Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I run 3x a week and I try to do a full body interval training (cardio and weights) or an upper body workout at least 1-2 days more. I make sure I take 2 full rest days. That really helps my body.

That is my ideal. However lately I've only been getting my runs in and not the extra 2 days of interval training. I've been studying for the CPA exam and sometimes I can't get those extra workouts in.

Got the 10 miler in today I meant to get in yesterday. Only 6 weeks to go, though I have one 3 weeks today I need to run for a fast time since it is part of a running series I am doing.

I wanted to remind everyone who might have jumped on this thread a little late we are going to meet for a picture in the AKL lobby around 4:00 on Friday evening and then those that wish to join will be heading down to Boma for dinner I'm not sure which I am looking forward to more, Boma or the run.

:goodvibes Well I received my ME info today, that means vaca is right around the corner guys!! I am already having my typical WDW nightmares (last night the nightmare was we were in WDW but we did nothing but watch tv in the hotel and missed all the parks :rotfl: )

I am starting to get nervous about the run, figuring out my transportation, etc., getting my spectator to EPCOT, and more

Wish that I could make it to Boma...I am seriously bummed, but already made plans for Ohana that night and all...hoping that people still want to meet up at the race start for pictures and company too :thumbsup2

This week I am trying to find a belt pack that possibly has a pocket to hold a small camera or phone and also has a small water bottle...something along those lines

Question for those that are flying. I've never flown to a race before but I read somewhere that you should pack your running stuff in your carry-on in case of stolen/lost luggage. Do you pack all of your running stuff in your carry-on? Just shoes? Nothing at all (although, I've had my luggage both lost and had items stolen from my luggage before so I think I'd at least do shoes)?

For some reason I'm starting to get paranoid about hurricanes and/or bad weather preventing me from flying to FL. I guess if nothing else I'll be driving myself there!

I ran 10 miles this morning and it was probably one of the worst runs ever. I was so burned out from running, mentally over it, and just trudging through. It was awful and hot. I spent the last 20 minutes thinking about how I will only do 10k's after this half and the full next year. Hopefully the 8k I'm doing next Saturday goes better.

Oh, another question that has nothing to do with this race but just thinking into the future and running when it's cold again....do you run with something covering your face/mouth/nose when it's around 20ish degrees? I hate the feeling of super cold (20ish degrees is super cold to me :) ), sharp air hitting my lungs and I've seen some things on some websites but wasn't sure if anyone had any recommendations.

I started a subscription to Runner's World a month or so ago through Amazon for $15. I got August and September issues in the mail last week and it's killing me not to read them! I ALWAYS buy a Runner's World magazine at the airport when I'm flying somewhere but I figured for the cost of three magazines I can get a year's worth. But now I have to hold on to them for another month before I can read them!

I can't believe it's almost a month away! :goodvibes

I would put your race clothes, socks, and shoes in a carry-on...anything you couldn't live without on race day.

I know what you mean about the 10 miler. I did mine yesterday and it was "rough" to say the least. Went back to my older shoes, and this time the knee was much better. Instead, I just felt overall fatigued - so much of running is mental. It got the idea of training for an upcoming full marathon right out of my head, because the thought of doing a few 15+ milers in preparation was unthinkable. The training plan I chose (Hal Higdon Intermediate) still has me doing a 15K (9.3 miles), an 11 miler, and a 12 miler with no taper. I think I am going to have to tweak the last couple of weeks, because I don't know if that is going to help or hurt me!

Gotta' go get ready and then off to work . . . :car:

I carry everything I will need for race day in a carry on. I have seen the panic in the eyes of a lost bag owner at the expo too many times. I guess the exception is that I tend to pack gels, runner's lube and throw down clothing in checked bags. I just want to have the stuff I have run in at least once with me. Although I guess for a half I have run in a new pair of shoes, only wearing them on the trip to the half. Not the prescribed way but I received them in the mail the day we were leaving and I could tell immediately there were no hot spots. (I did have my broken in shoes in a bag just in case they did not feel exactly right).

Hurricanes are a fact of life. It's like blizzards, if one occurs you just have to work around it. The likelihood of having one on the weekend of October 1 is a little remote.

I can't really help with the cold weather question. I know that I am OK down to about 10 or so before needing balaclava to keep warm. I have one from Pearl Izumi that I purchased for cold cycling. Works well.

Good luck with your training. A bad training run is really a good thing for the race. It builds the mental tool set you need for those tough stretches in the race. And it is rare to have more than one bad long run coming into a half. I worry when I do not have a sucky training run as it makes me worry about the race.

Keep on trucking

I would pack everything in the carry on to be safe (including the watch you will use if you wear one). The other thing to do is when you get to the hotel lay out all of your running gear as though you are about to head to the race. This way, if you forgot something you can still get it at the expo. There is nothing worse than finding out race morning you forgot something like running socks and it is too late to do anything about it.

See this thread.

Another one here who did a 10 mile run yesterday and I too was struggling towards the end (of course thinking how will I ever do three more miles for the race!) But afterwards I felt terrific!

I never even thought to put my running gear in a carry on...thanks for the tip!

I'm a little behind in my training, but like several of you, I also had a horrible run for my 8 miles. I didn't go early enough, so it was mid 90's and humid, around mile 4 I though about calling DH to come get me, but I stuck it out and the last 2 miles I actually felt better than the first 6.

I had a mixed bag weekend, myself. 5k race on Saturday went stunningly well. 27:47, which was a PR of 1:29 for me, and a huge PR pace wise. The course was very hilly, including one very steep incline for about .25 miles, which I charged right up.

Unfortunately, I did a little too much work on Saturday, because I was unable to do a LR yesterday, which really killed my mileage for the week. Ended up with 15.7 rather than 26. Grrr. And now it’s pouring buckets today, so I’m not sure exactly what my new plan is for this week. VERY frustrating, with less than four weeks till the Philly RnR.

I'm only going for 5 nights, so I'll just be bringing carry-on. But if it were a longer trip I would definitely pack all my race stuff in the carry-on.

For some reason I'm starting to get paranoid about hurricanes and/or bad weather preventing me from flying to FL. I guess if nothing else I'll be driving myself there!

Lucky! Not even an option for me. :p

Still better than me. I'm just now up to 7 miles starting tonight! And the fall semester starts tonight as well. Fun stuff.

I don't think it's ever been 20ish in San Fran. Guess I shouldn't have even quoted that part. lol.

I can't believe it's almost a month away! :goodvibes

Can't wait! :cool1:

I can only tell you about my own experience, and I am a relatively new runner. I also hate running in cold weather, and therefore run on the indoor track at our gym during the winter. And then came the 2010 WDW Half Marathon!!

I had no choice but to run in the cold! I did bring an old scarf that I would have had no problem discarding along the way. I used it most while waiting for the start. Brrrr!:cold: After I got going, I just moved it down around my neck and never really noticed that I was breathing cold air. I think I was just thankful to be breathing at all! I never did discard the scarf, but I did throw away sweatpants that I wore over my tights. This experience did teach me one thing: I can get out and run in ANY weather condition!

So glad the question was asked, I will make sure to pack all of my running gear in my carry on!! I probably wouldnt have even thought that through when getting ready, since I am doing a week long trip then the race weekend

Just did 3 miles today...my big toe on my right foot is KILLING me, this is the area I injured in a previous race..so I am going to take it easy this week with short runs

Probably 2 stupid questions, but here goes anyway: is everyone wearing nametags and their WISH gear to the meet? And do you need ADRs for Boma?

I don't think anyone will be wearing name tags but I'm sure there will be a lot of people in WISH gear or DIS gear even if everyone isn't. I suspect it will not be all that hard to figure out which group is the WISH group. Maybe if anyone has any "Hello my name is..." stickers we can all wear one. I only have one wish shirt which I will be saving for the next day. Well, I do have another but because the shirts ran small there is no way to get into it and still breath so I can't really wear it.

As for an ADR, we already have one so just go to this thread and let Mrs D know how many will be in your party.

I was planning on bring some DISigned name tag blanks to the Boma meet. I can make extras and bring them to the AKL photo meet as well as ADP's meet at Tambu if it's helpful.

I made a little Iron on for my lime green running shirt that has W.I.S. H. on it and the Dis. group Triple D's on it. I put it on the back. I was hoping those who ran by would say, "Hey, I'm on Dis boards.. Who are you?"

I am still working out the details of the BOMA get together, I would LOVE to go but I am with my two kids and may meet up with other people from Florida that night. I really want to meet many of you.

I still have my nametag from the WISH meet in January. Just have to remember to bring it.

Just received my ME packet in the mail today, so that really means it is getting close!

I'm curious to hear how you make out with the trainer. Hope you give us a note after. I was thinking about hiring a "movement" expert/ trainer. He would video my stride, evaluate, and give pointers based on that.

My first session is this upcoming Sunday....will let you know if I get any helpful tips!

As a novice, one of my concerns is pre race prep. With the 1/2 beginning at 10 pm....what are the seasoned marathoners doing? Taking naps that evening...attending any special events at F &W...?? Loading up on carbs...(we are doing a late morning Cape May Cafe breakfast)....

Very interested to here what others do to prepare for the 1/2..:confused3
Thanks for any help:goodvibes
