Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I want to start off this post with a disclaimer:

None of this is a sure thing!

We have some friends who were going to do the half marathon relay with us. They have recently run into some financial difficulties, and may not be able to join us after all. They called Disney to see if they could get a refund on their registration or transfer it to another race, but were told no. Disney did tell them that they could however transfer their bibs to other racers but those racers would have to run under their (our friends) names, not their own. They are still trying to decide what to do. Much will depend on what kind of price they can find for airfare. That being said, I told them I would put up a post here to see if there would be anyone who might have wanted to run the race as a relay but was unable to register in time. I can't guarantee that this will happen because they may still decide to go, but I just wanted to see if there would be any interest.

Hi,

I sent you a PM. My husband and I would be very interested in purchasing their registration if they are unable to go. We did not sign up in time but already have a room package reserved so are ready to go if they are unable.

Thanks.

I have to admit, I plan on having mine with me as well...
I only plan on using it in those long empty stretches. Disney races have their music going with a lot of activity but those difficult and lonely times I need the boost.. I also know the people I am running with are going to be way ahead of me so no chance of their support..:lmao:

I am a slow and steady turtle!!:goodvibes

I think I need to make a shirt for the race that says "slow and steady finishes the race" with a turtle on it :rotfl:

We are going for a quick 2 mile run right now, because it has been storming bad in VA where we are lately, so we havent had much of a chance to get a run in :guilty:

I'm on vacation right now so how in the world is it that I haven't been able to get a run in?!! Does hiking count?! UGH.

Anyone staying @ AKV & meeting up? I'm still fretting about transportation. Bus hop to the race, cab from % guess. Anyone wanna share a cab?

Omg I'm gonna b so slow for this one it's ridiculous.

I did learn the other day when talking with a Disney Endurance CM they are planning the "bug" merchandise reveal at the Expo
I wanted a training shirt for Wine & dine....so wondering what they will have!

Did everyone order the pins?

Back to the important stuff..how is everyone doing training wise?

I took yesterday off after my 7 miles on Monday....am just going to do cicruit training today...and just a couple miles on the treadmill.

What is "bug" merchandise?

I did order a pin, figured I would with it be in inaugural event and all.

My training is going well - hope everyone else is doing ok. Today was a bad run day, my legs were just tired and at one point I swear I could have walked faster  I only walked .1 out of the training so not to bad I guess.... I went 5.1 miles today and have a 10K coming up on the 28th which I hope to use for placement time.

I'm just guessing here, but I think my good friend DisneyBride'03 meant "big" mechandise (as in "the really good stuff!!")

I can't say I am all that surprised. Disney won't let such an obvious marketing opportunity pass them by and, let be honest, us runners like to buy up swag.

I'm also slow and steady! I was that way with biking, and I'm that way with walking/running. I can go and go and go, just not fast! :goodvibes
I figure by the time I'm out of one of the last corrals and I'm walking, the party will be over and I'm just heading back to my hotel!

Could be shoes, technique or just tired and not following good kenematics. The headed downstairs issue can indicate patellar femoral syndrome or runners knee. Obviously a doct or is going to have first hand knowledge of what he feels and sees. I would give it some time and see if you bounce back.

If not see what the doc says and if runners knee see if he can direct you to a sports oriented PT clinic. They can and will be able to help with any musclar imbalance that you may have established .

Finally, if the pain persists I would see a doc before heading to Walgreen's or other store and purchase an over the counter band, sleeve or brace. These should only be used like one would a crutch. Only if pre-scribed or if you are so near the end of training and coming into an event that they help get you to the line.

Hope this helps
It was torrential raining when I woke up yesterday, so I waited to run until the evening. I did 4.5 and didn't have pain until about 4.0. I looked up runner's knee after reading your post and the causes, and I think that is what it was. I also believe the cause may be my newer shoes which I will no longer wear on long runs. I bought a more minimal type of shoe thinking I would enjoy some lightweight sneakers. Well, I guess this was the wrong idea for someone with relatively flat feet who used to be "Pooh" sized. I figured if people were running in 5 Fingers and barefoot, I could do with a little less...they were fine for shorter runs. The reason I have jumped to this conclusion is that when I did my 8 miler a couple of weeks ago in other shoes, I had minimal difficulties and no real knee pain to speak of. So, I invested in another pair of stability shoes, and they should be on my doorstep today or tomorrow. Gotta' love Zappos! I may also get my stride evaluated at my local running store to make sure I am purchasing the correct pair for me, although I haven't had any problems until this pair of Nikes! Thanks for your input!

Slow & steady for me too. Besides, my stomach is always a mess after a long run. I'm amazed by folks who can eat_ drink & party after a 1/2!

The key is "they were fine for shorter runs". When you go to more minimal shoes, and barefoot, you have to take time and build mileage slowly. Keep running in your usual trainers and gradually work in your more minimal shoes. I have been running barefoot and in more minimal shoes for over a year (Nikes by the way), but I still put on a trainer from time to time to give myself a break. There are also lightweight stability shoes you could move to, to make the transition more gradual. Nike has one that is good, Mizuno has a couple as well.

Hope your knee gets better.

Long story short, I had the exact same problem w/ my knee. Went to a sports doc & ended up training in Vibrams at least once a week! Without a doubt, the best thing that has happened to my running since Chi. You really have to focus & change your stride to a mid- forefoot strike, but the end result is that your foot & muscles surrounding the knees are much stronger. I've added strength training once a week too. The Vibrams may look a bit silly, but now I have them in 2 colors & wear them @ every opportunity!

My knee actually buckled during the Princess, but knock on asphalt, I haven't had any problems with it for a while now. Just did 6 miles in the mountains, up& down hills & the knee was just fine!!

Good luck!!

What they said....

But I would also suggest strength training. Squats, lunges, straigtleg deadlift, Steps ups, calf lifts - oh my. These are the basic items and you will not I am not a machine fan. Most of these are troublesome with body weight to start. Add dumbells or bands to add resistance once they are easy. Remember to keep an eye on proper form.

Is anyone doing the Family Fun Run that morning?

I partially contemplate it but I don't want to pay the fee for the MNSSHP that I can't attend, our flights leave on the 3rd early. And I am sure they won't allow the party ticket to be used on an earlier day.

I considered it, but I don't want tired legs.

Yeah, I kind of wish it was the day before or something, then I would. But I'm thinking sleeping in and just relaxing that day is a better option.

I am actually contemplating running it to run with a few folks I have come to know. My largest drawback is the extra 60-65 fee for a party I will not attends

If one keeps within themselves on the 5k then they should be ok for the half that evening. No worse than long distance tri training (actually a little more time buffer than some evening - following morning workouts offer). If one does make sure to hydrate well during the day and eat a nice post race recovery breakfast.

I am still considering the 5K too. My wife and one of my sons are doing it. I may do it to encourage/support my son (9 yrs old). So if I do it, my 5K pace will be well below my half marathon pace. I will probably be there to see them start and finish anyway, so I may just join them. Just wasn't sure I wanted to spend the extra money.

You are correct, you have to use the tickets on the 3rd but you can give them to someone else.

I thought about it for about 30 seconds but since I would be paying $100 for a 5K (I also leave early on 10/3) I didn't do it. Even $50 for a 5K is a bit ridiculous but it is Disney and they often do ridiculous when it comes to what they charge.

I do plan on being there to cheer on people I know but there is a chance the snooze button will win the battle with my willpower that morning. We'll have to wait and see.
