In Training: Marathon Weekend 2013 (Dopey Challenge)! 1/17 - LINK TO TRIP REPORT!

If you asked me the first few days if I would ever do even a marathon again much less goofy I would have told you not on your life but I have done another marathon since and signed up for dopey. It is a great event and alot of fun. Just remember to wear your bling through the parks in the days after the races, everyone is so super supportive.

I was the same way...right after the 2012 marathon I remember thinking "well, 1 and done." Then I was in the airport waiting for my flight home to board while googling Goofy training plans...:rolleyes1 Glad to hear you have had multiple good experiences.

And yes, I will totally be wearing the bling! Probably not all 4 at once though...:rotfl:

Week 2: Rest Day (unscheduled)

:headache::headache::headache:

I still cannot kick this bug. It's moved from congestion to a sort of painful chest cough (which I think is good...maybe?), and somehow I thought painful chest coughs and jumping around at the gym wouldn't mix, so no strength training today. Also, I don't feel that my fellow yogis would appreciate me coughing while they are meditating, so today's going to be a whole lotta nothing for me. :sad2:

I felt pretty good last night (despite the coughing) but I seem to have taken a step backward this morning. If I don't feel better after the weekend I'm going to see a doctor...hopefully it won't come to that.

Sorry to hear you are still battling the congestion. I hope it gets better soon.

Subscribing! I'm training for my first ever 5K with aspirations of running the Princess Half in 2014. I am loving reading inspirational stories of runners for motivation! :cheer2:

Week 2: Run #3 (3 mile loop)
Friday, September 7, 2012
Weather: Not sure?? Low 70s, low humidity and sunny...very pleasant

12 miles completed/16 miles planned for the week
24 miles completed so far in training

Even though I know that Monday's 6-miler was mostly crappy due to my being sick, I have to admit that it really had an effect on both my confidence in and enthusiasm for training for marathon weekend. Today's run sort of helped me get back on track. :) I feel much better today than I did yesterday from a sickness point-of-view, it was nice and cool out...just an enjoyable run. Can't ask for much more than that.

Despite the face that I'm feeling better and haven't done any strength training this week, I'm going to keep tomorrow a rest day rather than try to make up what I missed this week. I think having a great long run on Sunday will really do a lot for me mentally, and taking that rest day to fully recover from this cold/allergy flare-up/whatever will probably go a long way in making the 7-miler light years better than that 6-miler was.

Happy Friday everyone! :goodvibes

Stats from the run:

Total time: 28:52 for 3 miles
Average pace: 9:38/mile (9:55, 9:40, 9:17)
Number of dogs spotted on the run: 4! :teeth:

Week 2: Rest Day
Saturday, September 8, 2012

So when I last left off, I had completed a great run on Friday and was feeling pretty encouraged that I had turned a corner with my sickness. Then I woke up Saturday and immediately knew things had shifted in a bad way. I had pretty bad pain all around my eyes and (weirdly enough) in my teeth. :confused3 I ran quite a few errands (got some new clothes for a work-related trip I'm going on next week, grocery shopped, etc.) and came home feeling absolutely beat. I took a nap with my favorite nap buddy, the little monster man (see picture below) and went out to a quiet dinner with my husband, but I had a feeling that this cold I'd been trying to fight off had now morphed into a sinus infection.

Week 2: Rest Day (unscheduled - 7 mile run scheduled)
Sunday, September 9, 2012

12 miles completed/16 miles planned for the week
24 miles completed so far in training

:sad2:

Yesterday was supposed to be my great redemption run after that awful 6-miler on Labor Day, but I skipped it. I couldn't sleep on Saturday (constant nose-blowing and coughing) and I still had soreness around my eyes and in my jaw/teeth. It hurt to touch my face and open my mouth when I was eating. I finally decided to make an appointment to see a doctor and got some medication specifically for sinus pain and congestion at CVS to tide me over in the meantime.

For about an hour after deciding I wasn't running yesterday I felt really, really guilty about it. :worried: I think something that I (and a lot of runners) struggle with is knowing when it's beneficial to take a day off and when you can just power through. The timing was unfortunate - I really, really hate to miss long runs when I'm training for a race (or for races in thise case) - but I think I made the right call in sitting out the run yesterday. I know missing a run here or there will not dictate how I do on marathon weekend, and it's still very early in training...it's a much better idea for me to recover from being sick once and for all and comes back to it when I'm truly healthy enough to do so. I'm not going to try to make up the run or anything - I'm just going to cut my losses and move on.

I took two day-time dosages of the OTC sinus medication and one night-time dose...I was already feeling a little better right before bed. :thumbsup2

Week 3: Rest Day (unscheduled)
Monday, September 10, 2012

And with that...welcome to Week 3! :yay:

I slept in this morning (no strength training) in an effort to try to kick this thing once and for all. I got, without a doubt, THE BEST night of sleep I've had in over a week and felt a million times better when I woke up! :thumbsup2 The sinus medication I got from CVS yesterday helped me a LOT. I was still having some sinus pain, congestion and coughing, but at least I had an appointment where I was pretty sure I'd get antibiotics.

I work in the research department of a large hospital, so it was very convenient to just walk across the street for my 10:45 appointment. The doctor did confirm that I have a sinus infection and prescribed me a decongestant and a 5-day course of antibiotics. By the time I got my medicine from the pharmacy, yoga class was almost over. :( Thus another complete rest day.

So I've taken my antibiotics for today and my first round of decongestants...I'm feeling encouraged that I'll be able to complete the rest of my training this week as scheduled. Here's hoping! :goodvibes

Happy Monday!!

your dog is so cute :)

Thanks! :goodvibes I doubt I"ll be posting many (if any) photos of myself...like...running or after a run (who wants to see THAT?!), so I need SOME pictures. He'll have to fill that void for the time being! :lmao:

Glad you got into the doctor and I agree with you that it's likely for the best to get yourself healthy rather than pushing through and making it worse. Hopefully those antibiotics kick in quickly and you are feeling better soon!

Thanks! I'm feeling much better today. :)

Week 3: Run #1 (3 miles on the treadmill)
Tuesday, September 11, 2012

3 miles completed/15 miles planned for the week
27 miles completed so far in training

This run wasn't perfect, but I'm glad to be able to get back out there again. I definitely felt a little stiff and sluggish, but other than that and the fact that my throat was INCREDIBLY dry the entire time it was a pretty good run.

I am feeling much, much better today. Sinus pain and congestion are almost completely gone and I'm not coughing very much. I didn't sleep well last night, but I think that can be attributed more to my not being able to turn my thoughts off and relax, if ya know what I mean - it wasn't because I was constantly blowing my nose or coughing like a few days ago. So I'm a bit tired, but I feel like myself for the first time in over a week! :thumbsup2 The goal for today is to chug TONS of water...drinking anything during this sickness has been really unappealing because I wasn't able to breathe in through my nose as I drank, which sort of made me panic (if that makes any sense :confused3), so I'm sure I'm a bit dehydrated. Cheers to being on the mend!

Stats from the run:

Total time: 29:41 for 3 miles (might try a more relaxed pace tomorrow)
Average pace: 9:53ish/mile??

And of course today I've been thinking a lot about where I was 11 years ago this morning (3rd period AP French Class, senior year of high school)...my thoughts are with those that lost any family members that day and those that lost their lives, as well as the police and fire squads that were so heroic. It's still so sobering to think about, and I am taking the time to appreciate everything that I have. :flower3: Never forget...

So glad you are on the mend and sounds like you got the job done today even if it was on the dreaded treadmill.

My friend and I were talking this morning about how crystal clear the sky is today and how much it reminds us of 9/11/01 and those images of that black smoke against that beautiful blue sky. So hard to believe that it was 11 years ago.

You and me both! :)

11 years...crazy, isn't it? I was reading some archived articles/discussions that were going on right as it was happening and it was chilling. :sad2: And you're right, we did have a beautiful clear sky yesterday, just like that day in 2001.
