Inappropriate tribute

I find it even more offensive that you think you have the right to censor the rest of the nation just because of your feelings. I watched the "9-11" film again tonight, and it was even more cathartic than it was 6 months ago. How dare you try to take this away from the people who feel they need to see it.

DocRafiki, the "9-11" film was wonderful. What those people went through is so unbelievable. It helped me to see this film because while it saddened me, it also made me feel good if that makes any sense.

I appreciate the tributes because I believe that those who create them mean well and that means a lot to me.

As much as I've been avoiding TV all day because of the events, I just looked at the tribute here. I read the warning and could have closed the window at any time. However, I didn't and I'm glad I didn't. I was moved...just moved and I'm glad I watched it. It's something that need never be forgotten. I don't ever want to see those towers fall again or people jumping out of windows in effort to save their lives, but as disturbing as all that was...it was a phenominal (sp?) tribute! I never knew that over 30,000 were saved.......I only knew of the 5000 or so that were killed, lost, or missing. Is that a correct number....5000?

Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts. I watched it once, no need to do so again.

i'm with breana. i closed the window less than 30 seconds into the film because i felt that the images were very disturbing and imo, inappropiate for a "tribute."

and jen - i guess someone can't express an opinion anymore?

denise - the number is closer to 3000. ~2800 in nyc, 189 in dc, 44 in pa.

Thank you Spago for the correct number. It's still disturbing to know that many lives were lost, but it's better than 5000.

Wow...that's kinda harsh isn't it? :( She was just expressing her opinion and I'm so sorry it upset you so.

I personally remember getting this in an e-mail not to long after Sep. 11 last year. It was difficult to watch then and was so today. I think at this time we all deal in different ways. I am sorry it hurt some......... I just wish we could all see that things take different meaning to different people and we all should respect that. I will now slide off my soapbox and let you all get back to normal programs :o

sure they can. so can i.

she wants to censor based on upsetting people's feelings, NOT someplace in-your-face like at the store or in the middle of your favorite sit-com. how un-American is that? yeah... let's take it away from everyone because i don't like it.

I thought the tribute was very fitting. While I understand it might be too upsetting to some, the warning was there. I don't see how you can pay a real tribute without telling the true and whole story. I sypathize with anyone who was too upset by that footage, but I don't understand being taken by surprise that it was included in this presentation. I understand anyone not wanting to watch because it hits too close to home. We all have our personal tragedies that we wouldn't care to review in minute detail through the media.

I also think there's nothing to be gained by avoiding the reality of the horror. What about when Challenger exploded or JFK was shot? Those images are still being played because, like 9-11, they're an important part of our history. We learn from our history and from these horrible events. Because of the horror of the attack on the U.S. on 9-11 our country has pulled together, and the government and military have the support they need to fight against terrorists.

Hugs, Breana. I'm so sorry that you're going through this pain.

... and thank you for the heads up in being more sensitive when posting links, making sure that there is some warning about the type of material about to be seen. I think that is a good message.

Watching these images helps me to share in the sorrow, especially since I'm 3,000 miles away ... sometimes I don't realize just how hard they are for those who have been personally touched.

So very sad. :(

I agree with you, I could have done without the stark reality of the presentation. Yet, I found myself watching the whole thing. I appreciated the truibute for it's artistic accomplishment. I was very pleased that my Network of choice didn't show things that vividly.

I understand. I hit the back button as soon as I heard the music.

I'm sure some people took comfort in the tribute. I wasn't one of them, nor were you, but if it helped one person get through the day then it was worth it.

I guess I'm one of the few who WANTS to remember the feelings I had on 9/11/01 .........We have to remember and once again allow our gov't to build a strong formidable military.... we can NEVER let these madmen, these FANATICS, sucker punch us again. That tribute was indeed like going back in time.... I felt it appropriate. That's my opinion- you are welcome to yours.

Did they pull this tribute? I was not able to see it yesterday and I'm one of those people that wants to see all the tributes. I spent alot of time in the WTC when I worked in Manhattan. Went thru there everyday. Is's unfathomable that those buildings aren't there anymore.

If anyone has a link to this tribute could you let me know.

I know that some were upset by the presentation we chose for the home page. I hope no one actually believes that it was our intent to offend anyone. However, we all have different feelings about what happened that day, and we all choose to grieve it in our own way. I have felt for the last few months that we, as a nation, have begun to slip into a sense of complacency over what happened last year. Some of us prefer to pretend it didn't happen, others can't get enough of watching it. It's just how everyone deals with loss. In my case, I'm somewhere in the middle. Like everyone else, I was very affected by what happened last year. I knew when I reviewed that presentation that some would find it offensive, but I felt that the power of the images, and the reminder that they give, were extremely poignant.

I do (sincerely) respect everyone's opinion on this, and I respect the individual who started the thread for sharing thier feelings. It was a tough day all around.

P.S. The tribute was taken off this morning, as it was only intended to be up on 9/11. If anyone wants to see it, it can be found HERE

I did see it as well, and I am a very sensitive person. I saw some pictures I had never hoped to see again. I had to shut it down. I did not return to the Dis yesterday. Instead I surfed on disney.com as lame as their site is I choose to see it instead! But thats my perogative. I didn't however see the warning about the pictures being disturbing.

JMHO,
Lisa

Yesterday, I swore I was not going to watch anything associated with the anniversary. However, I did end up watching this tribute and found it so moving that I had DH watch it when I got home. To me it was remembering what we might be forgetting. All of the outcry about going into Iraq. By doing that (going into Iraq), this is what we may be preventing for ourselves or another country (and probably on a much larger scale).

But yes we all handle things differently and we all deal with issues differently. I did see the warning, and thought about it as it was loading, and ultimately decided, that yes I would watch it, as much as it might hurt. And it was only after watching it that I could cry the big boo hoo tears that I had been holding in most of the day. And I needed that.

We are all entitled to our opinions, we are a free nation, with the right to free speech. Just because Breana expressed an opinion that others don't agree with, doesn't make her wrong. What is wrong is to tell her she shouldn't be feeling what she does. To her it was inappropriate. Those are her feelings. I'm glad she expressed those feelings because to hold them in only makes it worse.

{{{HUGS}}} Breana. I hope that you find healing and peace.

While I could not bring myself to watch it, in general I can understand how some pictures are just too much for some people to see again. Each person deals with things differently and are affected by things differently. {{{HUGS}}} to you Breana

For all the talk about how TV dulls sensitivity, I feel as strongly about seeing those towers fall today as I did a year ago. It is an image that reminds me of our purpose in Afghanistan and the fragility of our own lives. We have to remember that. We cannot censor the tributes to suit the "oversensitive."

On another note, Oppenheimer Funds, which used to be located at 2 WTC, published a tribute in the NYT yesterday that really moved me. I thought I'd add it here.

We reaffirm these truths:
That organizations are best defined by their people
and the bonds among them;
that the greatest challenges bring out the best in all of us;
That the American spirit is indomitable;
that our families are precious;
That each day is a gift.
We thank all who stood by us -
customer and competitor, family, friend and stranger.
We look to tomorrow with conviction and purpose.

(great public relations there)
