Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Skunks! And I thought it was bad enough having to watch for deer!

I'm hitting the gym tonight for what I hope is 4 miles on the dreadmill. I hate it, but we're in the 3 digits and I am too scared of my neighborhood to run after dark. It might be the only run I get in til next Tuesday, so I have to make it count.

I'm seriously not loving this heatwave. I have to get miles in tonight, and it's gonna be about 88 degrees when I start. I'm going to make my boyfriend bike along side me, since it'll be dark.

Amy - If I have to run after dark, I choose a path that has doormen building along the route. That way the doormen are always on the lookout. :thumbsup2

In the winter, this is key after work with the darkness. Good luck tonight to everyone running in this heat.

Thanks... I usually run in Riverside Park or Central Park, because I don't like waiting for lights to cross the street. :rotfl:

I have those too from time to time if I take a route closer to the parks. There have been times I would be running and see a deer in the distance. I would slow a little thinking it would get frightened and run off and I could just keep going. Of course the deer just stands there staring at me as I go by slowly.

When I hear about hunters taking a week to bag a dear I laugh because if I were so inclined I think I could just walk up and stab these.

Kim- Almost all of our local races have gone to D-tag timing which makes the chute go much quicker. Some still use the chips and my run on the 5th actually used the bib tags like they do at many marathons now. I did have a run on the 4th that still did the old "rip the tag off your bib and hand it in" method. Most of the people who finish around me know to just rip the tag off as you are walking through the chute so you aren't standing there at the end trying to do it.

We ran last night after work--it was 95 at 6:15. Yuck. It is so humbling to run in the heat. Our 10k time for Saturday was 10:40 a mile, which I was happy with, as it was my first 10k. Last night our 4 mile run was 12:30 a mile.:scared1: We debated run/walking or plodding through as slow as we could and running the whole thing. It felt great to finish, but goodness it was HOT!!! Even our walk at the beginning and end was slower. We will definitely continue to get up at 5:30 on Saturday morning to get our long run in, as long as this heat continues. Mike carried a frozen bottle of water yesteday and it worked great. It melted just fast enough to drink and when we were really hot I held it to the back of my neck like an ice pack.

Stay cool and stay hydrated!

Frank - I think one of the problems was the guy that was accepting the tags was an elderly gentleman who wanted to chat up every person coming through. He was also the person who blew the horn at the beginning, standing in the middle of the road so all of the runners had to move over to get around him which bottlenecked everyone behind those people so the first minute was spent standing there and everyone trying to push through from behind.

I have never come across any animals on my runs, fortunately. Unless you call the blaring horns and cat-calls from teenage boys "animals" ;).

Is anyone on here a thyroid cancer survivor? If so, what do you do for energy through your runs? I know I struggle sometimes with a lack of energy and will be running the half in October; with the race being late at night, I will REALLY be struggling. :sad2:

Thankfully not thyroid cancer for me, but I am hypothyroid. I plan on resting most of the day and I use Clif Shot gels (mocha) with caffeine in it. It makes a big difference for my energy when I have the caffeine.

I hate non-electronic timed races. There are so few today that folks do not understand the finish chutes. Folks will push through, cut out or otherwise screw up the system.

As far as animals on the run.... I was travelling to Orlando very regularly over last 3-4 years and run early mornings between the BWV and DHS. I usually run into a few rabbits who must be have overcome their fear of humans as they set there looking at me run up and by with out flinching. I stopped one morning to see if maybe they were fake....once I stopped they took off.

Then there is the farrow hog on my local run. It lives in an area that it being slowly cleared so it is losing habitat. I was running along the back road where it lives one morning and I heard it runting and it poked its head out of the under brush. All I really know is that these guys can be fast so I turned my slow run into speed interval for the next half mile to make sure he did not take an interest in me.

Does anyone know what the wine and dine half medal looks like yet?

I asked the Disney Endurance reps at all the races I've done and they kept saying it "wasn't determined yet". If anyone is doing any of the bigger races before October Disney might have the medal there and they can post a picture but I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't know what it looked like until the expo in October.

Well, I saw your 80% full warnings and actually registered today - despite bing registered to race two weeks prior in Philly.

Did everyone pay the $9 something cents processing fee? Was active.com the only way to register? Yikes. Just tell us the total cost up front, darn it. It was expensive to begin with! YIKES!

I believe you could email a request for a mail in registration but it isn't on their site and I was unable to find one via Google.

Speaking of animals at Disney, running at VWL we have seen deer.

How hard is it to maintain a 16 minute mile? Is it possible to walk a 16 minute mile? This is my first time for any type of marathon and I really don't know how to start training and I am beginning to wondering if I am too late to get in the swing of things?

There are plenty of people who walk 16 minute miles. Now, they are FAST walkers, but they are certainly walking.

If you go out and time yourself walking a mile, you'll get a good idea of exactly how fast your pace is right now.

I'm doing the race two weeks before W&D. I'll see you there!
