he is going to have to drive through in order to come home - very scary weather:eek: .

Most importantly, I pray that all of you in the area or that have family and friends there are ok and the storms subside. Orvilleair, I hope that you don't the sport is "hoity toity" because of the former CART drivers because they are extremely nice and down to earth. I've only attended IRL races as a reporter so I don't know how fan friendly it is since I am working and in the pits but I do know at every CART event they have an autograph session free for all fans to attend and the drivers pose for photos and are 99% of the time very cordial with the fans. I know some of the drivers in today's race and all are nice. I've interviewed Helio Castroneves and in fact the first time was a couple of weeks before the Indy 500 which was neat. I also have interviewed Dario Franchitti (dh liked that so he could meet Darios' wife - Ashley Judd), and Adrian Fernandez who is a very sweet and gracious guy. I also know Tony Kanaan who is also a sweetheart. I've met Bryan Herta and Michael Andretti who sometimes walks around with a sourpuss face but is in fact nice - just not as friendly as his dad Mario. Scott Dixon is quiet but as a lot of them, if you don't catch them at a good time and they're worried about their setup or getting in that racing frame of mind they get distracted. You're right, open wheel racing isn't the same anymore but we have Tony George to thank for that.
:( Just about everything that his family did for the sport has been negated by his poor decisions and greed.
