Ok so I hopped onto the fundraiser thread thinking it was something else...Anyways....

I'm walking for Cystic Fibrosis at the end of May. I don't have the resources to do a fundraising event or anything, but I do need ideas on approaching individuals to ask for donations.
I'm in college, so many of my peers don't have much to offer and aren't always willing to give what they do. I've only been at my current job for a couple of months, so I don't know how comfortable I am asking them for money...

I am walking for my boyfriends 1-year-old cousin who was born with cystic fibrosis. I donated last year, but I chose to walk this year and help raise money. I have gotten donations from some family members, but I'm not sure how to approach others, and who it is acceptable to ask? Would I be wrong to approach teachers? Fellow students?
The babies mother gave us wallet-sized pictures of the baby to show who exactly we are walking for, so that could help me out.

Any ideas are welcome! Thank you!!!

Could you leave a sign up sheet (with the picture) by the coffee pot at work (or some central place that people check)? That way, people will see your need and may come ask you for more details, but not feel pressured to give if they don't want to.

I'm walking for the March of Dimes on the 25th of this month. In work today, we are asking for donations. I will have a bucket with me so people can donate cash or change. I don't want anyone to feel like they can't give just because they don't have bills on them. Pocket change adds up fast. I will let you know how that goes.

We have a son with Cystic Fibrosis and we have done several fundraisers for the Foundation over the years. (He turned 16 on Monday)

We felt funny asking co-workers but with all the candy, candle and other fundraisers that school children have and parents bring that to work, we posted a flyer in the office kitchen and if anyone was interested they came to us and made a donation. (mostly flat donations not per mile or steps)

You could always ask if anyone would like to join you for the walk for exercise and for a great cause. You could make a team effort and then ask the company for a corporate donation to sponsor the company team.

I think the idea of a "fund" bucket with a picture in a central area at your work is a great idea. Spare change adds up fast, and this way people can donate without feeling pressured if you go desk to desk.

It's great what you're doing, i've walked and run 5K's in a lot of these situations and any funds you can help donate will be greatly appreciated by the charity.

I have to agree with putting your sign up sheet or whatever in a central location.

I have this one guy at work that just walks around, desk to desk, with this raffle tickets/order forms/box of candy...and basically won't leave your desk until you buy something.

so completely rude...so a central area is MUCH better...

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll talk to my boss today and see what is acceptable to leave out--thanks again everyone! Any other suggestions are still welcome!

Oh, and I figured out the broke college student thing...I sent them an email with a picture of the baby with a short letter asking that they forget the starbucks and tanning for a day, and send the $3 to a worthy cause-be it cystic firbosis or another. Well, as of today, I have 3 checks coming to me in the mail :)
