When I have time here and there (such as when waiting for my kids at their programs), i'll read the Unofficial Guide to Disneyland. Yesterday I was reading about the Indiana Jones ride. I remember parts of the movie and the attraction sounds really cool with lots to see and action!

Are there any drops in it like a roller coaster? I had eye surgery a couple years ago and need to avoid rides that have sudden acceleration...which is more like full adult roller coasters (e.g. I may try Big Thunder - haven't decided yet)

The ride doesn't have drops per se, but is exteremely rough. It jerks and takes off suddenly, zigs when you expect it to zag, and is generally extremely bumpy. It's like riding in a jeep over rocky terrain, but magnified. It doesn't accelerate any faster than a car would on a fast turn in a city intersection, as I remember.
ETA: This is not to be missed, if you can manage it. It's my favorite ride at Disney across the board!

Thanks. So sounds like it's as good as it sounds. Thanks for the warning about the jerkyness. It's hard to know what is ok and what is not (even my doctor couldn't say).

As PP said it is a very rough and bumpy ride. In terms of forward acceleration I don't think it goes very fast, but it will turn suddenly and generally jostle you around. There is one small drop, but nothing like you would see on a major rollercoaster.

My grandpa had eye surgery quite some time ago so I am not sure if his situation is different but he rides that ride all the time. He always jokes though that if he rides roller coasters, his eyeballs will pop out of his head. I dunno maybe they will but he does fine. lol he also rides BTMRR but like I said, his surgery was a while ago now.

As previous posters have said, there is quite a bit of jostling and jerking around. It is pretty rough, especially if you are in the back row, imo.

It definitely is rough and it does like to throw you this way and that way and bounce you around a bit.. nothing painful( at least not for me) but I don't know if the ride would be ok for your specific situation. It definitely is NOT like your typical sudden drop rollercoaster but it is a doozy! I honestly can't say yes or no to your riding of this ride....I would hate for it to be too much but then I'd hate for you to miss out on it if it is just fine!

Yes, I would classify it as having sudden acceleration. It's not one speed steady like a roller coaster. It literally stops at places and then "zooms" on out (not as fast as a roller coaster). Are you going with a group? I ask because maybe there is someone who could guinea pig the ride for you via FP or Single Rider and give you a more detailed take on it? (I briefly skimmed your WDW trip report but I didn't see mention of AK? Indy is the same ride system as Dinosaur if you're familiar with that ride.)

Thank you for sharing and great to hear that he's fine on Indiana Jones and things like Big Thunder (and cool grandpa :-) ). I had a retinal detachment if that helps to compare.

So are we better to try and sit upfront?

Yeah...that's the thing. I need to watch it but at the same time, I want to ride with my kids and not sit back and watch IYKWIM.

Going with DH and my kids. So yeah, DH could give it a shot. If it's jerky, he may not like it and then discourage me. We've been to WDW once but skipped Animal Kingdom so haven't been on Dinosaur. Had no idea though that they were the same. Obviously different theming. Thought I heard that Dinosaur is quite scary?

Same ride system, but Indy is very different theming. I think they are both a bit scary if you're young and easily frightened. Adults won't likely find the rides scary, but definitely jarring.

My husband compares it to riding a bull, if that sheds any light. It is probably our family's favorite ride, though I do usually need to pop a couple of ibuprofen afterwards for my back.

It's very jerky and lots of sudden accelerations and sudden stops. Riding in front is definitely an easier ride than the back.

Ditto what everybody else said.

BUT, maybe it's the theming, but I love Indy. I'll ride it multiple times but Dino I usually skip -- makes me nauseated.

Yes, definitely the type of ride you gotta hang on to the handles.... my favourite !!!!

There is no difference in the jerkiness between the front and back. If someone has had a gas bubble for a detachment there is no seat on the ride that is safer than any other.

I had a retinal detachment if that helps to compare.

I'm surprised your doctor doesn't have an opinion on whether this type of ride motion would be okay or not for your situation.
Retinal Detachment sounds pretty nasty.
If you did ride and experienced an issue, how would it impact your vision?

If you want to stay with your family, you could go through the whole que with them. And as they load, you could exit. At least this way you'd get to see some of IJ's features. There is lots to see as you travel through the line maze.

I think I'd skip it, stroll off for near by FP's and grab a dole whip. While enjoying the dole whip take a seat on the rock wall at IJ's exit.

Good luck

I have had retinal detachment too! Trying to work out what I can and can't ride... I'm going in June, happy to tell you what I rode and whether I ended up with another detachment or tear!

Sorry you have gone through this too. It sucks. :-( Hope your treatment has gone well? I have a buckle in one eye (and laser in other).
It's really tough with Disney knowing what is ok and what is not. Do you know offhand which you are going to try and which you are going to avoid? For sure, I'll avoid California Screamin, Twilight of Terror (or whatever the new name is if they are changing it) and Hyperspace Mountain. The one's I'm on the fence with are: Indiana Jones (as in this post), Blue Thunder (I do know this one from WDW...it's ups and downs and turns but not a crazy rollercoaster), Radiator Springs, Matterhorn, Mater Junkyard and Grizzly River Run. It sucks having to sit out on some (or a lot) of rides. Would love to hear back from you on what you ended up trying since we're in the same situation. Have a great vacation. Disney is such an exciting holiday!

That's the thing...there is no black and white answer. And even 3 different doctors give different opinions. My eye surgeon said 'no restrictions'. My eye specialist said 'you can try it and see as it's hard to say' (no pun intended), and my regular eye doctor said 'need to be careful'.

Good to know I can stand in line with my family right until they get on. I am noting this as I'm sure it's not the case with all rides.
