Inappropriate costumes at MNSSHP

Well let's see.....

Important Mile Markers in the loss of Innocence:

1) the loss of the small neighborhood store, replaced by big boxed everything
Loved the charm of the neighborhood store. Didn't love cramped aisles, limited selections, no parking lot. My grandparents' city home had the neighborhood stores. Suburbs where I was raised, and where my grown DD lives, have big stores, so I feel your comment is not realistic about meeting the needs of a growing town/city.

2) terrorism
The fear of terrorism is directly related to how much Fear TV you watch. Terrorism has existed throughout human history. Pearl Harbor was terrorism. Turn off the TV and start feeling better about your fellow man.

3) Extreme talk radio
Usually on the AM dial. Pretty worthless. What makes it annoying is TV programs focusing on it and giving it importance it doesn't otherwise have.

4) reality tv
Don't watch those TV programs.

5) cnn, and then tons of we'll make the "news" 24/7/365 media outlets
"We'll make the news" now also includes local news. Again, don't watch these TV programs.

6) when the nuclear family stopped being the way most kids were raised
When two parents have to work to pay bills that only one used to pay, everything changes. Blame influence of TV commercials building up a psychological need for "stuff" we don't really need.

7) when safety nets replaced the concept of personal responsibility
There are slackers. There have always been slackers. But I support safety nets. It is not a replacement for anything, it's a lifeline. And we're a huge country with many blessings, whose people can easily afford this.

8) when optimism was replaced by entitlement
Another TV-generated myth.

9) when the golden rule was replaced by the bridezilla mentaliy
Another TV-generated myth.

10) when legislation replaced common sense
Another TV-generated myth. You wouldn't believe that unless someone on TV spoon-fed it to you. Do your own thinking.

11) the days that Mr. Rodgers, Capt Kangaroo died
I watched them both, and Miss Rita, Some Clown Guy, Jim Henson. They were people from my time. In the great scheme of things, there are always inspiring people. The passing of those few you mentioned signals nothing, except that you and I are old enough to remember people that a younger generation never heard of!

.....to mention a few.

To summarize your post, TV is the root of all the negative feelings people have about everything these days. It is the great divider and the great conqueror and the great debt creator. Turn the TV off and get your humanity back and your brain re-engaged.

First of all I prefer the term prostitot for such a topic as this.

As for the bathing suit comparison there's a gaffe in the logic in thefact that a costume covers more than a bathing suit.

The provocative aspect is portrayed in the costuming and nope I don't think it's cool for underage girls to be looking like porn stars. I'm sorry I have three girls and thinking of letting them roam a park dressed in a costume designed specifically to make them look sexy and arouse guys makes me sick and idk wth is wrong with these parents.

Also it's not just teens (they can buy womens sizes and wear them so it's not necessarily geared to them) . I came home from Disney to a costume express catalogue and they had skanky versions in tween sizes. So sick.

I'm only 30 so not exactly an old prude but we as a society are doing a piss poor job at protecting our children and this is a prime example.

I was at the first mnsshp this year and there were some sexy alices and sexy Tinks but they looked college aged so it wasn't thT bad and maybe these ones were flat chested but I didn't see inappropriate cleavage.

What I was surprised to see let in was the entire dead cast of Alice in wonderland. They had zombie versions of all the characters. They seemed ti be eerywhrre we were and showed up while we were visiting Alice and mad hatter. Alice shimmied up to my dh and whispered "if you want to see me in 80 years look behind you" to which hatter shrieked "oh my" .

I was just surprised they were allowed in because I thought I read portrayals like that of the wdw characters were not allowed. poor Alice was all bloody :/

When we went last year I wore a "sexy" Alice costume I just thought it was cute. I didn't find it too bad. It's similar to the Queen one posted. On normal people they dont look as short because the models are super tall. I know there are some pretty scandalous costumes that wouldn't be appropriate and I wouldn't wear in Disney but I found it ok. I also put a pair of skin colored shorts underneath to be safe as well. Not sure if this is the type OP meant though.

That's not even close to what I meant...interesting you came away with that oh, and btw, I watch very little tv actually.
Take "terrorism" as an example; when I was a kid (right after the dinosaurs roamed the earth ;) ) the cars in people's driveways weren't locked, in fact the keys were left in the ignition. The doors to people's home were rarely locked - in case a neighbor needed to come in and use the phone. That all started to change went (as I see it) the behavior of society started to change to include (with frequency) things like stealing....that was/is a form of terrorism....kids of all ages would walk to school alone, would go out and play unsupervised - then the terrorism of possibilities of those actions took over and very little of that happens nowadays.

Ok, peace, my friend. I don't see the need to lock a car except people leave stuff worth taking in them these days, so it's a theft-magnet. About keys in the ignition, my dad was in car insurance. So from my earliest days, I was taught that was a bad idea. Drugs play a big role in the stealing problem, and I regret more cannot be done about that. I also walked to school, over a mile each way (to use a tired phrase). In Western New York, bad weather half the year. It was absolutely the fear-mongering on TV news that made parents demand a bus system for our town. Now school taxes are sky-high to pay for all that. When I think of the places I went alone to play as a kid, I scare myself. The last 40 years, with moms and dads at work, whole neighborhoods are missing those watchful eyes, and it's to everyone's detriment.

But... but... what would I do without my Dr. Who episodes? :scared1:

Plus, I've learned SO much about how to handle my dog from the Dog Whisperer. And Hoarders is a great way to get motivated to clean my house. :lmao:

I think you looked absolutely wonderful! I'm too chicken to dress up in a costume, as I'm going to the party all by myself. But if I was going with other people, I'd love to wear something like that!

Can I just say I think you're both right? TV scares us, and we end up doing things like locking our cars and doors because of the stories we've heard. Even though, across the US crime rates have been falling steadily. It's far safer to be a kid NOW than it ever was when I was a kid in the seventies. And yet we watch our kids like hawks, because we're so much more aware of the dangers out there than our parents ever were. So that has changed the way some people live.

However, there were plenty of us who grew up in the 1970's listening to gunfire and police sirens on the streets at night. And there are plenty of kids today living in neighbourhoods where no one locks their doors during the day.

;)

Free pass for Dr. Who. Dog Whisperer, probably helpful. Hoarders taught me I was fortunate no one in my family has that problem. Not much can be done to really "cure" those people. I'm sad about that. Depressing and voyeuristic show.

well, to be honest...even though the costume isn't unflattering on you, i DO think it's extremely short and inappropriate in a family setting.

And there ARE costumes out there for grown ups that are not 'sexy'...check ebay...use some creativity...some effort.

As for not dresing as characters, DH and I dressed as pirates last year and several people thought we were cast members. So that theory is shot.

Honestly for women nowadays there aren't as many non-sexy choices as there should be. Its kind of frustrating.

It reminds me of a quote from the SATC movie:

Miranda: "There are only two choices for women; witch and sexy kitten"

Carrie: "Oh you just said a mouthful there sister."

I would also like to point out that Disney's Tinkerbell costume does not leave much to the imagination either and she's doing character greetings with kids, so I say if your costume covers as much as or more than the real Tink's, you're good. :thumbsup2

I think that costume is completely acceptable. You look practically wholesome.

Wow... really? Talk about cultural differences, then! 'Cause I didn't see anything "inappropriate for a family setting" about that costume.

Then again... every time it gets even passably warm in my town, girls are stripping down to bikinis and sunning on rooftops. And every time there's a protest against the gov't someone has to get naked.

i hope he likes licorice coz if he was mine, he'd be comin home with two black eyes. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Aw, I told mine he's allowed to look. He's just not allowed to chase them down the street with his phone number in his hand! ;)

No kidding, that's a lot of cleavage! (And no, I don't think the nude tights really help.)

We see teens and pre-teens in those low cut, short costumes with thigh highs and heels every year at MNSSHP. It creeps me out because they are walking around with their parents with everything hanging out. I would have been MORTIFIED to wear something like that around my dad/mom as a teen:) It is like their parents are pimping them out! :scared1:

The nuclear family is a 20th century invention. Did we have any innocence before it existed?

And I was a lot more traumatized by Jim Henson's death, than by Mr. Rogers or Captain Kangaroo. But really... did we really expect them to live forever? I imagine there are children today who will be shocked when the Wiggles pass on before them.

Terrorism is awful, but given our propensity to sugar-coat the past, I think someday we'll look back on the "naughty oughties" with nostalgia. Shoot, we even romanticize the dirty 30's!

But I agree with you completely about the 24 hour news channels, especially the emphasis on "punditry" and the disingenuous claim that anything their pundits say is really just opinion, not news.

You're right - in the grand scheme of things, there's harder knocks to our innocence than some lady's "sexy" costume. I have a hard time getting up in arms over a woman's choice of costume, especially when she'd still be considered *overdressed* for the pool. As long as the pertinent bits are covered I doubt any children will be traumatized.

A lot of husbands (and gay women) will be entertained, though!
:thumbsup2 I like you you're funny and right and smart!:goodvibes

part of the problem is that Disney will not let Adults dress in character costumes. My daughter wanted to dress as a Princess and got shot down. She spent alot of money on that costume also. She was upset.

I seriously hope this is not the case. My entire family has spent some serious cash/time on our Halloween costumes which are all Dis. characters. I see that someone else has said this may not be the case anymore. . . seriously though, I just had to restart my heart:scared1:
