But I learned something: forums are a NIGHTMARE for mods. Where does the line get drawn? How do you react? Frankly I'm dead happy not having that weight on my shoulders any more.
I would imagine so. Someone started a thread earlier in the week asking how to become a mod and my first thought was 'WHY would anyone ever WANT to be a mod?'
I could imagine possibly agreeing to do it out of a sense of obligation to a board you really liked, but WANTing to? Uh, no!

In the long run the people who own the boards pay for the servers, and bandwidth, they also hire the mods.

If the owners instruct the mods to moderate in a specific way, well that's the owner's prerogative.

Ya think?

What was the PR team? Must have missed that?

And there was nothing wrong with the Duggar thread. can we not discuss current events?
Hey, phorsenuf, I got caught up in the Duggar thread. Let me explain why it got closed. This is just my opinion too. If you were on mainStreet USA at WDW and you were with your small children and you were talking or discussing the Duggers and your children or grandchildren could hear everything, and I mean everything that was being discussed in detail, would you still allow them to be standing their listening? The board is a Disney Board, and the owners decided what kind of discussions are off limits and this was definitely off limits. I should have known better, but like you said, it was a current event, and shocking to all of us, just not an appropriate topic for a Disney board.

The board I moderate is the Trip reports board. I have seen some bullying on my board, not much and with the bullying comes abbreviated swear words. If someone is abbreviating swear words, to me, that is just like being on Main Street USA and swearing in front of my kids. I will give you a warning and most likely points.

I got the impression that the PR team was either set up to push Disney or to push the DIS or maybe both. I don't think that the DIS had anything to do with it.
I figured it wasn't real, but just a made up term to be mean. I'm definitely the last person who would be on a PR team for a big business or a Web forum though.

Is that the thought process? We should think that young children are reading these threads? Truthfully that has never entered my mind.

Thank you for your explanation. It is very helpful. I believe it is important to be supportive of victims/survivors. I don't see how this family can be discussed and ignore the elephant in the room at this point. So, I guess the next best thing is to just not discuss them.

I was asked to administrate on a large-ish board a number of years back. It became a nasty, thankless free job. Fortunately I had a pregnancy/new baby excuse to step down from that position. For some reason tons of people want to be moderators though, probably for a false sense of power high. They want to able to boss around people on the board they don't like.

It sounds to me that you are trying to keep kids safe with rules like no swearing. I get that. That is smart.

Tell me, does that safety extend to monitoring your trip report forum to protect ALL kids - including ones who might be being targeted by classic predatory behavior?

It could be brought to my attention. I can't read TR's every second of the day. Most of us moderator's have full time jobs. I need readers to help me. Many know me on the TR boards, and will notify me when something like this happens.

Thank you for the explanation for that, but if I may say, in the spirit of friendly discussion, this is what reads under the Community Board;

Join our moderators in a discussion forum for any topic, Disney or otherwise. Swap stories, information, ask questions...just be friendly :)

So if I am reading that correctly, the CB isn't so much a Disney related board as any discussion is welcome. Also, ifI was on Main Street and heard a conversation taking place I did not want my children to hear, I would steer them away. Since this board is pretty much adults, I'm not sure why we couldn't abide by that. Don't like the discussion, walk (or click) away. I honestly do not think that yound children are prone to hang out here, and any that do would be older kids (teens) that I am sure could handle such a topic and could learn from it.

Again, not being argumentative, just giving my opinion. :flower1:

I had parents tell me, they will sometimes read threads together on the DISBoards, especially some really good TR's. I have had some kids as young as six give me a Trip Report. they may not frequent The Community Board, but they are here. Remember this is a Disney Board.

With all due respect, I would like to know why you allowed such a blatant reference to ************ on a thread? Would you be ok with someone making such references in front of your kids on Main Street USA? (If you don't know what I'm referring to, look at my posts in this thread.)

As a parent, I would never let my six year old on a message board. I'm just now allowing my 11 year old onto the computer without me being in the room with him, and we have his chat functions on his Xbox blocked unless we know he's talking to one of his RL friends. So, honestly, if the parents are allowing young children to access an anonymous message board, without going over the thread first, well, then if the kid sees a civilized discussion about a grown man molesting his sisters, that's on the parents.

May this is something that needs to be redefined since it says any subject. There is a sticky in the Community Thread, concerning religion, politics. We were asked way back when, to watch for certain subjects. And it was explained to us that all subject matters have to be appropriate for all age groups. It is suppose to be a Family Friendly Board.
