So I have a trip planned for next year, and I was super excited....until this news story surfaced. I am aware that stuff can happen anywhere, but instead of being excited, now I am thinking about how I am going to have a "have your guard up" conversation with my daughter which will probably worry her. I know I have had that talk with her before,(she is only 5)but I feel she might need a refresher when going on board. i have even read that people were considering canceling their cruises because of that incident. Now I am extremely weary about utilizing the nursery and kids clubs.

Follow your parenting "gut." The story has not changed/altered our travel plans at all.

It did not kill my buzz at all. I'm still excited to go on the cruise. What happened was extremely unfortunate but I understand it can happen anywhere even schools. I hope they send that man to jail.

Nope, didn't kill my buzz about cruising on DCL and having my kids in the clubs. Also, I'm not buying the story at all. However, crap can happen anywhere.

IMO, this would be a pretty stupid reason to cancel a cruise.

Parents and children should be careful and make smart decisions to prevent this type of thing anyway. A news story of something that happened last year should not change that.

The only reason this should change anyone's views is if they were under the impression that because it is Disney it is somehow more safe. Why anyone would think that is beyond me.

I was so excited yesterday for our cruise. I held a room at Comfort Suites for our Nassau day to use Atlantis. Then I saw this. Yes, I am thinking of canceling our cruise. Probably our WDW trip as well if I do that. It really upset me that DCL did not report the incident at the port. As soon as the family came forward. The video was stomach turning and I would think they had cameras in the elevator as well. I am guessing a Cast Member or someone at DCL gave up that security report. I wish they would make a statement and explain themselves. Like I said in the other thread-I do not even have children and this upset me a lot!

What part aren't you buying, his confession?

This isn't the first time something has happened on DCL, nor is it the first where a CM was involved. If we had a cruise planned I wouldn't cancel it, but I would definitely repeat the talk I have had with both of our kids to reinforce the rules they have onboard. If my kids were younger or if I had just one child who would be on their own, I would probably alter the rules a bit to minimize the time they were alone onboard.

Disney got the guy off the ship - once they figured out who did it - he was lost his job - who knows what happen to him, for all we know he could be in jail where he lives (I doubt it but we don't know)

The grandmother & the girl didn't want to file charges, maybe if they were Americans where going to court wouldn't be so hard - but I understand not wanting to have to keep thinking about it - I hope the girl & the idiot are both getting help because they both need it.

I'm sure if it happened to a Dis member that Dismember would make sure all of us know it.

I'm still dreaming of going on a Disney cruise

No, not at all. I'm just upset with how Disney handled the situation but stuff like this can happen ANYWHERE. That girl was by herself in an enclosed area. When your kids are in the kids club there are numerous CM's watching your kids so i'm not worried about that at all. I'd be more worried about letting your kids roam the ship freely and then someone snatching them into their room as they walked down the hallways unsupervised. As a parent you should always have these kinds of talks with your kids.

Goody goody! Cancel cancel! :woohoo:

Cheaper for me! Wahoo!!!

(Unfortunately, I have heard very close friends with awful terrible things that happened from family members even. There is NO guarantee, not even friends and family and most definitely not with strangers, no matter WHO they work for! It's one of the reasons I'm happy I don't have kids, and one of the many reasons I don't want to. We were never in any clubs ever on the cruises we grew up on. It just would be odd for our family. Our cruises were family cruises, and I can't remember not being with someone we were cruising with. But that's just our family. Anyway you 'rents must do what you feel is right! But if that is the case, libraries, boy scouts, day cares, etc etc are out too because it happens almost all the time at any given time in any of these situations... ie Penn State...)

Incidents like this make you aware that predators are everywhere. But no buzz kill for me, we leave in on the Dream in 4 days.

A child is 10x more likely to be sexually assualted by someone they know than by strangers. School, Sunday school, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, day care, after school care, visiting relatives, neighboorhood....pretty much anywhere your child is not under your direct suprivision they are subject to being sexually assualted.

We never let our kids run amok on cruises...not until they were teens were they allowed to run amok....and even then it was limited or they'd go together.

Or maybe he is working at another cruise line. Or molesting little girls in India. Who knows if he would have got the 25 years to life that the US gives for such incidents if DCL reported the crime here. At least we would know they did the right thing though. If DCL did report the crime as soon as it happened in the US, it would not matter if the grandmother wanted to go forward with pressing charges or not-it would still be investigated.

I'm not so sure people are questioning their future cruise plans based solely on what happened to this poor girl as most people realize this could happen anywhere. I think it also has to do with how it was handled. I don't have anything planned right now, but I'm not sure what I would do if I did.

Have that talk with your daughter anyway. Something like this could happen in the grocery store, school, restaurant or playground - among all the other places it could happen. At five, it's unlikely that she'll be free to wander around unsupervised. However, all kids should know what is appropriate and not and that it needs to be reported as soon as it happens. They also need to be taught to yell, "Fire!" when it is happening. Something we also add when having this conversation is that they need to tell even if the perpetrator threatens them or the family --- everyone will be ok. When someone tells you not to tell, it's really a code saying to tell.

Whether on a cruise or anywhere else - this is good information. Don't cancel your cruise if you want to go - just teach your kids to be street smart.:scratchin

Right. It is great everyone is telling their children to be careful and scream fire and report any incident, but that is what this little girl did and the guy still got away with it free and clear. So DCL and her grandmother failed her. And now he can keep doing it. Well maybe not now-his name/picture are in the news report months later. That is what makes me angry. She (at 11) did the right thing and those in charge messed up. I am not sure I want to spend my money with a company that did that.

Nope - it doens't change my plans or kill my buzz.

I know that there are chances anywhere we go of someone whether it be an employee or another guest could be a bad person.

I can't even say based on the "facts" we have recieved that you can flat out say it was handled properly or not. But no company is infallable.

Yes! I feel exactly the same way and will now be having the good touch/bad touch conversation with my 3.5 yo DD, which I suppose needed to happen anyway since she will be starting Junior Kindergarten in September. It really makes me sad and also realize that I can't protect her from everything and that the world can be a very scary place.
